Sublime - Badfish | Reaction!

With the 28th anniversary of Bradley Nowell's death, I wanted to finally react to one of Sublime's songs. Their music could sound so upbeat and chill, but you'd never know just how dark their lyrics were. This was already a heavy track, but it packs even more of a punch because of Nowell's early death. A couple of the lines are just so poignant. It's a 3-minute song that I somehow made a 16-minute video out of ffs!
Thanks for watching!

This was always my favorite sublime song back in the 90s. Love the Smile poster!

My Dad's ashes are in the mausoleum right by Bradley's grave. I always visit both of them when I am there. Great reaction, Nick.

Back in the 90's I used to work sound in local bars. I worked a show once when Sublime came to town. This was shortly before their big hit. It wasn't a good time at all. I won't go into details here, but the demons were out in force that evening. Anyway, their false laidbackness (is that a word?) always kind of threw me. I guess seeing behind the curtain for real didn't help that outlook, but it had been there before. There always just seemed to be something off about the good times sounds. Don't get me wrong they had good songs, their breakthrough album was pretty good (Santeria being my favorite from that one).

The same generation that will tell you that The Beatles and Nirvana are overrated will also tell you that Sublime was a one-hit wonder that played superficial good-time music. None of it is true. Sublime has songs you can listen to 3 times and be singing along to every word on the 4th, but that simplicity isnt a bad thing or a sign of a lack of talent. Even though you CAN understand the words easily and sing along to simple choruses, it is the musicianship that stands out...they really can play their instruments well! The bass in Badfish stands out quite a bit, but that bass is in most of Sublime's tracks...Bud's drumming has a signature snare sound and Brad's guitar could go from acoustic/beautiful to electric/rockin in the space of 1 song/1 beer. The samples are as good as any album(s) since Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" and they play a ton of covers of interesting and historically worthwhile bands. The average mid 90s kid that bought Sublime albums would also get a crash course in Minutemen, Bad Religion, Eazy E, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Descendants, The Doors, The Specials and many MANY more. What they did recalls a band more like Beastie Boys than a band like Smashmouth (no disrespect)....but younger generations have forgotten that and/or were never taught.
