SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT (Rules):- > Subject(Singular):- Verb(Singular) > Subject(Plural):- Verb(Plural) > Noun+s/es = Plural {Exception:- I and You} > Verb+s/es = Singular > Subject(He,She,It) = Verb(Singular) > Subject(We,they) = Verb(Plural) > Subject(You) = Verb(Plural) > Subject(I) = Except:- Am and was, Verb(Plural) 15 GOLDEN RULES OF SUBJECT-VERB AGREEMENT:- *Compound Sentences (Two subjects in the same sentence)* > When two subjects are joined by 'and'= Verb (Plural) > When two subjects joined by 'and' refer to the same person or thing as a whole= Verb (Singular) *Eg:- The actor and producer is arriving soon (refering to the same person)* > If the subjects are both singular and are joined by the words "or", "nor", "either...or", "neither...nor", or "not only.....but also", = Verb (Singular) > If the subjects are both plural and are joined by the words "or", "nor", "either...or", "neither...nor", or "not only.....but also", = Verb (Plural) > If one subject is plural and the other is singular and they are joined by the words "or", "nor", "either...or", "neither...nor", or "not only.....but also", = Verb (according to the subject that is nearest to the verb) > Subject(Uncountable)= Verb(Singular) > If a prepositional phrase comes between the subject and the verb, use the verb according to the subject. *Eg:- The colors of the rainbow are beautiful.* Here, 'of' is the preposition So, from "of to the rainbow" is a prepositional phrase and the subject is "the colors" > Singular (Indefinite pronouns) = Verbs (Singular) Singular Indefinite pronouns:- Everyone, Each, Somebody, Something, Anybody > Plural (Indefinite pronouns) = Verbs(Plural) Plural Indefinite pronouns:- Both, Many, Few and Several > Some indefinite pronouns take a *singular verb* when referring to *an uncountable subject* and some take a *plural verb* when referring to *a countable subject* Example:- Here is some water. Here are some biscuits. *Inverted Subjects:-* When subject comes after the verb > If the sentence starts with "There" or "Here," the subject will always be placed after the verb. The words "there" and "here" are never subjects. Examples:- There is a problem with the remote. Here are the books you asked for. *Collective nouns can be Singular or Plural depending upon the meaning* > If collective noun is used as a singular unit, use a singular verb. Example:- The committee meets here every Thursday. The majority rules most of the time. > If collective noun is used as individual members within a singular unit, use a plural verb. Examples:- The audience were clapping (The people in the audience) > If gerunds (+ing) or infinitives (to+base form of verb) are used as the subject, use a singular verb. However, when they are joined by "and," use a plural verb. Example:- Reading is great skill. Reading and writing are great skills. To swim is a great workout. To swim and to run are great workouts. Ma'am I have a doubt as I have taught bread and butter is taken as singular and we generally use singular verb for them, so is there any exception case for this or it is depends on the sentence that a verb will be singular or plural
