"I never thought I would be able to film Sufjan. I had tried my luck one time before, but the good man needs his time, a kind of slow build into a calm moment of rare revelation. And so it was no surprise that, 10 minutes before filming him, he kind a freaked out, saying, with fleeing and frightened eyes, like an animal being hunted..."

please don't ever delete this video, i come back to it every few years just to bask in the beauty
"I'm in awe of big songs, national anthems, rock opera, the Broadway musical. But what I always come back to, after the din and drum roll, is the small song that makes careful observations about everyday life. This is what makes the music by TIM so moving and profound. 'Lakes of Canada' creates an environment both terrifying and familiar using sensory language: incandescent bulbs and rowboats are made palpable by careful rhythms, unobtrusive rhyme schemes, and specificity of language" - sufjan

So pure
i remember my friend converted this to mp3 and then downloaded this to his ipod to show me on the way home from school one day because we both loved sufjan so much lol
I like how he says "Fuck! It's too cold!" and then in the next shot he's got a jacket. I don't know why but that made me giggle.
Almost 11 years later, and I’m back here again.
A friend of mine introduced me to The Innocence Mission (the adorable Pennsylvania couple/High school sweethearts and friends who wrote this tune) ages ago. One day I’m looking for more of their music and this brilliant piece pops up leading me into a wondrous world of Sufjan, Shara, Over the Rhine (somehow), Rosie Thomas, Denison Witmer, the National, the Dessners, Mason Jar, St. Vincent, Fleet Foxes, Fr. John Misty and on and on and… To the flaming souls who can’t help but burn, Thank You! ❤️🔥
I first heard this when I was 23. I’m 35 and it still has the same impact.
This video exists for more than 12 years and KZread chooses to tell me about it now.... unbelievable
its been 11 years since i first cried listening to this, and since then I've changed changed career paths more times than i can count, found and lost love, lived in 4 different places and watched my kitty grow up into a fat old cat (bigger kitty...) but one thing hasn't changed. it still makes me cry. thanks sufjan

Have a listen to the original, by The Innocence Mission. I only just heard it and it’s great
You know that feeling you get when hear a song for the first time and you get a tingly warm sensation and you suddenly for sure know that true love is possible and real and you have the dumbest grin on your face to prove it? Totally just felt it.
9 years later, still goosebumpin

It takes a lot for me to show this to someone.
haven't watched this in probably 11 or 12 years, and randomly stumbled upon it again today. what a gem. glad i found my way back to it.
thank you sufjan for toughing out the cold. this is video is of immortal beauty and has brought me so much joy.
I don’t love a lot of things in my life, but Sufjan Stevens is probably one of those things that I love more than everything
I was a fan of The Innocence Mission long before I was a fan of Sufjan Stevens (and in both instances, "fan" is such an inadequate abbreviation for "fanatic"). When I discovered this video years ago, I could not believe my good fortune. I have listened to it many times since. The tears flow every time. "Talk of loneliness in quiet voices, I am shy, but you can reach me..." Please, please, never delete this video.
I love this version of "The lakes of Canada" and I also love "He woke me up again" and "The owl and the tanager". I love this video and La Blogotheque. And I love Sufjan Stevens most of all.
Je t'aime, Sufjan.
His voice is my escape from reality...Sufjan is my ecstasy...why he is underrated....I want justice lord?!
Been coming back to this for over a decade now
This is so hauntingly beautiful. I can't stop coming back to this video.

Then you should listen to the original by the Innocence Mission. Theirs is even more hauntingly beautiful and deserves to be credited on here.
I heard this when I was 17. It was a staple in my music library. Now I’m 33, and it feels like that was a lifetime ago. Every time I listen I feel 17 again. This beautiful, spontaneous piece of live music will live on forever in my heart. Thanks, SS.
I keep coming back to this one. What a rarefied piece of musical performance we are privileged to witness again and again.
It's 2021 and I still listen to this. How this has 1.82 million views, only, is beyond me. Deserves far more popularity. Upvote and share! The song (though not entirely original to Sufjan Stevens), the video; surely, they are works of art worthy of admiration, regardless of when and where. Yet, strangely, for me, this song captures the "when and where", when I listen to it.
I'm playing this song almost every day on my banjo. Really really beautiful song.
I just realized he's playing "All Delighted People" on guitar in the very beginning. Listen closely that's definitely it!
8 years ago I found this video. Back then it was one of the only songs of Sufjan Stevens on here. Its nice to watch it again.
he is my favorite. even if he just recorded himself talking i would still listen.
I don't know what it is about most Take Away Shows but some band members always seem distant and vacant but Sufjan is such a lively guy and he seems really nice
This tiny prayer. I can't belive its taken me til 2019 to find this. Sufjan x TIM is a dream.
Its been almost 20 years and this video still gives me chills
So good, I wish he had done a Take Away Sow with the song he starts singing in the beginning, "He Woke Me Up Again." That's my favorite Sufjan Song

One of the most beautiful pieces of music I know and search for to this day.

My favourite musician atop my favourite city; pure love. I recall crying the first time I'd seen this. I am and remain so thankful of your having convinced a reluctantly chilly man to entertain your idea. Result: absolute beauty.

Look for me another day. I feel that I could change, I feel that I could change. There's a sudden joy that's like a fish, a moving light; I thought I saw it rowing on the lakes of Canada Oh laughing man, what have you won? Don't tell me what cannot be done. My little mouth, my winter lungs, don't tell me what can't be done. Walking in the circle of a flashlight someone starts to sing, to join in. Talk of loneliness in quiet voices. I am shy but you can reach me. Rowing on the lakes of Canada, rowing on the lakes of Canada. Oh laughing man, what have you won? Don't tell me what cannot be done. My little mouth, my winter lungs, don't tell me what can't be done. Look for me another time Give me another day I feel that I could change Rowing on the lakes of Canada
Watching and hearing on this day of May 9,2024. I’ll be back.
Listening to this to me it's like coming home.

You do realize this is a cover? The Innocence Mission did the song originally.
how is this 15 years ago, time stands still
I do prefer this over the original, but only because of the voice. It's a really great song and I can't get enough right now :)
the piano in the end is "The Owl and The Tanager" !! :) in a tiny version though'
Singing, playing and not falling. What an artist.
used to listen to this in my junior/senior years of highschool while i was on the bus. it meant so much to me at the time, and it means a lot to me now that im able to find it again :)
"lets go back inside, its too cold!" -2 seconds later- wearing his jacket XD
2019 and still just as gorgeous.
This has brought me infinite joy over the years.
Hands down, my fav live performance by sufjan
Intimate and Raw, just what we needed🌻🌻
i first listened to this when this video came out, in the transition from my teens to my 20s. this performance has stuck with me throughout the years, and i come back to listen to it from time to time. i'm so happy to see other people in the comments say the same, that it moved them the same way it did me. makes u feel a little less alone. music is amazing in its power (thank u sufjan!!!)
i think it's proof that someone has talent when their audience cries because they are so taken into the music and his voice
39°06'31.1"N 84°31'06.4"W That's the exact location of where Sufjan is standing in this video, for those interested!
Easily the most beautiful thing on the Internet, and it’s especially impactful as I get glimpses of my town/neighborhood’s skyline in the background
I wish there was a studio version, because this is simply beautiful.

I watched this video the very day it was uploaded. Four years later, I'm still not tired of it. That's music.
it's beautiful. his voice is incredible and the banjo stirs all my inner canadian rural compassion
I could sit here and watch this channel the entire day.
i love those windy kind of days where the sky is white and cloudy.
All these years later, I return to this video. It brings me home.
One of my favorite Innocence Mission songs played by one of my OTHER favorite artists. So amazingly gorgeous. THANK you, Sufjan.
I honestly cannot stop watching this video.

Think it is safe to say this is my favourite video on all of the interwebs.
The Innocence Mission. Amazing band.
Sufjan is an incredible artist who has help me discover at lot of good music in the past decade. This song in particular was the first song I heard from him. Honestly it's a priceless piece, this set, and I hope it will continue to help more people discover their music taste. Shout out to everyone listening to this in 2021!!!
i adore everything about this
The world becomes a little more beautiful listening to Sufjan. This man is a saint.
I discovered him for mystery of love and call me by your name soundtrack and i just can't stop listening to him, he's so pure and his voice it's just angelical and i want to thank Luca for made me know him wow
im i the only one here who cries when i hear sufjan play live? my all time favorite musician hands down, forever!
you guys can't fathom the serenity i get when mr.stevens plays his vibrations
Anyone who likes this should seriously, thoroughly, check out The Innocence Mission. They are extraordinary.
Thank you ***** !!! so many beautiful artists!
My first take away show, shown to me by my sister. I am still here listening. Thank you.

how anyone can argue about anything while listening to something as beautiful as this video is beyond me.
Sufjan Stevens makes my days a little brighter!
i just love him so much
this makes me want to cry because it is so incredibly sad and beautiful
Wow. Hiw brave is it that he chose a banjo. It makes this so special, you can read his passion in his face and his body language. i'm touched
lives were changed
This video alone is what got me into playing banjo and I’ve been trying to learn this ever since I started
Quand j’ai un petit coup de mou, je me la repasse, et elle me fait toujours autant d’effet... Merci Sufjan, je t’aime !! 🤩
my favorite artist covering one of my favorite songs. pure bliss
This makes me miss my hometown... that was a great MusicNowFest. Midwestern memories... cold.... sufjan.
Sufjan is the only american I can think of that could sing this song with as much integrity as any Canadian. He searches for the integrity in everything he does and that genuine character really comes through when he sings this. Thanks for putting this up. You've made my day!

Thank you Sufjan Stevens for making music that truly relaxes me.
i love the contrast in the architecture behind him. its so relevant to his sound as well, some of the old, with some of the new.
This is my favorite song of all time. This version stands alone.
out of this fucked up society, a man of true brilliance and love came forward.
WHO CAN RIP THIS COVER FOR US??!! this sounds so much better on the banjo and with a male voice, in my humble opinion.
All versions of this song are beautiful!!!!!!! Even the original, so yeah.
