Joe’s 1st band was called the “James Gang”. Listen to “Walk Away” or “Funk # 49”. Super guitar work. Also the order of his career was James Gang, then solo, then Eagles. But his solo career spans all periods. One of the greatest guitar players of all time.

The last album recorded had several members of The Eagles guesting on it...same producer....and that's how Joe joined The Eagles. And can you imagine...Hotel California was the first album he recorded with them and that song contains the best guitar solos of all time by Don Felder and Joe. Epic to hear live!

He was born in Wichita, I met his grandma once in a store, she told us her grandson had a band, we said who is that, she said Joe Walsh, we freaked. At the Ozark Music Festival in Sedalia Mo in 1974, there were 300,000 people, and both the Eagles and Joe Walsh with Barnstorm were playing on Saturday night, and the Eagles were the finale and Joe Walsh came out and played with them. Not long after that, he officially joined the Eagles. It's a memory imprinted on my brain.

Though the Barnstorm albums are usually credited as Joe Walsh albums these days, so most people seem to have forgotten Barnstorm existed.

Voice box = a larynx, your vocal cords, which facilitate speech, shouting, and singing. TALK BOX = a guitar effect that turns a guitarist's mouth, skull, and throat into a speaker cabinet, allowing the guitarist to shape played notes into words and vocal expressions. Big difference.

He was with James Gang first as a lot of people commented “Funk 49” then went solo with Rocky Mountain High & Life’s Been Good as hits. That is a fun song and video off the album But Seriously Folks. You both would enjoy reacting to that song. As a solo artist he co-wrote and performed the song “In The City” for the cult classic movie “The Warriors” and recorded with the Eagles for their Long Run Album. Prior to that he was one of the guitarist on the Hotel California song that you reacted to. Joe like fellow Eagles member Timothy B. Schmidt has played with so many other artist in the recording studio it makes your head swim trying to list them.

Fantastic musician, performer, and character. Check out The James Gang’s “Funk 49” and “Walk Away” for a couple of the most badass guitar riffs ever crafted. “Life’s Been Good” is another great solo track. Sounds as fresh as the day he recorded it. And, though I am sure it has been mentioned, he was in The James Gang first, then he started his solo career, then he joined The Eagles ahead of Hotel California where he single-handedly turned them into a rock and roll band. My dad’s favorite guitar player.

"where he single handedly turned them into a rock band"???? what a blatantly misinformed statement. Are you sure that's what you want to say, or did your daddy tell you that?? If so, your ignorance of the eagles is strong. You do realize he's NOT on the (first) eagles greatest hits album at all, right?? I saw the Eagles several times in the 70's and they were rock before he joined, let me assure you of that. Anyone who says otherwise is an ignoramus. LOL, perhaps you should buy the proverbial vowel and listen to On the Border at least once before you say such things.

Definitely talkbox. This song was actually put out by his band Barnstorm, the band he formed after James Gang. He joined the Eagles in about '75, for the Hotel California album. It is him and Don Felder who do the duelling guitar solo on the song Hotel California. He's played with a few other bands at various times, too, and collabs. His solo stuff was interspersed throughout the '70s all the way to the teens (I think his last album was Analog Man around 2012). Last I heard he was touring with the Eagles again.

Most of them are perfection! Don’t say it’s best alone or in a group…if the music touches you, then it worked so don’t analyze it just enjoy it. We’re here for music appreciation, yes?😊

He has also done solo work after the Eagles reformed. That was a “Talkbox” he was playing in “Rocky Mountain Way”. The song was released on the Barnstorm album “The smoker you drink, the player you get” in 1973. Walsh said on the Howard Stern show on June 12, 2012 that the song was inspired while he was cutting the grass in his front yard in Colorado. After pausing to look at the snow capped Mountains, he said seeing the snow capped Mountains, he thought to himself “The Rocky Mountain Way was better than the life I had” and made him realize he had no regrets leaving the James Gang. He said that event formed the basis for the song.

I seen Joe Walsh with the James Gang and the Eagles!!! fact.. Joe was a party animal and doomed to die at an early age, when the leading members of the Eagles asked him to join the band, but only if he sobers up!!! he went into rehab and never looked back!!! and is still touring with the Eagles today in 2023!!! amazing stories of his life and career! One of the lucky ones to pull himself out of curtain early grave and talks about his recovery, interesting stories he tells in interviews... thanks for your review of this song!!! love you guys!! you play a lot of music that I've seen live in concert!!! keep up the good work! XOXO

Joe's repertoire had him in several bands over the years, including The James Gang and The Eagles. I was fortunate to see him in The James Gang when he backed-up Edgar Winter and Frampton's Camel in 1974. It was an outdoor concert that lasted all night long!

Anybody who writes a song called, "The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get" can't be bad. His session at Darryl's place is awesome, also.

I saw the James Gang (Joe Walsh) and Black Sabbath (Ozzy Osborne) on a weekday at the Filmore West back in 1970. Bands that were not big names played on week days and you could get in to watch them for a few dollars. I was trippin, which in those day was a almost every day occurance for me. Anyway as far as their performaces, they were already great and it wasn't long before they became big names. I hung out in San Francisco all the time. I am now 76 years old but still listen to hard rock and relive my youth.

This was pre Eagles post James Gang. You should listen to “Life’s Been Good” “In The City” and “Funk #49” (James Gang). Also “Pretty Maids All In A Row” from Hotel California with him on lead vocals, it’s one of my favs from that album.

“Pretty Maids All in a Row” is one of my favorites of his. The lyrics “and all you wishing well fools with your fortunes. Someone should send you a rose.” Is just phenomenal writing.

That is indeed a talkbox haha. I was totally obsessed with Joe Walsh in high school (2010-2014) that I'd drive my friends nuts with him loool. Me and my buddies once packed up a car in like 2014 to go from Bloomington Indiana to Louisville Kentucky which is a decent drive for us small town folk. First stop was the damn Guitar Center where I picked up my first talkbox because of this legend. Amazed all my friends when I performed the solo for the first time with the talkbox hahahaha. Joe said in one of his songs "If you just act like you know what you're doin, everybody thinks that you do." and that stuck with me forever and rang true that day. Thanks Joe!

Joe Walsh had an excellent album called " You Cant Reason With A Sick Mind . And, yes, he was one of the founding members of the Eagles.

No, Joe is not a founding member of the Eagles. Founding members were Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Bernie Leadon & Randy Meisner. Don Felder joined in '74. Joe joined in '76 to replace Bernie Leadon.
