It's been 11 months since I've been on this video. I work over night at a Call Center and I bring extra head phones and I listen to the submarine in between phone calls....like I'm in the submarine, buried underwater, just sleeping in the submarine while it does its run. . SO relaxing. I LOVE it Brad

I wish this was ten hours. It's the best submarine sound video I've heard. The sound isn't static; it rises and dips, changes pitch and tone, and the occasional ping of hunting destroyers is relaxing rather than unnerving- they can't find us with our Alberich coating!

What I visualize while this is playing in my room with a surround sound system and the lights are off is I have just been pulled from the waters after floating in a life raft for a day or so but the captain has seen to it that I use her room rest and recuperate which is why I am in a comfortable bed and not a hot rack as my brother who used to be in the Navy called it. As I lay there I here the crew sound off commands as the sub begins to disappear beneath the waves....Dive, Dive, Dive and the light ping is sounded to echo locate any possible obstacles as the sub sinks deeper then there are 2 low thuds as if something , maybe a passing whale bumping the sub or is it the crushing depths making the hull pop as the pressure grows....the ping continues and the low sound of the sub moving through water settles my nerves and with the continuing light ping I fall asleep..... Thank you Brad

Not bad with one exception. Submarines rarely use active sonar, they rely on passive sonar. Using active sonar means a potential enemy can detect you twice as far away as you can detect him. Too bad Hollywood thinks passively listening to the ocean is boring and always presents sonar as active (sending sound into the water to listen for the echo). There is a myriad of sounds to hear in the ocean, ships, fish, mammals, seismic activity, weather, other ships, waves crashing on the shore and so much more.

Can't figure out the pinging. surely as it becomes fainter it should also become less frequent (the object it's pinging off is becoming further and further away)? this kept me awake.. i FF to 45 mins and think the pinging has gone, but then at 1 hour it starts again and becomes louder and louder. for me that's a shame as i like the 'brown noise' behind it.

This is really nice, this is perfect background sounds for when I just want to relax. My only real issue with the video is that I would have preferred the background picture to be an interior of a submarine. But that is about it. Keep up the good work mate.

JFC- maybe try this again without the general quarters and collision alarms? Those are things no USN submariner--or sailor in general--will sleep through.

After spending years on a boomer decades ago, I still can't vouch for the accuracy of this audio. I know sonar doesn't ping, though. Most of what I remember is the smell.

Awesome. One bit of criticism though. Subs don't constantly run active Sonar, so you wouldn't hear that ping you always hear in movies. Still reminded me of my time on the boat though. Thanks

During WWII a few British subs were painted with a colour-changing paint. It involved a simple chemical reaction, which I cannot remember, but perhaps if you search the PTOV (Periodic Table of Videos') YT channel, you might find it. Under the surface, they were, as designed, very dark, yet when brushed with a chemical on the surface they became light gray. I don't think the experiment was successful, as it required the submariners to repaint their sub when it surfaced, and did not become the norm.

It’s usually because the anechoic tiles that cover the outer skin of the boat are almost always black.
