Suede & Leather Galore | 2018 Mazda6 Signature Full Tour & Review

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Our most anticipated car has finally hit the market! The 2018 Mazda6 Signature is our Snapshot today. Read our article with photos: goo.gl/sSVvVa
Special thanks to Mazda du Boulevard Saint-Hyacinthe for letting us film their first 2018 Mazda 6 Signature: www.mazdasthyacinthe.com
We had the chance to feature the 2017 Mazda6 GT 6MT last year, in fact it was the first car we got directly from the manufacturer, and we published our episode right around the time the 2018 Signature was announced at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Fast forward 4 months and we finally have the chance to see this car in the flesh and start it up.
The 2018 Mazda 6 Signature is powered by Mazda's 2.5L SkyActiv-G turbocharged inline 4 engine producing 250 horsepower with premium fuel, and 310 lb-ft of torque. Matted to their 6-speed automatic transmission, the option for a manual has been killed off for this model year on all trims in Canada. The Mazda 6 Signature offers more to buyers looking for premium feel without paying premium price.
The exterior has an updated design throughout, with a new front grille and bumper design similar to the 2018 Mazda CX-5. Fog lamps are not available on this trim, but full adaptive LED headlights are, including LED tail lights and interior dome lighting. Front and rear parking sensors are included, along with a 360º top view camera system.
Inside we find Ultrasuede® and leather trim throughout which is the first vehicle Mazda is selling with this material combination. The pearl white leather trim certainly stands out, and the black roof liner gives this car a premium feel. Front and rear heated seats are found, including front ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel. The dual-zone automatic climate control has also been updated.
Mazda has also updated their HomeLink® rearview mirror to match the current model offered by HomeLink®. The glass power moonroof up top brings in extra light, and the restyled 8" Mazda Connect infotainment screen provides the user experience we've come to expect from Mazda. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are still not available at this time, but they are expected to be retroactively available come fall 2018.
Finally Mazda has updated the gauge cluster display with a larger 7" screen that provides some extra information along with the standard fuel economy and safety technology data from previous models. The colour head-up display is also a nice touch carried over from previous models, and is one of the better systems we've used.
We try to make this episode as full and comprehensive as possible, giving you a full tour of the 2018 Mazda 6 Signature and everything we feel is important to buyers. Since we only had the car for a short while we don't go over our likes/dislikes as we normally do on TestDrive, but we hope to get this car again at a later date in order to feature in more depth.

    Thanks! We’ve been waiting for this car for quite some time, and while we might have been unconventional in our approach to get this car filmed, we’re very proud of it. We think this is a very important car for Mazda and wanted to get it out in front of the public as early as possible.

    Trade up to Lexus you won't regret it , so much better than a Mazda it isn't even a close comparison. For a start Rear Wheel Drive makes all the difference and get an F Sport Series and they are a lot of fun. I guess if you are more budget conscious it can seem like a good deal but that front wheel drive spoils everything.

    Finally a light and bright interior for a change - beautiful, classy, and uplifting! What's with today's trend of black interiors that most reviews show? Black leather(ette) not only burns your butt in the summer, it does not keep clean at all as dirt is brown not black hence it doesn't hide anything. People think black looks cool but because of dirt, it just looks cheap. Glad someone has taste in this review!

  • @PRNTestDrive

    It's often not the decision of journalists when it comes to the interior colour of the cars they review, same in our case with this car. This is what the dealer got, so we reviewed it. Other Canadian journalists who were invited to Mazda's launch event drove what they were given, which I believe were all the dark chestnut interior. We agree that it's nice to see a new option for the interior with this car, we imagine Mazda will add white to the CX-9 Signature also.

    This car looks so stunning, almost like a Jag! How does this Signature trim drive compared to a similarly spec'ed Audi/Lexus (FWD), from a driving experience point of view (just like your CX-5 vs BMW X1 comparison)? Of course, the luxury brands offer some really cool interior features, but I'm already satisfied with what Mazda has done with this Signature trim.

    We had no issues with the 2017 Mazda6 with the manual in the snow. You do need to drive it like a FWD car, so it won't be invincible in the snow, but I find front wheel is better than rear wheel. We feel a FWD car like this can be just as maneuverable in the snow with a really good set of tires as an AWD vehicle is with ok winter tires.

    I like the front end design! The new grille is much better looking than the horizontal bars of the previous one! They looked a bit conservative! As for the rear end, the integration of the turn signals in the tail lights looks a bit like an afterthought, they could have done a much fancier design! But I like the integration of the chromed fillet in the tail lights! Looks really sleek! The interior looks excellent!! It has come a long way since the conservative interior it had when it was launched back in 2012!! Shame we have no importer, I'd go for a drive in this car!!

I had seen one other YT video showing a ruby red example, with tan leather interior!! Imagine adding suede as well!! Or, premium-specced versions of the 2 and 3 models, when they get their fancy interior redesign!! Some people want the flashy stuff!!

    Having reviewed current Mazda's, what are your thoughts the current attention to detail/tech? For example my 16 Mazda 6 GT Tech lacks A compass, memory side mirrors (synced with the seat memory), lacks a power outlet for backseat passengers, mood lighting, and believe it or not..the backseat arm rest does not even have a strap attached to pull it down; you must shove your fingers into the gap -- my previous car 13 Ford Fusion Titanium had all of this and more for comparison

  • @PRNTestDrive

    Mazda definitely needs to continue to improve their vehicles if they want to stay competitive. It's small details like you mentioned that will end up killing them in the long run if they don't start adding them in. While we really like this Mazda6 and the CX-5, the competition is improving their offerings a lot quicker, and will leave Mazda in the dust if they don't act on it.

    Hey I think you are wrong about premium fuel, I read about the new Mazda's motor and you can use both premium or regular just like the Honda, also like the Honda the computer will compensate by reducing boost and timing based on the fuel used

  • @PRNTestDrive

    @PRNTestDrive

    6 жыл бұрын

    You can absolutely use regular fuel! We never said you had to, but if you want the full power then Mazda states in all their documentation that you need to use 93 octane to get it. That’s the main difference, Honda doesn’t need premium to get the most out of their engine, it’s regular all the way, and 99% of buyers of this Mazda6 will use regular also.

    We think so too, and our opinion about Mazda's infotainment has certainly changed quite a lot since the summer when we bought our CX-5. It's not the worst, but it's far to be the best. Even with the Android Auto/Apple CarPlay update coming later this year it still doesn't shine amongst the competition.

    Having a VW dealer nearby I can never get enough of that red colour. I have no idea how VW manages to do that but their colors look like plastic with a bit of nail polish on them. I wish that we could get a yellow Mazda 6 (or at least Miata) back, because those always looked great and with people in charge of the colors I'm sure they would come up with something amazing.

    I’m surprised they don’t offer more colours for the MX-5 actually, you’d think they’d offer a wider selection to allow people to really customize it.

  • @jeffs6090

    @jeffs6090

    I understand that it is totally a cost reduction reason for manufacturers to provide a rather limited amount of colors, but it would be amazing to have either a large choice or a choose your own color option. Companies like Bentley has a crazy amount of choices, and they are all incredible! Audi also has an option for color matching and they will make what ever color you want. It costs quite a bit, but when buying an RS7, that extra cost doesn't matter to that buyer. It would be nice for these to trickle down to every car. While I'm on this soap box....every car should come standard with all the "bells and whistles" (the blind spot, lane keep, 360 camera, better infotainment system, sound system, etc). The only options a person should have on their car is engine choice, wheels, interior and exterior colors. This would also reduce the overall cost of making the car since there would only be one electrical wiring harness needed, one dashboard to make, etc. German cars are the absolute worst offenders with all the extra options. You want an X3, and after you add all the safety options and things most everyone wants, it now costs 50% more. It's ridiculous! With all the options, there's more than one hundred ways to configure a car. That is what makes them so expensive. Overall cost would be less if those options were all standard. Especially the safety ones, because...they're safety items. They need to be mandated as standard just like seat belts and airbags.

    That's certainly true, but we labelled this episode as a Snapshot, which is a shorter episode that doesn't go into full depth on a lot of the tech or driving. We've covered a lot of Mazda's tech in the 2018 CX-9 Signature and 2018 CX-5 GT episodes, but we were hoping to get a Mazda6 Signature from the press fleet in order to do a full episode down the road, which is why we published this one as a shorter episode.

    We've read the media kit, and we know they mention it in there. But nowhere else has it been mentioned, including on the consumer Mazda websites. No one has been able to explain what's been 'integrated'. Are they on all the time? That would make them running/parking lights. If we had the car for a longer period of time and during the night we could test it out further. At the end of the day the fog lights normally located at the bottom of the car have been removed. If they've been 'integrated' then they aren't really fog lights.

    I appreciate your work, man! I like Mazda. In fact, I drive a 2017 CX5 GT. But I don't understand some of their decisions. Wouldn't they have a better take rate if they had a saddle brown choice, for instance, instead of that difficult-to-keep-clean white interior? Then there is my pet peeve - removing the fog lights. I don't know which is worse: replacing the fog lights by fake air vents or replacing them by a strip of chrome. Otherwise, a beautiful car.

  • @PRNTestDrive

    They do offer a similar dark chestnut brown interior for the Signature trim, we've been told it's a bit darker than what's on the CX-9 Signature. We've asked one of the dealers out here to post some photos of it on Twitter, we'll be sharing them on my @NileLivesey account to see how it differs. We agree though, white isn't our thing, the brown would be our pick. Black should be on the list too as a lot of buyers like it. And the fog light removal feels weird, not sure if it was a design decision, a cost decision, or an "Audi S/RS don't have them, neither will we' decision.

    The difference with the first Gen Mazda6’s fog lamps were independent control and filaments. There is no switch to turn these on, and in one video a dealer says they’re on all the time. Fog lights are meant to be low to the ground to cut under fog. I haven’t found an explanation as to how they work, are they different bulbs pointing toward the immediate road in front of the car and before the headlights would normally illuminate? There are a lot questions we have about this and no answers seem to exist.

    Bob Nagana I am sure that many people like this look. And that’s fine. I prefer them at the bottom of the bumper, the way Mazda had them in the 2014 model. I find that aesthetically more appealing. Many companies are moving away from them. I am glad that Honda and BMW still have them, at least on some of their models.

    I own a 2017 M6 with white interiors. Trust me it's not as difficult as we think maintaining as the leather doesn't absorb any stains. Most of them go away on wiping with a wet cloth. I was apprehensive too and hence purchased an interior protection package that Mazda offers. But never got to use it as whatever sticks to the leathers goes off easily. If you want to be double sure, get a wax coating which would last for few months and makes maintenance a breeze. If you love the white interiors, take it, you'll not regret it.

  • @jeffs6090

    @jeffs6090

    6 жыл бұрын

    I have heard rumors about the movement of manufacturers to using only premium fuel for all vehicles. This would therefore render the lower octanes obsolete. Especially with most cars having 2L turbo 4cy engines nowadays, the use of premium in them allows for much higher performance and better fuel economy. It will be a slow move, however, to most to all cars citing premium as the recommended fuel for those reasons. Therefore, it will cost more to fill up your car (for people who are not used to using premium previously in their $30k car) until it becomes mainstream and lower octanes are no longer produced and offered. Once that happens, then premium shouldn't cost as much since it'll be all that is made.

    Yes, we had hoped for both! Half the competition is offering panoramic moonroofs as options, and Nissan is the first Japanese automaker to go AWD with their consumer-segment midsize sedan in North America. The Chrysler 300 and Ford Fusion are the other two in the segment we can think of that offer AWD.

    Asphalt only in North America people love sunroof so much... I dont know why, yes my family in the past has a Mercedes with a big sunroof and it was cool but is expensive, can leak water, expensive if is broken and add extra weight on the top of the car, is not worth for me...

    I think premium is something like $1.70 in Montreal right now, even regular out here is close to $1.40. Still likely cheaper than across the pond, but about 40% more than what we paid around a year ago in Ontario.

    Keep in mind all the other cars in that list need regular fuel for their gas, so if you put the same in the Mazda it would only have 227 horsepower. We love the exterior and interior design of this car, but it is missing some key features we find in other vehicles. While the Kia's interior and exterior design is relatively conservative, they do have one of the best infotainment systems on the market, paired with the panoramic moonroof and rear window sun shades. The quilted nappa leather is also insanely comfortable. That's why we think the Kia Optima is still the king of the hill in this segment. It doesn't offer everything, but nudges it's way ahead of the rest by a little bit.

    There's no doubt that the Mazda6 doesn't sell well anymore. The first generation was very popular in Ontario, and we still see plenty of them on the road. I think Mazda has been the hardest hit in this segment as buyers flock to crossovers. We love cars and we'd definitely take this over the CX-5 or CX-9.

  • @PRNTestDrive

    It is a touch screen, it just doesn't allow for touch when the vehicle is in motion just like Mazda's displays in other cars. We did like the infotainment offering when we bought our CX-5, but we've had the chance to drive a lot of other cars since, and do agree that it could use some enhancing. It works well, but doesn't stand out compared to the competition.

    Actually, it is because of Mazda and Volvo that ford even sells anything half decent today. And anything Mazda had to compromise on was directly related to fords skimping. Look at the Eunos, that interior was the most advanced in its day. It was truly a luxury automobile. Mazda has always had premium in their DNA, they just needed to wait until the right era, when every other make has to make a cheap model and a lipstick model, Mazda gets to just make a damn beautiful car that doesn’t cost a fortune.
