Subaru Rear-Wheel vs All-Wheel Drive on Snow and Ice

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How does driving technique differ between rear-wheel drive Subaru BRZ (RWD) and all-wheel drive WRX STI (AWD) on a frozen lake? Learn how as we drive a snow tire equipped 2019 Subaru WRX STI and 2019 Subaru BRZ to see how AWD in the snow and ice differs from RWD.
Joining us is professional rally driver Patrik Sandell of the Subaru Rally Team to get some tips and compare differences in driving technique for the best performance in slippery conditions.

You have the perfect car (sti) for winter driving. I can honestly say that, having owned Audis (s4, s3). I am driving my 4th sti nowadays (06-09-15-19), there is simply nothing south of 90,000$can that can beat this (rich rally heritage, great STI brotherhood, fun, manual, powerful, balanced, seats 5, big trunk, can hold 4 bikes on top, …) the only thing missing is an adjustable damping system . It could be manually or electronically controlled.

Ahh, the Northwoods. Probably THE budget snowmobile/winter car playground if you can't afford CO or WA. Scandy guy must've felt right at home there. Especially considering there's a lot of norgy borgy heritage in the beautiful Badger State. Tell him to go to Al Johnson's next time he visits us, nothing more WI than a restaurant with goats eating grass on the roof. P.S. RWD is my choice for winter. You're not getting much traction in the first place, so why not go all out? Otherwise, FWD is the go-to for "I need to get groceries safely" duties. I would get AWD if I wasn't a massive cheapskate (plus most crossovers AWD systems SUCK all of the testes).

I grew up with rear wheel drive. The first family car I drove was a ‘62 Buick Invicta station wagon. I lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan which gets some nice snow. We never had snow tires on it. Later years I drove front wheel drive. Never had all wheel drive. I did and do have selectable four wheel drive pickup trucks. I never had studded tires. Used chains. I have had chains on all four tires. It would be fun to test all types on that course.

Not fair. I can't have 400 studs per tire. Without that it won't be close. Two different worlds. Flat out Hoonigan driving on a safe course with few consequences. Rwd Mountain driving with a cliff on one side and a rock wall on the other. Awd Best of both worlds, selectable awd or rwd. Beautiful snow track. Can we all play? Even awd needs a yank out if you stuff it in the snowbank.

I’m sure there are a lot of Subaru owners here but I believe rwd has more control than awd as far as make adjustments mid drift. and as far as which is faster awd has an obvious advantage accelerating in slippery conditions however rwd doesn’t over use the front wheels so less understeer into and through a corner, therefore it’s easier to maintain speed while turning and is faster as long as accelerating out of a turn isn’t traction limited.

I prefer rear wheel drive. Like Patrick said with longer wheel studs and traction control, more traction means faster speeds but not necessarily more fun. I feel that applies to driven wheels as well. It also helps teach the driver how to more fully control the car.
