Suburban 4x10 to 6x9 Speaker Upgrade / Conversion

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I read about this upgrade for the rear roof speakers and wanted to try it. No adapters are required for this modification. The availability of quality 6x9's is much better than the 4x10's. It is a big improvement over the factory speakers. I highly recommend this upgrade. It will only take you about 2 hours to complete. It should be the same on all 95-99 Suburbans and Tahoe's. Good luck and get a new metal jigsaw blade to make your life a little easier.

    This is such a quirky bracket gm made. 2 bolts and just hangs on the other side. Do you have any issues with your speaker banging into the ceiling when you go over bumps?. I think I might try cutting the hole out of some mdf or plywood and screwing the wood into the speaker plate, then screw the speaker to the wood. Kind of as a spacer and also to close the small gap that will exist since the speaker was 10 inches long now it's 9 inches long. What do u think. Have u had any issues with the way you did this?

    Nice upgrade.. this can also be done with 6.5" round drivers , you would just mock up a thin 1/8" guage sheet metal over Lapping the original back plate " the one you took out , and then cut out your diameter for your 6.5 " speaker. Round speakers have better control and a wider range of buying options. I have a older suburban with custom work done for audio .

    Tony, get yourself a Chilton's or Haynes manual for your truck, they have the wiring diagrams. And since GM didn't make the wire colors intuitive, i.e. the brown is not the ground wire, I use the diagrams anytime I'm doing electrical in my 'Burban.

    I think you're the only other video showing how to ditch the stupid 4x10s in the GMT400 SUVs. I didn't go 6x9 initially because I felt there wasn't enough depth. I tend to use the Boom Mat baffles behind my speakers to both improve sound and protect the speakers from leaks. I went with two sets of 6 inch RF Punch speakers in each hole; this because in my 93 Suburban I did 4 4 inch Pioneers to replace the 4x10 and that fit. It gave good volume but no mid base. The 6in speakers in my 98 'Burban were only a moderate improvement. I recently changed it out to a set of RF Punch 6x9s. I like the sound quality way, way better. But because I wanted more depth I did surface mount the speakers.

  • @TheHandsOnChannel

    @TheHandsOnChannel

    Yeah it helped the sound a lot but It's still so far away from the driver in a burb. I may install a single punch 10'' under the rear seat in the future to improve the low range. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Check out my Car Audio playlist. I did a dual set of 6.75 in component speakers up front. That gives me a ton of mid base up front. I may build a new center console to hide a pair of 8s or 10s right between the front seats someday. The rear speakers are for my Boy who loves music when we drive. Sittin in the rear seat those 6x9s are right above his head.

    I have a 96 burb and also a 2005 z71 burb and on the 2005 they put a base speaker in between the 2 front seats. I actually like that sound pretty good where the speaker is.

    Great video - I have a question for you. When you bent your bracket mounting tabs in the vice, which way did you bend them? Did you bend them, so the speaker would be closer, or further away from the roof of the truck. Thank you

  • @TheHandsOnChannel

    Further away from the roof so the larger magnets would fit. Although I'm not sure it's necessary. Depends on the size/brand of speaker. Thank you for watching.

    @@TheHandsOnChannel Thanks, that's what I did. The hardest part of the job, was cutting out and trimming the brackets, so the speakers would fit. I also, like you had to remove the middle tab on the trim panel. Thank you for giving the wiring color code information, that really helped out. I finished the install today, looks great. Thank you again, for an excellent video. I also installed the same speakers as you. Sounds great. Regards, Richard Sacco
