The reason cousins do that in Ethiopia is because there is no expectation of Romance. Since Sudanese are Muslim, cousin marriage is a normal thing and once that is at the back of your mind, then casual touching and close relationship is frowned upon ( at least before marriage). Even Muslims in Ethiopia do not marry cousins because of the heavy cultural taboo

I completely agree with your comment about the Ethiopian/Sudanese culture being a collective culture (they look out for one another, and are very close), and the American culture is an individualist culture ( they are more to themselves, and independent minded). For example, the reason Americans leave people at the door doesn't have as much to do with hospitality as it has to do with safety. Americans are extremely concerned with safety more so because we are not a collective culture, and as a whole, we don't tend to look out for one another as much. Great video!!!💚

Nice video guys. It's nice to hear about the foot washing tradition in Ethiopia. This would make sense since Ethiopia is a majority Christian country. It is a Biblical/Jewish tradition to wash the feet of a guest. Even Jesus washed the feet of His disciples. This is a cool aspect of your husband's culture.

The touchy part in Ethiopian culture is very true. I remember once we had european family neighbors come over to our house in Ethiopia and my cousin and I (both male) were sitting with them talking while hugging each other, which is so normal. Then they told us that we would be considered gays if we did that in europe. I remember becoming so confused and never understood them what the hell they were talking about until I came to the west 😂. Cousins for example in Ethiopian christian culture are treated like brother and sister. No one even think of having sexual intercourse with his/her cousin. It is like doing it with your sister/brother. Many Ethiopians even introduce their cousins as sister or brother and not as cousins to emphasise their true relationship. You only find later that they are in reality cousins. In Ethiopian christian culture marrying your relative up to 7 generation is forbidden. That is why relatives are very touchy because it is absolutely impossible even to think about anything sexual with your relatives. In many parts of Ethiopia there is a family union day before any marriage can take place. Both families (elders) come together and "count" their ancestors to be sure that the couple are not related in any way.

TheFhdude LOL that first part is funny! Westerners are always so quick to call something "gay". And yeah I didn't understand why close friends and cousins are introduced as brother and sister it just confused me!! That is really interesting about the 7 generations rule. I didn't know that! Thank you for teaching me something new!

Ameena Ahmed If you notice, there’s not that many hotels or motels in Sudan. Literally , myself and grandpa we used to go to the bus station after sunset and bring people that couldn’t make it to their destination over to our house till next morning. The funny thing is some of them they will end up stay over for months to come. For your information this will happen only in Sudan. Love Sudan to death.

It sure is true when you said Ethiopian people treat everyone like brothers and sisters. My best friend and her family all consider me family and we mention that very often about each other too. We eat together and share everything. I am used to that but it's not typical American culture, as you mentioned. We are blending our two cultures together. Love your videos!

In Somali culture you call your cousin my sister or my brother and same goes for even second or third cousin hhhh just like our brothers ethiopians. Also before the somali civil war we were very touchy with each other girls and boys family and close friends then after the civil war we become like Saudi Arabia for some reason, very very strict. Nice video...
