Hi Debra. Loved this video. We have succulent iceplants (Disney iceplants, like they have all over Disneyland) growing down a large hillside area. We find them very hearty and we do walk on them or crab-walk on them to pull weeds out in between. They are VERY hearty. We always do the weeding in the early morning before they open up and before the bees visit the blooms!

Hi Debra. I live in the UK and really like the ice plant varieties. I have a few lampranthus and delosperma plants .also a begeranthus yellow. They are mostly in pots as I only have a small garden .I'm really enjoying growing them and I've got a few different types and colours. The most recent one I got is a drosanthemum micans which had really nice frosty ice like leafs that are amazing close up.cant wait to see everything in bloom. Would love it if you can do anything more about ice plants Soon on your site or KZread. Keep up the good work. 👍

They are the best flowering succulents, for sure. My experience with Lampranthus is that it starts looking unattractive after several years at which point it's better to pull it out and start over again with fresh cuttings. I made the mistake of planting Delosperma 'Firespinner' around smaller cacti. I had to remove the it because it was getting bigger than the cacti. The Delosperma grew to twice, nearly three times, the advertised maximum height! I opted for Ruschia nana, which does stay smaller (2-3" max height) and you can walk on it unlike any other ice plant. The downside is the flowers are rather small. Ice plants around cacti are helpful around xeric cacti in that they suck up any excess water.

I got some cuttings from a lampranthus deltoides when it wasn't in flower. I just liked the shape of the leaves and thought it would make a good addition to sprinkle around in my container garden. I can't remember what time of year that was, but what I do know is that last May, during the lockdown, I had an explosion of the tiny pink flowers. I was in heaven! I cut it back after it flowered and now have a couple of "bushes" of my own. Will it flower every year? I hope, I hope, I hope! The flowers and colors of this video are exquisite! Loved it!

As stated in the video, I show varieties suitable for mild-climate, California gardens: Lampranthus and Drosanthemum. For cold-hardy varieties (such as Delosperma), please see the Cold-Hardy page of my site. Size at maturity varies depending on cultivation, but most (as stated) are ground covers.

Hi Rianna -- Yes, go ahead. It'll take a while for newly planted ice plants to engulf other plants. Those you mentioned are annuals, so they'll be long gone before the ice plant takes over. Sounds like a lovely combo!
