Subaru Legacy - Front Brakes & Wheel Speed Sensor Problem
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is the Subaru that we replaced the rear wheel bearings on in this video • Removing A Stuck Subar... and it is also the one we looked at for an intermittent speed sensor issue in this video • If it isn't broke...it... . Well now it is back and the lady wants the front brakes fixed and we need to revisit the speed sensor issue because she is still having problems with it! I think we'll get it handled this time around though.
-Enjoy!

Holy cow..... I haven't seen a GULF hat like that since I was a kid. It was the hat I wore at my 1st job pumping gas(at 12 yo). Good times even if it was a billion years ago. :)
I worked on an older Nissan Xterra with a spongy pedal for a friend recently. He had it to some shop where they bled everything out, which did nothing, then told him it needed a replacement master cylinder with a larger bore (?) and a matching booster (??) at a cost of $1200, at which point they would "evaluate" the ABS system (???) as the next step. I looked at it for him. It wound up having a bunch of slider pins frozen and unevenly worn pads. New pads, rotors and caliper pins and the pedal is back where it belongs. It's hard to find a reliable shop.
You have to love return customers!! They trust you Mr. O !!

Her husband might have inadvertently stretched the speed sensor wire when he replaced the CV axle like I did. From the outside the wire looks normal, but I got a error symbol on the dash afterwards concerning the (anti-lock) braking system. I also had to drill out the sensor on the other side because it was frozen in the knuckle. Thanks for all of the fine little detail tips you gave us in the video. Those "little" details can make all the difference & save us some frustration (& time & money) down the line.

You've got a lot of binge watching to do (to catch up)....
It is much more fun to watch you struggle with rust than do it myself.
I had a bad magnetic ring on my wife's Cruze. I changed out the sensor and it reset the computer code itself. It got a code again first time out. She had to be going fast in order for the code to come on. I changed out the hub and as I was taking the old one out, the magnetic ring came apart and fell off. So I guess the moral of the story is that when you do the repair test the car as it will be driven through all conditions. Slow, fast, braking, accelerating and such. Thanks for another fine vid. I learn something every time.
That was a once in a career occurrence. Seeing an intermittent failure on the camera.
Mrs O is trying to get herself fired. Failing miserably 😂
Learning something useful every time (almost)! Today - the venturi effect made good use of when blowing debri away from a hole you want as clean as possible. Thank you mister.
Mrs O, I like your style! "You're late." "Should I go home, then?" You are the only internet personality that puts Mr. O in his place! 👍

that lawnmower LMAO. Every time.
Glad to have been here to share your special moment with you! Thanks for the videos as always.
Speed sensor circuit code is always a open in the circuit, air gap rust was a big swing for the fence by the great Babe, good to see it was a intermittent open, but the switch is the best possible next step in the diagnostic flow tree

Vanessa is looking fantastic as always. Lucky you caught that left front sensor acting up. Sensors are the most common cause of ABS problems but not on my 2009 Mercedes C200 (it was the magnetic pickup ring that had delaminated). I use the "Don't call me late for dinner" joke too.
@snoopdogie187
Жыл бұрын
ABS can be a pain when it wants. I fixed one that the magnetic fell apart, and the only fix was to replace the cv axle. I have a GM that only likes to act up at about 7 mph, below that is fine, above that is fine. I'm sure that is the sensor, it seems like a gm issue if you search it. I wish they just kept things simple, like the old 90s jeep I mainly drive. It has abs, I know it does, but I never interact with it. It never has an issue, it just works when its time. I want to know why this thing can have ABS and never have an issue but modern stuff can't do that.
Hay Eric if you look close at that speed sensor there are 3 or 4 thin raised sections around the body of the sensor , just under the flange , that centers it in the hole. In my opinion because its so thin in that area , thats the only reason it comes out so easy. I have never seen that on any other manufacture except subaru , great design

My favorite repair channel of all time. I live in northeast PA, so the rust factor is the same. The tips on how to deal with rusty cars is invaluable!
Whoa MRS O!!!! Great work as always Eric, and the rubber band tool is awesomeness!
honestly i think the thing that made it expose itself like this is the fact that you had all other issues that could hide it fixed. its a phenomena ive noticed with doing work on my vehicle and when i work on fountain pop equipment at my job. ill fix something and wouldnt ya know it that tempermental problem that never wants to show itself when youre looking suddenly jumps out and says "here i am look at me". almost as if the dirt crud and rust was holding it together lol
Eric, never a brake video i don't enjoy. Always learn something new!
Just like GM's stabilitrak, just goes for no reason. Always check wire connection first for broken wire. Love your videos. Retired from general maintenance 17 years ago and you show me something new every time.
Eric O gets the good comebacks. A come back for more business at South Main. I haven’t seen many super rusty caliper pistons in my time. They must be designing parts cheaper now days
It's always a great moment when the intermittent reveals itself and you can say " I gotcha!" Yes Sir! Brakes and rotors should be good for a while. Good work Mr. O. Nice to see Mrs. O also.

Nice repair as usual. That file looked like a garage sale find that really gets after it!
Hey Eric, where do polar bears keep their money? In a snow bank. Love the videos, keep up the good work!
This kind of stuff is why I like your videos. All the things you should do to make the repair. Spending time on cleaning up rust was a waist of time. The job only calls for this much time. These are things I was told from a shop manager I worked for. I had a car with no ac once that I found damaged wiring harness that was wrapped up in the cv axle. I was told the time I took on the repair didn't make enough profit. Although I had a happy customer because there ac worked. The shop couldn't make the money they wanted to make. I don't work there any more.
Never heard the term " rust jacking, but I had to smile when I heard mower man out mowing again. Need him to drive by my ' lawn .
seen it happen when someone replaced a CV or wheel bearing and plastered everything with copious amounts of never-seize and that interfered with sensor. luckily the all plastic Subaru sensors like those dont get stuck - it is usually the bolt that breaks off on Rustyland cars...
Thank you Mr.& Mrs.O. for the video.
Time flies like a arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.
Thanks for the video. Have a great weekend Eric!
You mentioned in another vid I watched recently book time for some of your services. Being where you live and the extra steps you must take to deal with the rust…your labor times should be billed accordingly from what I can see. God Bless you for dealing with that on a daily basis
A pleasure as always
It amazes me how much customers like these Subaru's regardless of how many repairs they require. And rust---my shop is in Md but get them north of here, whew----God help you. For vehicles that are marketed toward the North and harsh environments----.
Excellent job as usual
Another great video Mr O :-)
I love that old Agway sign on that shack. I've seen you drive past that a few times. I loved going to the Agway in our town with my dad as a kid in another part of New York. Business long gone and now the building is a deserted, rotting eye sore like so many others in New York.
I appreciate the fact that you take the time to test before just throwing a wheel bearing assembly @ it. Btw good dad joke."Have you seen the dog bowl? Response no didn't he could bowl?. Enjoy they day, and keep the videos coming.
great video Mr. O, as a long time subaru owner, i do a lot of the work /maintenance myself, i can comment subies do not like aftermarket crap, like dura, o'rei, nap crap, for example. oem rotors and pads i get 60-70k miles, folks i drive into nyc on a regular basis, after market crap? at 30 k, start getting the shakes. in my experience i always try to use oem subaru parts, many made in japan. and if you shop around, you can get good prices. my 2011 3.6 outback has 260k. still going strong. thank you for video.
good job, good find on the speed sensor..! Eric you are so blessed with a good supportive Wife!

I would drive from CT to NY just to Eric could work on my car. You are a legend!
Great video as always, yep brakes are one of those things most over look till it’s two late. No matter what I change the front brakes one the wife’s car every two years and the back every 4 years, not that she thru them that fast but it saves on rotors and gives me a chance to lube the slides
I have a '06 Forester and last year the LF caliper was hanging up. Stab the brakes and it would drag and not release. The last time this happened I barely got the car home and it was smoking hot. I hauled it to the local Subie dealer as no time to mess with it and winter fast approaching. The rotors, pads, and calipers got replaced ($900). I am sure I could have got the parts and done it myself a lot cheaper but my time is worth something too. Did the wheel bearings on it some years ago so familiar with the assembly of it all. The wheel speed sensors look different from those on this car in the video but they DO have "rust relief" in that there are ribs on the OD of the sensor in the hole so that it does not rust solid in there.
Eric, Great video and fix of the pungy spedal - thank you! SMA#1 Paul (in MA)

Technically not a shop comeback because the diagnosis was never confirmed and no repair was made. I had many intermittent issues over the years and I only had so much time to diagnose them. Tons of TAC and TANS cases which required factory engineers to get involved. Thanks for the video Eric!

Mrs. O comes in looking like a bombshell!
Looks like someone changed the pads, but didn't grease the pins. The pads and rotors look fairly new. It's crazy how much rust you guys have to deal with. Here in Oklahoma, I don't think I've ever seen locked pins.. unless the pads were wore down to the steel and even then.. I don't think I've ever seen one locked unless the rubber boot was gone. Salt is a nightmare that I don't ever want any part of.
