    My dad owned a well drilling company where the majority of his work was drilling and installing water well systems for residential home. And let me tell you, nothing moves slower than something on its way to falling down a well. Its a chain of events that all happen in super slow motion, but also end up being kind of a blur. Before you know it, you're arm is shoulder deep in the well, helplessly reaching for the 'thing', but its gone. (smart phone, amp meter, pipe wrench, just to name a few)

    Oh, I’ve definitely experienced that time slowing when I’ve dropped something I think it’s kinda related to a theory as to why time speeds up when you get older-basically it’s because your brain processing/visual/auditory/etc. slows as you age, so it’s almost like you aren’t getting as many ‘frames per second’ to put it in video game terms. So when you drop something, your brain kicks into a quick hyper awareness and….yeah, trippy stuff

  • @Zeuskabob1

    @Zeuskabob1

    I think it's more correlated with memory forming. When something falls your brain kicks into high gear recording everything as it happens because of higher stress, and then afterwards you remember it happening as if in slow motion because you remember every moment of it happening. I think it's a memory-based illusion like deja vu.

    In regards to the time slowing down sensation, there is a reason for that. Our eyes operate like a video with a set refresh rate. For sake of argument say it is 60 frames per second. Our sense of time is partially based on how many frames the brain sees, so if we see 90 frames our brains equate that to 1.5 seconds. During periods of stress our body kicks into overdrive and ups our eyes' refresh rate to, say, 120 frames per second. So in that same 1.5 seconds we now see 180 frames. But our brain still calculates time normally so it thinks 3 seconds have passed. Net result, it feels like more time has passed than actually did, which gives the impression of things being in slow motion.

    The reason things appear to be slow motion is that we're in a simulation and it's a bit of computational lag to figure out how to simulate our reaction and physics of the falling object..... that or our eyes are really broken pieces of evolutionary jank and lies to our brain about information (like looking away from a clock hand then looking back and it taking longer than a second to tick over).
