I tried informing the two Subaru dealers within an hour of me that there is an alternative to ecm replacement. The service managers wouldn’t let explain the method.

What model and year is your vehicle and what scanner did you use? I couldn't get mine into Test mode because it didn't have the option. Mine is 2011 Forester w/FB25. Im glad you got yours fixed.

What coding tools could be used to reset the values on an early model brz/frs for clearing a p0018. I have an autel maxis elite 2 that I used at my shop and access to ecutek tuning software.

Unfortunately, the BRZ/FRS requires specialized tools to read the emulated eeprom from the ECM and then manually, edit the values before writing it back.

Thinkdiag+ software and Autel MaxiDAS DS808S is not capable of thiis procedure on my 2011 Forester X. It will not erase the permanent P0018 (fyi with engine running Left Intake VVT angle is 18 degres) because it does not have Test Mode. What it does have is " Dealer Inspection Mode" which has a different function. Also in live data mode it does not have VVT initial position learning values section. Are these scanners not capable or is the ECM program of my vehicle is not set up for Test Mode as newer cars? Please help and I thank you Practical Mechanic for the vids.

I wonder if it will work if you manually select the wrong vehicle. Perhaps a couple years newer. I haven’t run into a vehicle that is listed on the TSB I couldn’t reset except the BRZ. I have not had one that early in the bay that needed a reset. Some of the early vehicles did not have learning value display until after a reflash and some never got the data. Page 14 of the TSB gives instruction for testing. One step is to unplug vvt solenoids and start engine while monitoring actual vvt position within the first 10 seconds after start up. If the value is +\-10 then change the solenoid and recheck. If it’s more than 10 degrees inspect the timing chain. You can swap solenoids left to right and see if the problem moves to the other bank as well.

@@ThePracticalMechanic Thanks for replying. Yes I tried selecting newer years and even different regions. I've already bought two OCV solenoid and installed one on the driver side. That was my first try at it. Might install the passenger as well to see a miracle. Also did read page 14 but I already returned the scan tools as it did not have test mode as an option. Do you think the Autel 906ts will have this test mode? I might get that next but its expensive. A little background I just rebuilt this engine and during engine prime the Vvt sprockets would not lock (they kept clicking) due to no oil pressure. I couldn't get oil light to go off. After many attemps I started the engine and the sprockets finally locked. I dont want to disassemble engine just yet but wanted to do your procedure first to determine if the culprit is the Vvt learned values. It seems like manufacturers are designing newer vehicles as extortion machines. What a world we live in.

Brz cannot be done with scantool as far as I know. I do t have access to one for testing so I cannot confirm. I think the brz/FRS need to have the eeprom manually edited.

As stated 2011 Forester does not provide the learned values, and does not have the fuse location but does have the green check connector. Autel ms906bt does have dealer mode. would this work to reset values? looking for help with this p0018

A few have mentioned they didn’t have the function available for check mode. If your scan tool has it available on that year I would try the procedure and see if it clears it. Did you have a mechanical issue before? Timing chain or avcs solenoid issue?

We put a low mileage used engine in it (40k) and we have this ghost p0018. The car has the green check connector, and my Autel ms906bt does not show learned values in the data. Can you do a video on reset for these models? can I email you direct or even better call? thanks@@ThePracticalMechanic

I have the same MS906TS scan tool with the Subaru v8.1 update, but Test Mode Change does not appear in the menu after Special Functions- only Dealer Inspection Mode. Is there a step I’m missing? I have tried reading the ECM with the inspection fuse both installed and removed.

What year and model is your car? Someone else was missing the function on a 2011 forester. I don’t have one available for testing but I’m wondering if you could select a year or two newer and get the function.

This method doesn’t change the flash programming so you should be fine. I have never run into one with the AP installed so I cannot confirm.

Can confirm this does work on cars that have been flashed with a Cobb AP and a tune. I reset my ‘21 WRX this way using a Launch x431 tool (Thinkdiag2 also appears to have the ability as well for cheaper based on other comments)
