But make the water level rise. And it doesn't rise all the way to the top. It makes you do the last section and only the last section. But if you miss the last jump once, you either have to redo the entire level or wait for the water to go ALL the way down AND up again for your second attempt (or just restart). Oh, and don't forget that mushroom! (and prob change the ending to have the switch state matter).

As a linguist the egg corn discussion was super fun. Some egg corns have become permanent fixtures in our language. "Card shark" is a really well documented one, it was originally "Card sharp" but was misheard so often that the phrase changed for everyone.

I think, honestly, the thing that makes Mario Maker troll levels so cool is the fact that they're made *in Mario Maker*. It's like taking a brush, and three colors of paint, and finding every possible combination, and half the time finding chemical reactions to make new colors from what you already have, and creating a goddamn masterpiece.

I agree with this because, like Carl said, you could do *anything* with a romhack, but that has both pros and cons. In a Mario Maker level, you already know all the mechanics that are in the game, you have the same set of tools available when you're making a level as the creator had when making their level - when your expectations are subverted, it's surprising because you already have an educated guess on what SHOULD happen, but it was subverted anyway. With a romhack, ANYTHING can happen - if your expectations are subverted, and the explanation is just "I coded it to act differently", it doesn't have that same surprise value because you would never have been able to guess what would happen correctly anyway. Not to say that romhack trolls are inherently worse than Mario Maker trolls, because sometimes that extra freedom CAN be funnier, but having a consistent set of rules, knowing what those rules are, and then still being surprised by them is far more effective for me than being surprised by rules that could be made up on the spot.

Unlikely this will ever get seen. But in the VERY next video, I watched the creator said "fingering it out" rather than "figuring it out". Best follow-up video ever :) I never post, but as a Ph.D. in a clinical science field (working in academic medicine) I often feel burnt out or unhelpful. But your videos and passion for your day job keep me grounded. I am very grateful for your attitude. It has helped me greatly. Thank you.

My main language is French, and as a kid, I thought "Spider web" (web -> toile) was "Spider star" (star -> étoile). It made sense to me, considering they have that star-ish shape to them!

To the eggcorn discussion - for a good while I was very confused why "Youth in Asia" was a discussion of morals.

Working in the pharmacy, customers always said “dont give me any genetics” instead of generics(less expensive alternative to brand name).

On the misunderstood sayings stuff, my mum used to say "Too bad, how sad" but I always heard "too bad, house ad" I never understood it and just accepted it after a while, didn't question it for a long time xD And yeah, I usually call these Bone Apple Teas, because that's the subreddit for them I'm aware of, but eggcorns is a sick name too

Re: funny misunderstandings A thing that happens to non native speakers is that you hear a song before you know English and the suddenly 10 years later you hear the song again and you realize al those sounds have meanings. It's not "diep zeep babie" but "deep sea baby"

On eggcorn: I always heard "It's a doggy dog world" which is, in retrospect, a much more wholesome phrase

About your egg corn question carl, I do not know if it fully counts but here goes. English is not my first language and when I grew up even before getting English in school I already knew some english because of all the movies, series and music that is in English. I always thought English was a more sensible language then my mother tongue purely judged by how it sounded and then I started getting english in school, the shock I felt when realizing that there, their and they're were not the same word and spelling (had only heard it spoken up to that point).

I was the doofus in chat at the end who conflated eggcorns with mondegreens. As I found out that day, they're in a similar vein but are ultimately slightly different concepts! That's one thing I love about Larl's streams - I always end up learning something new!

@@MetaKaios From what I understand, a mondegreen is a mistake made by a listener, whereas a malapropism is a mistake made by a speaker. I could be wrong, as it turns out I was concerning the difference between eggcorns and mondegreens, but that's at least my understanding of the difference. On a slightly unrelated note, one of my favorite examples of a malapropism comes from the show Trailer Park Boys. When making claims regarding his mother's maiden name, the character Ricky refers to it as her "mating name".

On the "from the gecko" thing: German speakers have this thing with the famous song "Zombie" from The Cranberries, where instead of hearing "Zombie" we hear "Zahnweh" which means "tooth ache" and it makes so much sense with the way she cries it out. :D Or the song from SNAP! "I Got The Power" we mishear as "Agate Bauer", which is a common name in our countries.

My main language is German, and as a kid there was a small time period when I thought that the word "Labyrinth" was pronounced like "Langes Rind", which would basically translate to "long cow" but I can't remember having that the other way around.

That launcher setup that causes the launcher to bounce up pretty high looks to only work in night mode and uses the fire flower to bounce on the note block right above the clown car as the player jumps.

Misheard song lyrics are sometimes called "mondegreens" in English ("They hae slain the Earl o' Moray / And Lady Mondegreen [laid him on the green]"). There also is an old website called "Kiss this Guy" (after the misheard Jimi Hendrix lyrics "excuse me while I kiss the sky").

The topic of eggcorns around 6 minutes in unlocked a memory of mine and i’m not sure if this counts but i’ll share anyway. So, background, my full, legal first name is Alexander. I go by Alex (as most people with that name do) and have for pretty much my entire life. When I was around 4 or 5, I watched Power Rangers Mystic Force, and in that show, one of the main characters (the green ranger, if i recall correctly) was named Xander… so, somehow, I got it in my dumb little child head that, because everyone called me Alex, but sometimes also called me Alexander, my full name _must be_ Alex Xander [middle name] [last name]. It just had to be. And to make matters worse, this was at the point in my life where I was convinced either I could never be wrong or if I said something with enough confidence and conviction, it would become true. So I had numerous arguments with my parents and teachers about the fact that I did or didn’t have two middle names. But, yeah, does that count or am I just a dumbass?

the eggcorn thing is awful when learning a new language, so many words are very barely different from each other, so pronunciation is always a necessary thing to learn no matter how obvious it seems to you, you're probably wrong, but that's normal in the early stages. famous example in French is "beaucoup (many)" sounding like "beau cul (nice a*s)," but for me most embarrassingly came in the form "journée typique" (normal day) and "jeune atypique" (unusual youth)

A funny one as I was learning Chinese is the word for technical school 技術學院(jìshù xuéyuà) is often shortened to 技院 (jìyuàn). That shortened version is pronounced the same way as the word for brothel.

Just from the first few seconds, Shadekitty might be the new Stevo.

I wish other IPs would get their own Maker game. Imagine if metroidvania style Maker game, things could be so much more in-depth, and troll levels could have an insane amount of polish assuming the right base mechanics could be in place; Metroid specifically would be good, as Samus has a fairly wide set of standard abilities that would be akin to Mario's various power-ups for level design. A Maker game for 2D Sonic would also be amazing, especially if it follows the original formula where speed isn't the main focus of level design, but slowing down and adventuring to find alternate routes and secrets is the core of the game; not to mention Sonic has a better roster for allowing branching paths and mechanics. This type of game has so much potential outside of Mario, and even within the Mario IP there's so much more that could be explored, it's sad that devs aren't all that willing to pursue this genre to its fullest.

A long time ago there was an online community-created multiplayer A Link to the Past-based game. I forget how it was all connected, but anyone could create their own bit and get others to enter it. You could also add code (some high-level game logic type code) to NPCs and other interactables.

I thought for a while that Bless You was Bless Shoe or Bleh Shoe. When I took Spanish, my teacher was saying salud when people sneezed and I thought she was saying "so rude" and probably an unrelated one, but back in the mid 90's I encountered my first @ sign on a school year book advertisement, and I kept trying to make sense of "look a your year" until I eventually realized it was "look @ (at) your year" Another one that got me is when my dad would say the indicator light for door ajar and say "the door is ajar" and I was like "what? how is the door a jar?" I do wonder if anyone ever thought the "bee's knees" was the "bees sneeze" or any other number of things. That phrase is a bit before my time, but I'm sure my parents probably used it at some point. I apparently never got it wrong though.

19:43 I remember hearing about how students from even the Ivy League and MIT have ended up in cults and it really changed my perspective on the people who get sucked up into them. Like, I want to believe that I'm smart enough to never end up in them, but if _they did_ then whose to say I won't?

20:00 I agree. Once I realized I was capable of that, I've spent my whole life seeking every single way I'm wrong as a way to avoid falling into this pitfall. That, and standing by the idea that any given thing I think is true is capable of being wrong, no matter the seeming evidence. I always heard "deaf" as "death." It wasn't until someone heard me enunciate it as "death" and call me dumb, that I learn the right way to say it. It makes you second guess all the other words you've thought you were pronouncing correctly.

My Eggcorn moments were losing in Final Fantasy VII and the game over screen saying my party was Anal-lated. I did not know why my stepdad found this hilarious. The other one for me was AC/DC's famous "Dirty Deed (and a Thunder Jeep)". I didn't know what a ThunderJeep was, but it sounded cool!

Carl liked this level so much he played it 6 times!

one of the best Egg Corns is how people think its "flick off" when its really "flip off", when referring to giving the middle finger - so many people think its flick that it is on urban dictionary. Flip off is in websters.
