Another reason I find these are so scary is because you have limited mobility under the water and you can’t get out of a scary situation as quick as you can on land and get to safety

Also the fact that you have know Where to go, the reason we run is to get to safety, but there ain't no safety to get too. It's what seems like an infinite abyss where whatever chases you will eventually get you. Hopelessness.

My brother is a diving welder. That means you go under water, under massive floating machinery or ships, and weld. One time, there was a kid going with him on the job because he wanted to be an underwater welder. He’d never really looked at footage of someone doing it, just illustrations of what they do. This would be the first time he’d see something like this. When he was explained how to stay safe under water and how to do simple diving to watch my brother do his job, they went under water. That day he was welding on a massive ship that was still under water. It was near the back propeller. When they went down, the kid came back up screaming after about half a minute. He had this fear but never really knew. My brother knew about the fobia, so he knew what was happening. It was pretty crazy.

I am affected by this phobia. I first learned when I was swimming in a lake when I was young and saw a sunken boat (not a bit boat, maybe 13 feet) right beneath me and it terrified me to the core. I remember panicking and swimming as fast and hard as I could away from it to get to the floating dock that was nearby. Ever since then I hate anything man made being underwater. Excellent video! Thank you for teaching me more about this condition.

I don’t think that picture you showed when talking about thallasophobia does it much justice. It’s not like we’re so much scared of what’s in the water, but what’s terrifying is the void that is the ocean. Looking down and just seeing how it gradually gets dark, with no bottom in sight. Good video!

Awesome video. A couple of ideas I've seen around that might help explain submechanophobia further: 1) When you see something threatening on land, you're well within your power to run and keep yourself safe, but in a body of water, the fact that the danger is coming from UNDER you and is not entirely visible when you may already be in a precarious position of having to tread water is absolutely horrifying. 2) There is something that feels so fundamentally wrong about seeing things that would otherwise have no business being underwater, underwater. It is a completely normal human reaction to look at a car underwater (for example) and feel as if something just isn't right. This might cause a sense of dread that people with submechanophobia might feel.

I'm afraid of being IN a manmade structure underwater Underwater caves are also absolute hell, but like. They've been around for a while, probably. Manmade things? They're not built to last down there. And might not be structurally sound ...And also, doors are made to close. (If there's something that's closed off in a natural underwater structure, chances are, it's been closed for a LONG time by the time you see it, youre not getting IN there in the first place.) (Anything manmade? Chances are, if there's an opening, that opening was made to be closed at some point. And I don't want to be on the wrong side of that, if I'm on limited air.)

I think I got it when I was about 8 years old. We were on vacation in Italy by a lake. When I walked into the water 10-15 meters in, the floor suddenly dropped straight down. I instantly sank under the water surface and when I wanted to swim back to the surface I saw this very big rusty overgrown pipe sticking out of the sudden drop of the seabed. I even touched it! I didn’t go into the lake ever again.

I still can't properly explain this phobia I have to my friends and family. They think I'm scared when I see a chain attacked to a block, a tire, barrel, or the support posts for a dock. Even the ladder used to get out of the water attached to the dock. I never know how to explain why it makes me freak out. One time I was swimming near some inflatable obstacle course rafts and I freaked out when I saw a chain attached to a block as an anchor. I started hyperventilating and swam back to shore as fast as I possibly could slashing my knee on a rock in the process. Another time when my family went diving near an abandoned mine, and the water was crystal clear, the support posts for the dock was too much to handle, even the bottom of the boat we were on too. To this day I still don't really know how to explain it, I find shipwrecks and stuff super cool, but I can not go near them, only see them in photos.

Like someone else on the comments said, manmade things underwater are not natural. For things like planes and ships specifically you know something very bad happened, and if it is even slightly inconvenient to access there are likely still bodies in it. Knowing that makes it feels like a grave and I should leave it alone. Not to mention how dangerous they are to be near or in, that adds more to it.

idk if this counts but me, my brother, my uncle and his gf went to some lake, it was a pretty big lake, anyways we went to this water park that was by the lake and there was like a party boat that had slides on it that lead to the lake (dont ask me why they were there idk) and one of them was called the kraken that had its front half in the water like it was sinking, the slide was disconnected and on the sea floor, well not sea, u know what im trying to say, anyways, it was docked too, if they didnt want it their (because it was good for nothing at that point) they would have moved it, or they had it for decoration, or just didnt feel like moving it. any ways, we were on our floaties 3 chair floaties and 2 pool noodles i used as floaties, we swam past the kraken (the name of the ship, not the actual kraken) and we chilled by this platform on the water (still close to land) we started heading back to explore so more and it was that moment i kept my legs above water and clinged to the floaty like gum on a shoe because i had seen the disconnected slide and it was clear as f-cking day too TL;DR: got scared sh-tless because i saw a disconnected slide below sea level at a lake

First time I realized I had this phobia was when I was swimming in my towns river and looked down and saw a big ass metal pipe.

Nothing scares me more then a plane or a ship sunken in the water, LAWWWD just thinking about it makes me want to puke

When I see these pictures I can’t help but imagine swimming above them, looking down and something forcibly pulling me down to them

I have this phobia. I find the ones that trigger it the most are when objects that are clearly not meant to be underwater, are under the water. Such as chairs, weird artistic statues, and sunken ships. It messes with the schema of things. It is unexpected and it just doesn't 'look right'.

I have the fobia but it branched from natural stuff for example. I used to go swimming down at a creek that had the murkist brown water ever, we went on 4 wheeler to get there which went over a cliff over looking the spot we swam. The cliff had alot of huge fallen over trees that were stuck upside down in the murky creek where we would swim(like huuuge trees). I believe I was 6 and my friends shoe came off and drifted to the very back of the creek that was right up against the cliff, in the shade, next to the sunken trees. I went to retrieve it, the water was colder and I never released how huge the trees were until i was right up against them, branches skimming my legs and I coudnt touch the bottom. I swam like crazy back and after that I never went down again- mostly because I found out alligators lived in my state.

Haha I used to be afraid of drains, grates and the water pumping holes at the side of pools for some reason. I guess I thought I would get sucked in or something. I was especially afraid of the large wave actuators at the deep end of the wave pools at water parks. Behind giant grates. I don’t really have this fear anymore but it was pretty real growing up.

I’m starting to warm up to pictures related to this fear, I think a lot of them are cool and interesting looking even though it does make my heart race a little. Though when I am actually there in the water with something I don’t like that’s when I’ll actually get scared but it’s on the inside mainly, aside from swimming fast. I’ll even be scared of natural objects such as rocks and logs. Example I went to a beach once and there was a big boulder on the sea floor, I couldn’t touch the floor either and whenever I was near it I kept hearing a high pitched filtering sound so yeah I was like nope lol. It was in an open space too, no other rocks or life around it so it was odd

I don't like being in water where I can't see it feel the bottom, and if there's even a normal boat nearby I can't do it. I always feel like I'll get sucked up or something.

its only the deep down dark abandoned boats and planes and shit that bothers me. the humongous propellers nd shit and it takes so long to get away while youre in water. that pic of the cockpit of the airliner in the ocean is creepy as fuck, that and the propellers

Really only makes my scared when it’s dark lake water with man made thing such as buoy chains, drains, dams, and random pipes that are body size in width. These only become visual really close up to it or by feeling it on your body without seeing it. Makes me fight or flight.

Honestly my relation to fear like this: I do not wish to be ignorant, I do not ignore my fears, however I do tend to distract myself until I have the time to deal with them and because of this I will always have something creepy when I least expect it. Somehow this doesn’t hurt my psyche that much as I can, most of the times, eventually deal with my fears by confronting them… I feel blessed to have those capabilities that maybe I acquired sometimes ago
