Learn more about the music:
Kushal Das is equally adept on the sitar and its larger ancestor, the surbahar. His learning started in the family, a varied group of Maihar gharana musicians. His grandfather played the esraj, his uncle trained under sarod great Ali Akbar Khan, and his father was a sitarist who received instruction from Ravi Shankar. But his training was atypical in some ways - his family never pressured him to take up classical music, letting him play through film songs to acquaint himself with the techniques. However he soon realised his calling, and worked hard to capture the nuances of his idols - Vilayat Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, and Ravi Shankar. Kushal uses a first-hand understanding of vocal music to expand the mellifluous phrasings of his string playing, bending patiently around both his instruments in a gharana-blending style. Born to a biochemist father in the extraordinarily musical village of Rudrapatna, Shashank Subramanium started learning early in life. He mastered all 72 Melakarta scales by the age of two-and-a-half, prompting a research team to study his prodigious talent. His first musical immersions were with singing and violin, but he fell in love with the venu flute as soon as he picked it up, focusing on it from that point onwards.
Initially he taught himself, but soon entered the gurukul as a student of legendary flute maestro T.R. Mahalingam. His guru insisted that he should continue his vocal training, and avoid listening to other top masters of the day in order to develop his own style. The approach worked, and his tireless study led to the creation of new gamakas and other melodic techniques. He has incorporated overblowing and novel hand positions, and has learnt Hindustani music in-depth too. In the past decade he has worked with artists including Paco de Lucia, Terry Riley, and Remember Shakti, and is recognised as the finest venu exponent alive today. Hear more of Shashank here:

Such a hard combination of a wind instrument and a stringed one pulled off so well! Percussionists, equally impressive! Though the mridangam was slightly off tune, his skill more than compensates for the same. Love from India!

Not sure why you said the mridangam was off tune, as it isn't. Vidhwan Patri's mridangam sounds pretty much old school with valanthalai, the right side as we call it in TN, making the closest sound to the metallic buzz of a mridangam with sides tied with Vaar/ leather. It is perfectly chosen for base flutes 1, 2, 3.
