When I was doing sublimation printing, I had a Sawgrass. That thing was a unstoppable tank; it printed thousands upon thousands of transfers, flawlessly, and ran for years on end with zero fuss. It never broke down until I unknowingly dropped some plastic into the print feeder... and it tore the track. It was quite a machine, if I ever get back into sublimation, I would definitely go with a Sawgrass, no ifs ands or buts. And while the inks were a lot more expensive, quality color and quality was guaranteed; failed print transfers with bad color were very rare.

I must have received a defective sawgrass then, cause absolutely every setting I try press faded colors. On mugs, ornaments, tumblers. I have contacted support and they have not been helpful so far. A lot of wasted blanks later I’m at my wit’s end and about to return this printer and get another epson with cosmos ink. My old one printed the most vivid and clear images. Sawgrass has so far been a huge disappointment.

If I were to buy en Epson printer..use the sublimation ink and then later on wanted to use regular ink for "regular" printing not for sublimation...could I still do it? Or is it basically "done" once I converted it?

Thanks for this video. I have another couple of points that may make a difference. Space and frequency of use. I have an inkjet and a mono laser for foiling and I'm in a small one bedroom flat. I was advised in a group to go for the Sawgrass and I probably would have until I checked out the dimensions! There is absolutely no way I could fit that into my flat and then I thought I needed a huge press too! So I was quite disappointed when I came to the decision that I'd need to just create my designs and have the printed and pressed for me. But then a guy told me about the xp3105 and the xp4105 that have a chipless firmware available that could remove the issues with using fillable cartridges, are so cheap for my first go at this and are just so much smaller. I'm going with one of them and will try to clean it out with a second set of cartridges with cleaner fluid once I've finished with it after a few days and then store it away for the next few weeks or months so that I don't need to worry about the printer head becoming clogged before I want to use it again. And now I've seen that I could use the Cricut EasyPress 2 so now I'm very excited to have a go at sublimation myself after all!

I bought an epson wf7720 because It would print large format but I’ve had it for 2 years now and it’s been a headache the whole time! I’m currently think of ordering a sawgrass sg500 here soon!

I have an Epson 2720 but it stopped printing colors. It only prints yellow. I don’t know what to do. Maybe I need a sawgrass? 🤔

Hey Lisa, you technically can, but I wouldn't recommend trying to use one printer for both purposes. If you try to switch back and forth from "regular" ink to sublimation ink, you will have a lot of ink waste on both sides. If you print regular documents with sublimation ink, they will just look very faded and the colors will not be accurate. Hope this helps! ---Becky

Only been researching sublimation printers for a week. Had decided on sawgrass because of the software but for the past few hours I have seen nothing but bad reviews with regards to the recent update of their software so now I’m back to square one. Hey Leanne! Yes, it is definitely a hard decision to make. If your heart is set on a Sawgrass, you can actually still print from Silhouette Studio using their print manager, bypassing using their Creative Studio software. Hope this helps! ---Becky

Hey Angela, is this the wide format Epson Ecotank? If so, from what I understand, you just empty the regular ink from the bottles and fill with sublimation ink. Agreed! I don't have one to show you, but when I taught a Sublimation event, we did just this and the Epson was actually brighter. BUT, my Sawgrass friend then contacted her Sawgrass dealer and they were able to adjust her colors, and we didn't get a chance to re-compare. I get good colors with Epson, but I know some others haven't been as lucky and have to work at it to get it just right. Hope this helps! ---Becky

i have been running a ricoh 7100dn a3 for 10 years it takes a little more setting up as it was pre creative studio but sawgarss/ricoh printers are builtproof, user friendly and personally was the best investments i ever made ! i ran epsons with a bypass tank before the ricoh was defiantly long before ecotanks :/

Hey Heather! In my very humble opinion, not really. They are completely separate. The part that holds Cricut users back from using Design Space in Sublimation is that you have a limited print area. Now, I've heard of Cricut users who "print" their images using a PDF printer and then printing that image from a different program (that way you can still design in Cricut Design Space). I'm working on some more videos that will help explain this process better. Let me know what other questions you have! ---Becky

HI! I have watched several of your videos and have found them useful but I am still really new to all of this. I currently have a Silhouette machine and a heat press. I have just been buying sublimation and screen prints from various websites. I want to be able to find pictures (on pinterest or other) and print them off to make shirts. What do I need to do that? I was thinking a sublimation printer. It that correct? I also have been researching sublimation printers and want one that prints bigger than 8.5 x 11 to fit on size large and above shirts. What do you recommend?

Hi hoping you can clear something up for me...I'm new to this so I'm still doing my research, my question is you hear about not being able to print white. the logic of that is obvious to me ( you don't have white ink and the 4 colours that you do have can not be blended to produce white) Is it really that simple or is there something more to it?. Every video that I see about printers seems to bring this point up so I was thinking that there might be something more to it...so when I see some T-shirt with white lettering or graphics does that mean that it's either screen printed or vinyl? Epson F570 is a sublimation printer. Prints 24" wide. I have sawgrass sg400. I pay Ink $340 plus another $36 for waste tank. And sawgrass must stay on for it's maintenance schedule. I'm purchasing an Epson F570.

Which has the better black ink? I have the SG500 and tried to also convert the Epson 7720 and let me tell you the converted Epson is no where near the quality of the Sawgrass. The blacks on the SAwgrass are super deep and very very black.

In my opinion and experience the color of blank ink depends more on the brand of ink and sub paper used. I have a epson 15000 use cosmos ink and crafting besties sub paper - great results.

Hey there! So I don't know about this specific printer. Upon my initial look, it says it has 5 ink colors? Most sublimation ink suppliers seem to offer 4 and 6 color options. That may be why you are unable to find more information on it. The only thing that gives me hope is that one of your "colors" is called photo black. So my question would be, can you load your "regular black" and your "photo black" with black sublimation ink? I just don't know enough about it, to be honest. Hey, so I did a quick Google search and I was totally wrong, there ARE vendors who supply 5-color sublimation ink bundles. The Sawgrass has a self-maintaining feature. So if you were to not print weekly it does its maintenance by itself. :)

Only concern I have with the self maintenance is that is uses up lots of ink over time. I hear it can eat up 1/3 of your ink and with Sawgrass ink now costing over $300 on Amazon, that is an expensive loss. Hey Janell! I have used both InkXPro and Cosmos Ink from Amazon and have good results with both. The Cosmos Ink is in the 15000, they have bottles designed for the ecotank printers that make it super easy. Hope this helps! ---Becky

Hey, great question! From what I understand, there are a few Epson sublimation printers that are just known to have problems when converted for sublimation, which is what makes the 7710 and 7720 so popular. If given a choice, I would try to set up an EcoTank model, the 7710 and 7720 are being discontinued and replaced from what I understand, and the refillable cartridges haven't been fully developed and tested for the new replacement models. Wish I had more help choosing a model, I would join the Epson Sublimation group on Facebook and use the search bar, you can search the model number and see what people are saying about that model. Hey Vanessa, yes, that is absolutely true. You can usually perform maintenance and it will be back to normal, but I try to print every few days, even something small. I know a lot of printers will keep a "purge file" of just a square of each color to print on regular copy paper. Hope this helps! ---Becky

Hey Jacki, it won't take any more space than a regular printer with the print drivers. You do install the Print Manager application, but I haven't noticed any difference in running my computer, even with multiple programs running at once. Hey Wilbeth, the computer does matter for sure, but mainly just in regards to what type of designing software you want to use. Truthfully as long as you have a computer/table that will print designs, you will be fine in the beginning, and you can upgrade your computer later on if you decide to start designing on your own. And what mark of printable vinyl textile, i can buy?

I was told epson can’t print on other fabrics besides white polyester shirts. As SG can use white & black polyester & cotton shirts

I called and spoke with support at Epsom and asked if I put sublimation ink in my Epsom would if void the warranty. Their reply was "yes, because they aren't meant to run with sublimation ink." Ahh. I'm so upset about that.

Hi! I've been reading that you should settle for using only one brand of ink. Do you have a video on that? Can you recommend good brands? Thank you!

Hey Stever! This is mostly true, unless you have a reason to switch inks. You can technically buy new cartridges, but that would be an added expense. I use InkXPro from Amazon and have heard good thinks about Cosmos Ink also. Hope this helps! ---Becky

I'm looking to buy the Epson Ecotank L3250 but my question is do I need to change the ink to ecosolvent ink? And is that printer okay enough for starters? Your reply would be greatly appreciated.

How about the ECO-TANK printer my Epson? Can it be used and would you purchase the Ecotank over Workforce Epson?

Hey Veronica, the Sawgrass does have a few drawbacks, but the price is the determining factor for most. While there are a few lemons (with any machine), most Sawgrass users experience a pretty plug-and-play setup with few drawbacks. Hope this helps! ---Becky

Right!?!??! About the time I lean to go one way I read a comment that makes me second guess my decision. When I was researching between cricut and silhouette I had the same back and fourth. I went with the silhouette and am beyond happy that I did. I am leaning heavily towards the Sawgrass. The reliability and customer service sounds worth the investment to me.

Sawgrass has changed their format. My friends have done nothing but complain about the issues with the new version. Good luck trying to get help with problems

Hey Karen, unfortunately you cannot sublimate white ink. You will need to look at vinyl, screen prints or possibly a white toner printer. Hope this helps! ---Becky

I have added this to my list, but I have to find an Epson first LOL. They are all out of stock at my favorite haunts. I have not personally used an ecotank yet, but that will be my next purchase, I have heard wonderful things about switching over to the ecotanks. A larger format printer was more important at the time that I made my purchase (a large format ecotank at that time was around $600 refurbished), but I will probably purchase a small ecotank for when I just need quick small prints. If you purchase one before me, let me know what you think! ---Becky

I have both. I have a Sawgrass and an Epson. Guess which one I’m selling? My Epson. I’m tired of troubleshooting issues. I prefer being able to just roll and craft.

The ink for a sawgrass is expensive. And if you buy ink off the internet that the vendor says it works in a sawgrass, you will no longer be able to get support from Sawgrass. I have a Ricoh 7100 that works fine, but I don't print enough to justify the cost of the inks. Thanks for the video!

Absolutely correct Alison. Another thing I didn't touch on is that if you own a Sawgrass and are printing from Creative Studio, if you install 3rd party inks, Creative Studio will watermark the printed images. I don't own a Sawgrass to test this, but it was an update that happened a few years ago. You can still print from other software, just not the combination of 3rd party ink and Creative Studio together. Thanks for sharing your experience! ---Becky

Quite the conundrum Melissa! I use the Epson WF-7710, but the 7720 is just as popular. If your budget can stretch a little, you can opt for one of the Ecotank printers, they are very good also. Hope this helps! ---Becky

Yikes.. for $2500 that's allot of printer

the sawgrass-sg500-sublimation-printer-sublijet-uhd-package is $499 and the Epson is about ET -2700 series is about $200 plus you have to purchase the sublimation ink. That is not a 1/10th price difference. You may have scared off a few people with that statement. For double the price I would take the longevity

Hey Meesha! Great information. The SG500 only prints up to legal size sheets (8.5" x 14") is around $500, but if you want wide format (which is what I recommend) you need the SG1000 for around $1600. The Epson WF-7710 can be purchased for around $150 and also prints wide format, so that is where the 1/10th of the price comparison comes from. A lot of crafters opt for the wide-format because legal size sheets aren't large enough for many projects. Hope this clarifies my comparison. ---Becky

Sawgrass ink in insanely expensive 350.00 whereas you can get really great quality ink for an epson echo tank 15000 for about 45.00

@@MeeshaMillz i bought Sawgrass Printer is pretty cool but the ink is expensive about$75 each but once my warranty end I'm going to get a cheaper Ink around $65 for all of them, the only problem is the you wont get assistant from Sawgrass CO anymore because the new ink

Hey Lauren! I'll be honest, I'm really not sure and so many of the Epson models are out of stock due to high demand. I would start with the Epson website (to see all the models available) and see what you can find available to purchase, then see if you can find refillable ink cartridges to fit. OMG Regret buying an epson i'm gonna buy saw gras for sure

I owned one ricoh and 1 sawgrass and both only lasted 2 years. The sawgrass upgrade is TERRIBLE. I am changing to an Epson for sublimation not converted. I do not recommend sawgrass AT ALL. Inks are expensive also.

If you are new, i suggest not to make a mistake as I did with choosing a sawgarss printer. The most expensive sublimation printer i guess. Full CMYK ink costs around 360$ for sawgrass. For epson its around 25$... If u are new, u gotta make some mistakes - its normal. The printer must be ALWAYS ON, coz its automaticaly cleaning heads and wasting the ink. Sometimes you need to do some test prints - so u waste ink. Sometimes its not workin proppely, so u have to clean heads FEW times. If your black isnt good, u gotta clean two colors at once. SO.... If you are new, choose epson, which is the printer im gonna buy after i sell sawgrass...

@@sem0086 as suggested by sublimation printer resellers - u have to do at least one print every 2-3 days to prevent drying. Sawgrass is automaticaly "cleaning". Since inks for epson sublimation printer is so cheap, I suggest you to do at least one random print every day.
