Succession is at its core a portrait of power in the figure of media mogul and patriarch Logan Roy. After seasons of declaring he would never cede control of Waystar Royco, suddenly he’s selling it off under the kids’ noses, and seemingly relishing depriving them of the control he’s at various points promised them.

Thanks to everyone who commented about the correction re: Greg telling Gerri about the press conference rather than Shiv! Oops. We're removing that part since we got that wrong. That scene on the car ride home does still feel significant, though, because of the way Tom looks at Shiv and how what THINKS happened changes his idea of her. And looking back, his initial response to the Cruises scandal to (sort of) "do the right thing" says a lot about who he was when we first met him.

Even so, there's something pathetic about an eighty year old man feeling the need to yell "I beat you!" at his children. And even MORE pathetic is a "mother" who said in season 2 that she would never sell them out for a piece of real estate and then in the finale she did exactly that.

One thing I have noticed about this show, everything keeps coming back around. Right before Tom & Shiv walk down the aisle. Shiv had to pause before saying I love you to Tom. Now season 4, Shiv, I don't love you. Pretty sad all of the double talk & manipulation this family does but they learned from the best. Logan always tells them what they want to hear & the kids never stop to think about what might he be manipulating me into for example. Logan wanted Shiv to quit the Democrat's Presidential Campaign. What did he do, he dangled the Succession role in her face. Then he manipulated her out of the role & made her believe she screwed it up.

I still believe the first (and only) time kendall managed to really threaten Logan is in the family therapy ep. Notice that in other times kendall (and the other Roy sibs) try to confront him, he's very dismissive, throwing abundant fuck offs and what not. When kendall points how much he resents his own kids because they were born into the wealth he himself didnt have, logan immediately jumps to his face (and possibly would hit him had Marcia not been there), and you can see it even in kendall's smirk: he got him. "You're a fucking nobody" says Logan afterwards, because he needs to reestablish the hierarchy kendall dared to shake. At the same time, I think that as the seasons progress, he starts to see how ruthless kendall can be, and as much as it makes him proud, his narcissism can't have another person threatening what is his. And that's precisely because he knows what kendall's capable of that he is consistently trying to beat him down, digging up his traumas so he can have his tenacity and loyalty, but never threatening him or his authority. To logan, a good kendall is a good German shepherd - it protects its owner, but ultimately sleeps outside

He loves it and hates it all at the same time, because he cannot step off the wheel, until he falls down dead. And you cannot make a silk purse out of a pig's ear. And his children are pig's ears. They don't have his will to live, nor the intelligence, or courage to do what is necessary to be him. The fact that his dream of wealth and power had the seeds of its own destruction within from its birth is the realisation that is keeping him alive and fighting to his lonely and bitter end. He was born and lived for nothing else his whole life. He did what he set out to do, and he knows it is ultimately meaningless, because there will be no endpoint for him. He lives for and is kept alive by the process, not the result. He cannot sit back and rest on his laurels. Winning was everything he lived for, and his children haven't got that killer instinct. They can't even find the guts to walk away from him. One might say: 'why should they?' That's if you believe in individual potential. And perhaps that's our wishful nature, our need to believe that we are unique, and even the mediocre have value. They even might, but not in the world Logan excels in. I don't believe that Tom has a strong desire to be the alpha in the relationship. It always seemed like he wanted to join powers and he would be okay being equally powerful. But I don't think he is okay with Shiv being superior to him. Maybe he might have been, if Shiv wasn't bullying him at all times anyway and making him feel like an insignificant, disposable joke of a man. I think Tom's response of a slap in the face was even a little late, considering three seasons of not being taken into account and underestimated by Shiv and others. But he continued proving his loyalty to Logan and gained a huge advantage against the kids, who are basically wondering in the negatives in terms of loyalty to Logan. Tom slowly and carefully became the favorite, and I honestly always saw that coming considering how he wasn't born rich similar to Logan; and knowing what he has to lose makes him a more alert and smarter player, and a better successor than any of the children.

That would play into Logan's hands. He would prefer to pass empire on to blood. Logan would find some underhanded way to take custody of the child away from Shiv and give custody to Tom, his preferred protege who could then become the legitimate regent to Logan's (and Tom's) ultimate heir long after he has passed from the scene. Alternatively, look for Tom to find some way to manipulate or trick Shiv into giving up some of her eggs that he can then impregnate and have planted into a surrogate mother with Logan's backing.

Well their relationship was never healthy on both ends tho. We all know why Shiv was a shit person in the relationship, anyone can see that. But you all forget that Tom probably wouldn't be with Shiv if she wasn't who she was. Tom is an opportunist and a social climber. It's clear he wants in on the family's power and prestige and although he loves Shiv, he definitely uses that marriage to get closer to power. And even uses Logan's near death to propose to Shiv as to not face any added disapproval. Their relationship is unhealthy because the power imbalance and how Shiv constantly uses it at her disposal knowing Tom can do little about it, because guess what? Tom will continue to suck up and be abused because he lusts for their power. If you are always asking "what's in it for me" in terms of power position at your job in a relationship, it was never going to be healthy.

If anyone knows M&A and corporate governance rules and laws in the US, Logan ultimately did what he always could have done. If the finale is to be believed in full, this was always about Caroline and Logan making anything other was him fucking with their heads for three years. ***Also but too messy to go into every detail: Logan and Caroline's plan wouldn't stand in court. They effectively put themselves in a place where the three kids have grounds to sue their parents and the board of Waystar. A judge would put an injunction on the sale and they would be in litigation for years and hundreds of thousands if not millions in legal fees.

My question is, pursuant to US Law, is it possible that a requirement to have an approval in place for change of control is included/governed under a prenup? Because at least from where I come from, I have never seen a prenup with such provision, usually it’s Shareholders Agreement or Bylaw/article of association that governs such right. So, if Logan wants to amend such provision, at least other shareholders must be involved in the discussion not just caroline.

@@miniro9159 you’re fully correct. The problem with the change or amendment of the divorce settlement (not divorce) is that original directive was already executed and possession of the shares and votes were issued. On that alone a judge would object to the sale of Waystar. Now of a judge let’s them proceed, the board would have to get a vote on the amendment of the Trust’s bylaws. Only then could there be a vote to sell Waystar. Keep in mind, the kids have grounds for a lawsuit against their parent and the board of Waystar and that lawsuit could devalue Waystar (see Viacom). So no, although on paper this is possible of all obstacles are cleared but there is no way the kids would (or should) allow that. *****And most of all, it could never happen as quickly as we’ve seen on the show and never.. NEVER with just one agreemnt (amend to the divorce). I also question if one of those attorneys in that suit was Logan’s personal attorney because no Waystar lawyer could draft that amendment to his divorce agreement or help negotiate any changes to his divorce. That is a conflict of interest.

I mean, Tom ALSO betrayed Shiv because she: A) told him she wanted an open marriage on their wedding night! B) Seriously, and repeatedly, offered Tom up as a :logical decision" to save the company when Logan needed a "human sacrifice". C) Cheated on him. and D) Point-blank said to his face that she does not love him and knows that he will stay with her anyway. Not to say he's guiltless, of course, but his betrayal is much more than self-defense and power. I don't hate Shiv as much as everyone else online (it seems), as her defending Tom behind closed doors was very touching, and showed her true love for him (at the expense of her own brother), which makes the betrayal punch even harder -- but it's not like Tom acted solely out of selfish power-grabbing.

We see more of his height - towering over everyone bar Greg - and his suits get sharper, culminating in the beautiful white linen example in the final. For once he is not equivocal and says exactly what he thinks, regardless of the possible consequences of annoying Kendall.

im no editor but one small edit would be to reveal Tom first and then go back to Shiv saying "Who told him??" that way the suspense would remain as to why Tom is here but immediately we know why when Shiv says that.

As opposed to how they actually did it. Nothing won't that way either. But that way it gives audience some time, albeit short, to figure out it was Tom. It's super minor but would like to test.

As usual, awesome analysis. I've been binging this show for the past 3 weeks ad only finished it about an hour ago 😅 It'd be cool if you guys did a video dedicated to Roman. I remember that in a previous video about the season 2 finale, yall mentioned how the series would occasionally mention Roman metaphorically "f*cking his mom". Well that was amped to 1000 this season and I'm curious about your take on it

The editorial take on Tom “not being satisfied being the beta in a relationship” is brain dead lol.

Awesome recap of the Season. I agree with others that Season 4 will focus on Conner and Im not mad at that as long as Alexander Skarsgard comes back!

Except Conner’s character is boring and his girlfriend is worse. Every time they come on the screen I roll my eyes. If they highlight them they need to give them some depth instead of having them whine all the time.
