Sugar Ray Robinson vs Bobo Olsen III 9.12.1955 - World Middleweight Championship

Спорт

Bobo Olsen had won the vacant World Middleweight Championship in 1953 after Sugar Ray Robinson vacated the title following his retirement in 1952. In 1955, Ray Robinson would return to the ring and had high hopes of reclaiming the World Middleweight Title from his old foe. More info below...
Carl "Bobo" Olsen first meet Sugar Ray Robinson back in 1950 when they fought for the Pennsylvania State World Middleweight Title, losing by KO in the 12th. 2 years later Olsen would meet Robinson again for the World Middleweight title but lost a unanimous 15 round decision. In 1953 Olsen beat Paddy Young for the vacant American Middleweight Title. 4 months later and Olsen was matched with former World Middleweight Champion, Randolph Turpin, to fight for the vacant World Middleweight Title left behind by a retiring Sugar Ray Robinson. He beat Turpin in a relatively one-sided affair over 15 rounds to claim the World Middleweight title. He would successfully defend his Middleweight title against World Welterweight Champion Kid Gavilan, the tough Rocky Castellani and Frenchman Pierre Langlois. In June 1955 he also challenged Archie Moore for the World Light Heavyweight title but was KO'd in 3 by the crafty veteran. He had a 71-7 record coming in to this fight.
Sugar Ray Robinson's in ring achievements are legendary. He was a former World Welterweight and World Middleweight champion and had beaten the best boxers of his era. Names like Sammy Angott, Fritzie Zivic, Jake LaMotta, Henry Armstrong, Kid Gavilan, Bobo Olson, Luc van Dam, Hans Stretz, Randolph Turpin and Rocky Graziano are among his victims, most of whom he beat more than once. In1952, while still reigining World Middleweight Champion, Robinson challenged Joey Maxim for the World Light Heavyweight title but had to retire after 13 rounds when he succumbed to heat stroke. Robinson would retire following this fight but returned just under 3 years later due to financial difficulties. Although he was beaten by unanimous decision against Ralph "Tiger" Jones in his second fight post retirement this didn't seem to halt the plans of Sugar Ray too badly as within 12 months he had earned himself a shot at Carl Bobo Olsen and the World Middleweight title. His record was an incredible 136-4-2 at this time.
Olsen was a 3-1 betting favorite by the time of the fight however there were some pundits who still believed Robinson had Olsen's number as he had already beaten him convincingly twice before. As the fight got underway Olsen spent the entire first round slightly cautious but ducking and weaving trying to get in close and land big hooks to the chin. Robinson was never in any real trouble as he stayed back and was easily able to tie Olsen up if he got too close. In round 2 Robinson turned up the attack just a bit, but with only 20 seconds left in the round Robinson landed a flurry of counter hooks & uppercuts that put Olsen flat on his back. Olsen did struggle to his feet like a true champion but he was too late and the ref rightly called an end to the fight and declared Sugar Ray Robinson the new World Middleweight Champion!
Robinson had just shown the critics that although he may not be as nimble footed as he once was, he still possessed that awesome KO power and had many more years left in him yet. Robinson would continue fighting for another 10 years before finally retiring in 1965 at the age of 44 with an almost believable record of 173-19-6 that spanned 25 years.
Bobo Olsen got a rematch with Robinson the following year but the result was the same, being KO'd in 4. Following this forth loss to Robinson, Olsen took a hiatus from boxing only to return in the light heavyweight division 1 year later. Although he never got another shot at a world title during the remainder of his career, he did pick up a second win over former World Light Heavyweight Champion Joey Maxim... Something Sugar Ray Robinson was not able to do! Olsen retired with a 97-16-2 record in 1966.

What a knockout by Sugar Ray over Bobo Olson to regain the Middleweight title. To win it back this decisively was quite a statement by Robinson that he was back.

This wouldn't happen if not for his ex wife Edna Mae. Despite winning all his matches but one in his comeback, Sugar Ray is far from being impressive. Even his trainers George Gainford and Harry Wiley are convinced that he's totally washed out. But Edna still believes in him and actually saw what's the real problem. Sugar Ray was so eager to prove that he still has it. So eager that he was always looking for a knocked out he throw away all his skills and other asssets. Edna pointed it out to him that he's not great because of his power. The old Sugar Ray won fights using his brain, experience and skills. the knock outs was just bonus. Right there and then, Robinson realized what's going wrong and decided to fight again like the old Sugar Ray does.

@@saeedrahi In just 2 years as a professional and at age of 21, Sugar Ray Robinson already defeated Hall of Famers Sammy Anggott, Marty Servo, Fritzie Zivic and Jake LaMotta (along with forgotten legends Izzy Jannazo, Maxie Shapiro, Maxie Berger and Ralph Zanelli), going 7-0 against them. How impressive is that? Remember, that Floyd had 20 year career as a professional and had a current 6-0 record against Hall of Famers and Manny Pacquiao had a current 9-3-1 record. Robinson already had 7 wins against Hall of Famers in just 2 years! Few boxers had already have a 3+ wins against Hall of Famers in just 2 years as a professional. (Jimmy McLarnin and Bivins are the other two I can remember) And the guy beat a staggering 15 Individual Hall of Famers from WBHOF and IBHOF. Including the names I've already mentioned he also beat Henry Armstrong, Georgie Abrams, Bernard Docusen, Kid Gavilan, Bobo Olson, Randy Turpin, Rocky Graziano, Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio, Denny Moyer and Ralph Dupas. He also bear some great fighters who also deserve to be in the Hall like California Jackie Wilson (who beat great boxers like Fritzie Zivic, Kid Azteca, Cocoa Kid, Mike Kaplan, Ceferino Garcia and Tommy Bell).

Sure, he was. An elite level boxer from lightweight to middleweight. He should have been a 3 division world champion if legendary lightweight Sammy Anggott didn't refused to depend his title against a young and novice Sugar Ray. (Imagine that, veteran Sammy Anggott who depended his title to legendary lightweights Beau Jack and Ike Williams, refused to fight the young Robinson for his title). He should have been the first world lightweight champion to become a world middleweight champion and not Roberto Duran. And if business, politics and war didn't get on his way, he could have won the world welterweight title earlier. It was an underrated what ifs in boxing: what could have been Sugar Ray Robinson achieve more if he fought for the title much earlier? If Anggott depended his lightweight title, He could have fought Ike Williams (who admitted he refused to fight Sugar Ray for the vacant world welterweight title), Beau Jack and Bob Montgomery for his defense. Or he could have been the longest world welterweight champion if the title didn't froze. Or he have fought for the world middleweight title much earlier and met Rocky Graziano earlier and/or face Marcel Cerdan. But that's where lies Sugar Ray Robinson's real greatness. It could have been much better but it doesn't need to. He's record is ENOUGH for him to be considered as the (favorite candidate for the) Greatest Boxer of All Time.

@@user-ph2wz7qb9y I think a little bit of everything. everything has been crucial in defeat of Robinson. but I think the heat is the biggest factor. imagine, if you put the fight in a normal temperature, Robinson will surely won the fight. Maxim's contidition and weight won't be a problem.
