Oh Liz!! I missed you posting last night!!! Get this: I made a huge mistake with a tray of succulents I was trying to acclimate... they were starting to stretch a tiny bit so i knew they wanted more sunlight.. so I moved the tray and in 1 day they fried to a crisp :( I'm so devastated.. I should have only moved them slightly... I've even watched your video's but I didn't expect that to happen so quickly.. I almost felt like crying.. they were doing so well. I hope I can get them to recover but .. I don't think so.... now I will watch this video :)

Thank you liz! Now I know why after I bury the roots on some of my props they still come out of the soil it's because I keep my soil very very wet. So that's telling me it's too wet! I never could understand why they did that!! ☺️ I also saved some coconut coir from a plant that I bought and used a little bit on some propagations and you're absolutely right these propagations took off so fast and they're growing so big! I have to go by succulent soil today so I'm definitely picking up some coconut coir! I really hate using my regular soil mix for propagations because it's just so Rocky and all the perlite just comes up to the top of the tray so I will probably switch over to the complete 100% coconut coir mix! Another fabulous video as always ❤️

I loved this video. It gave me some great ideas-especially labeling the individual leaves! I noticed you used a ceramic pot with no drainage holes which appeared to be maybe four inches deep. I have always done my leaf propagations in plastic containers which are about one to two inches deep with several drilled drainage holes so I can bottom water and allow the excess water to drain away. Do you recommend that I should not drill the holes or that I use deeper containers? Using clear plastic containers allows me to know how much water is in the container, but without the holes I’m afraid it would increase the chance of too much water with no way to remove the excess. Your opinion would be greatly appreciated. If it helps, I live in Zone 8b in Georgia, USA. I have a lot of succulents/cacti in a 10’x12’ greenhouse as the temperature here can drop into the mid-20 degrees F occasionally during the night here during the Winter. I also have some, including babies and young, small ones indoors under 4’ grow lights. Summer can get from 95-102 degrees F sometimes with relatively high humidity. Thanks!

When it comes to propagating leaves, you can use both. Holes and no holes. Since I'm using coco peat, they dry up really quick on top. As I've explained in the video, this encourage the roots to go down into the water. This is less watering times compared to the ones with hole, more watering times. If I put too much water that it saturates or get to the top of the leaves or over the leaves(I'm exaggerating the scenario), I use a turkey baster to suck out the water to my desired level. You can know how much water is in it by lifting the pot. Happy growing.

Depending on the succulent, some will germinate fast and others will be slow. It can take from one month to sometimes one year for a leaf to produce babies depending on the species and variety. But all my leaf propagation(for ex., Echeveria, Graptoveria, Sedeveria) starts off by just leaving them on a tray with paper towel to absorb any moisture, and let them germinate on their own and grow roots. Once they have roots, that's the only time I plant them in the soil or coco peat and water as needed.

Hi, Liz :) I am amazed at how big your babies are after four months. I've been growing mine in coco coir for 2 months, and none are as big as my fingernail. I can't say they're unhealthy, just that they're rather puny. I fertilized once but it was low nitrogen. Do you think that's what they need...that they're not getting enough nutrients? Thanks much!

  • @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

    @GrowingSucculentswithLizK

They don't need much fertilizer Susan. Underwatering might be the problem and also if it's under the grow light, it grows much faster, coco peat dries quicker and have to water everyday.

I use just coco coir and nothing else for propagation but they need to be watered almost everyday or when the top layer dries up or when the pot feels light. Once the babies grow to a certain size, they need to be transplanted to a much healthier soil or they'll eat themselves away.

Do you put a liner on the bottom of the tray? And do you put pure coir? First on the box than onto the tray of coconut coir?

Maraming salamat!

Hi Patricia, I use decomposed granite and not crushed granite. If you can't get hold of decomposed granite, the crushed granite has to be sieved first to get rid of fine powder. Ideal fertilizer for succulent should have low "Nitrogen" for them to color nicely. This year during winter is when I propagated a lot of my succulents from leaves and also beheading/headchop. Happy propagating.

Hi Liz. Thanks for sharing. However i need to confirm for leaves propergating you only put 100% coco coir? For cuttings you mix with soils, perlite, coco coir mixing all together right????

For this video, air propagated plants with roots can be placed or grown in just straight coco peat/coco coir. Cuttings and other grown plants; all depends on what you want to achieve and also the situation you're in and also the species/variety of plant. I have a few videos on propagation so please take a look at my videos as different plants requires different soil mix or condition. My latest Layna Le Collection series (Part 1, 2 & 3) might also shed some light into your query.

Hello, do you water the plant right away soon as you finish? And how often do you water it?

In this case with the coconut coir and plants having roots, I water straight away and water when the top coconut coir/soil looks dry. From everyday to every second day depending on where I place the pot.

Liz, my props from leaves have stagnated growth. They all have pups but the leaves have not dried up and they dont seem to be doing ANYTHING. Just little pups with viable mother leaf for 3 mos now. What the heck do i do?

Sounds like they're ready to go into soil. If there's roots, you can water them but if no roots, just wet the soil halfway from the bottom and lay them on top of the soil to encourage them to reach into where there's water.

The tray is 2 inches deep but you can have deeper container so it can hold more moisture underneath for less watering times.

Sorry to hear that. Depending on the succulents; the ones with thin leaves are best grown from cuttings. Thick leaves are best left on their own without watering until they grow roots. Once roots shows, plant is coco peat or direct into soil mix and water when soil is dry. Hope this helps.

물론 일부 agavoides 품종을 제외하고는 잎에서 자라는 데 문제가없는 것 같아서 흥미 롭습니다. 파업에 오랜 시간이 걸릴 수 있습니다.
