Suctioning the endotracheal tube - medical animation

Ғылым және технология

Endotracheal suctioning (ETS) is a necessary practice carried out in intensive care by nurses. As shown in this medical animation, It involves the removal of pulmonary secretions from a patient with an artificial airway in place. Suctioning clears mucus and is essential for proper breathing as secretions left in the tube could become contaminated and a chest infection could develop. This is imperative if surgery is a requirement.
After intubation, the closed-suction technique is the preferred method for suctioning because the patient is connected to the ventilator throughout the suctioning procedure which facilitates continuous oxygenation. The closed-suction technique allows for a continued tidal volume delivery to the patient with minimal loss of lung volume. Closed suctioning is suggested for an adult patient with high fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) or positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) or for a patient who is at risk for lung derecruitment.

This was happened to my mom before she succumed to stage 4 colon cancer multiple organ failure after pneumonia infection due to choking while in hospital. And the cancer that has spread to her lymph nodes hindering her kidney to function. It was really a heartbreaking, frightening, and upsetting experience to see your love one's expiring in the ICU. But dont worry if someone's about to get this procedure, I believe its not the intubation that caused her death but it's only the last resort to save her. The intubation is still on case to case basis because some other patients on the ICU get pulled out after being intubated. Get screened as early as possible to detect early signs of cancer. And always maintain a healthy lifestyle, its not on our genes to have a cancer.
