We collect maple sap from maple trees on this off grid property and turn it into delicious granulated maple sugar similar to cane sugar or brown sugar, but tasting very sweet and very much like maple flavored candy.
I'll show you how to tap a tree, talk about the right conditions for sap flow, the concentration of sugar in sap, how we collect and boil the sap from start to finish! I'll show you how maple syrup is made using a cheap homemade evaporator!
I'll show you have to make a homemade maple syrup evaporator for cheap or FREE!

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.

Yep the possibilities of the goodies you can make with maple syrup and sugar is endless. If you have pecan or walnut trees on your property just imagine the maple brittle candy you can make. Apparently the difference between making maple seafoam and honeycomb candy one has vinegar a baking soda the other just the soda.
When the kids were in the scouts, we visited our local Ojibwe community while they were boiling down sap. Birch makes a great beverage.
Thanks a mil Kevin for the tree talks and the sugar making process. My dad was a tree lover and he used to love identifying them for fun with me when I was a kid. Trying to do the same with my son now, passing on the torch I guess.
Its great that you showed the different trees in the beginning. Is there a better maple tree then others for making syrup. I know we have alot of what we call sugar maple trees around here in Indiana. Great video as always Kevin! Take care and stay safe my friend!

All maple trees will produce delicious syrup. Sugar maples are ideal because they have more sugar in their sap which in turn means a better yield of syrup and less boiling. I only have red maples on my property which requires a bit more sap to get syrup and has a slightly different taste but still amazing. Sugar maples usually need 40 gallons of sap for 1 gallon of syrup. Red maples are second best with 45 to 50:1.

I have No Oak.. Unfortunately It's one of the species I'm going to be reintroducing.
When you put it in your mouth, LSD hippy music started playing in my head.
You are a kid in a candy shop for sure!!! loved the education on different trees!
This was a great video! I love all the information you shared my man. Especially to someone who isn’t from Canada. Plus it’s always a treat to see Don. Best wishes from England 🏴
I’m so thankful, so very thankful, I can enjoy your projects
Oh sugar, sugar mmmm maple syrup season is here again.
Oh man. That’s so cool. Glad you got to make that this year.
You wanted that second scoop, I could see it in your eyes! Great vid!
Bro, I just love you! Please don't stop making vods. You are so entertaining.
Such a wonderful thing to learn Kevin! Thank you for teaching and showing us the keys differences to look for to obtain that maple goodness! Keep up the great work on the channel and its always a delight to see the family enjoying the spoils of the craft. 😊
Kevin & Don - I have been delightfully hanging out with you two amazing fellas, albeit virtually, for the last couple years. I would gladly diagnose myself with a clinically defined MSR addiction! You two are a fine tuned machine and truly entertaining...AND informative! I love the way Kevin's brain works, constantly birthing new projects, then engaging the "16 Cylinder Don Engine" and away we go! I'm a textbook KZread Viewer, but rarely a Commenter. However, I felt compelled to share the sheer joy I experienced for 44 glorious seconds (20:44 to 21:28)!!! I still can't wipe the smile off my face! I'm going to save this little 44 second gem and keep it in my "Video Medicine Cabinet." This is a small but immensely valuable collection of clips I watch when I find myself in a bad way and need an uplifiting mojo session. Stay safe and keep up the fantastic work! I am so glad to be the beneficiary of your energy and efforts, thank you for sharing your life with all of us!

Hazel ☘️ … Oh boy what a fantastic tutorial Kev ! Maple syrup on pancakes … oh my … but maple sugar definitely is taking this to the next level ! Yummmy yum yum 😋 🙏☘️😘
That looks delicious I know a fella who taps 300 000 trees. Uses pumps and huge vats to boil down the syrup. Then cans and bottles it right on site. He also makes and sells various candies made from syrup. I over indulged in the sugar cookies and can't eat em now. Too good. Too sweet.
The gifts from God so many don't know the gift from trees there not just wood. You are vary Knowledgeable. Thank for all your time you give us filming, working, you do so much for our Entertainment. Thank you
Your daughter and wife are so pretty!! I wish I had maple trees!
That's far to many trees to try and keep track of, I'd rather just remember the 3 or 4 here in Florida. Pine trees, Palm trees, Oak trees, and Money trees...😂😅 Love what you're doing ❤️
Maple syrup is “nectar of the gods,” as Dad would say. He made pancakes for every Sunday night supper-feeding himself, Ma, eight kids, and our Irish grandfather. A tribe! To this day, my sibs and I wax poetic at mention of maple syrup. Rock on!
Your daughter is such a little Mini-Me of YOU.... so cute and smart... good job pops !.... sweet video too eh?
That was so neat to watch. Never knew you could do that. Your wife is gonna want a bunch now to have for baking. Good to see her and your daughter in the video. Never knew you had that many different trees on your property or your surroundings.
I think I am maple sugar envious, nice going.
Wow...what s wonderful world it is👈👈👈maple 🍁 syrup boiled down from sap to pancake 🥞 syrup to now you boys are making it into maple sugar for long storage👈👈👈what a fantastic idea. I m sure you boys enjoyed the process just by watching it turns into the final product 👍👍👍, good job and well done!!!💋❤️🇸🇬
Thanks for showing the different trees in the beginning! I watch you with my 11 year old son and he says you always teach him something.
🤣LMAO!! That stuffs CRAZY good! Loved this one! ( did you say Spruce have pine needles?)🤣
Looked amazingly tasty. Many thanks for sharing the joy of harvesting and creating a natural treat.
Excellent. Loved seeing the family!
I love the show. Bizarre building the strangers construction. It's always so sweet
mid week entertainment and an education ! thanks Kev
Kevin DON HOW IS IT GOING FOR YOU??? Both of you are sugared on up now!!! Love my maple sugar that I have in my house !!! I have some molds that are maple leaves OLD ONES and I will pour some of the maple sugar into them and have them as candies around the house then !!!
When I was a kid we lived for a couple of years on the edge of the Beaver Valley, near Markdale, we got to make maple syrup with a couple of neighbours. Their setup was a 44 gallon drum over a brick firebox. As an Aussie, it was a pretty awesome experience. NOTHING in this world is better than maple syrup.

I couldn't agree with you more.
Used Poplar to make spoon rack for my college sweetheart at LSU in 201 elective class lol. Appreciate you knowledge and respect for mother nature brother! All our best!
A maple tree will always have opposite arrangement of its new branches (best way to know in spring / winter) a red maple will have large red buds that swell in the spring where the Sugar maple will have small and sharp buds
What an ending! 🤣🤣 maple sugar monster
Great video Kevin. Heard on Maple Sugar but seeing it masses was a indeed a learning experience. Enjoy your hard work.
That was an awesome video. Now I want to try some maple sugar for my coffee.
Is this a maple tree?😅 You are a beautiful person! I enjoy this so much.
other alternative video titles - "Being Canadian 101" and "Sugar Coma in the woods with Kevin" XD
A video during the week heck yeah!!
Drinking it straight out of the tree is the most amazing drink there is. “Sugar Bob” out of Vermont makes GREAT maple syrup……AMAZING. I think it’s the best there is.
LOL! I Knew you were going to say that !!!! Because It has buckets hanging all over it... LOL!
Fantastic episode Kevin!
That was amazing, I love the way you made that, I have maple trees all around my house but unfortunately they are small, don't think they would be able to provide enough sap for much at all
Awesome vid I love maple syrup ❤️from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Really appreciate all the tree knowledge! A few of my taps this year are just 3 inch lengths of bamboo and a string holding up a 2 litre soda bottle 😆 working beautifully
My Father told me that my Grandfather made maple cream..... he had a rotating paddle in it as it boiled.... I don't live that far north now..Sugar Maple trees are sort of rare here.... but maybe someday I'll have sugar Maples again.
I didn't know you had so many types of trees! I figured it was just pine and maple there lol
I love brown sugar and lemon juice on my pancakes. I would love to try maple sugar and lemon juice. 😍
Truly excellent video. Chock full of great information. “C” was waiting for you to identify oak. Here, in our pocket of New England, we are entirely surrounded by oaks. However, a neighbor down the road has a small stand of maples. I see the buckets every March. I should make friends and learn. Thank you for your videos!
Hi Kevin. Another interesting video. Thanks.

I can imagine the sugar rush you are having lol 🤣
I hope one day I'll be able to try some homemade maple syrup I've still never tried store brought either lol so I'll start with that
Amazing video. Love watching you and Don work. Question though. Did you have to be taught how to make Maple Syrup or are all Canadians born with the knowledge to make the best stuff on the planet?
@ModernSelfReliance

At an early age I think most Canadians are forced to work in the forest collecting buckets of water from trees.
Very cool!
Pretty cool.
