What makes Re:Zero so great to me, even the background characters are so well written. They have fleshed out backstories you actually get to see & no worries the most fun is when you can’t predict what is going to happen. It just shows how good the writing is 3:03 Here you go predicting a line Subaru is gonna say later in the episode again 7:30 Famous last words 😭 Holy, you just kept going 9:50 Garfliel doesn’t care about the villagers, the people he wants to protect are the residents of the sanctuary that always been in there with him even tho that doesn’t make the case for his logic any better 10:50 Subarus gate broke in this moment btw, that’s why he said thank you to it. At the beginning of the season Felis warned him not to use for like 2 months & it’s been only a few days since they left Crusch’s residence. That means he can’t use any magic anymore 11:28 The crystal drained Garfs mana, also puck already existed before the contract with Emilia so him disappearing doesn’t mean he died. The crystal stores mana just like the one Emilia had, that’s why he’s able to inhabit it even tho it’s not as powerful 14:26 It’s still first opening of this season 🌚 And before you ask, Subaru used the sloth witch factor since his gate was broken he had to pull something from way deeper within him. Ram and Garfiel actually know each other since they’re kids since Roswaal took Rem & Ram to the sanctuary sometimes. It’s explained in a side story 32:20 This scene is confusing to a lot of people because of the dialogue, but Garfiel saw the messages Subaru left for Emilia in the trial room that’s why Subarus is embarrassed. Idk why everyone’s minds goes to jacking off tho ☠️ Also Garfs age explains why he’s been acting the way he did all this time, he’s basically just an angry kid that doesn’t know how to deal with his emotions 34:45 Notice how Emilia hit the Subaru pose there, someone’s been coloring off on her Frozen witch is what the villagers called Emilia in the OVA, she just uses that name to actually empower herself on this instance. 15:00 it was explained many times, Subaru absorbed Petelgeuse's witch factor after he died..and now he awakened Unseen Hand 33:50 yup, Subaru wrote that instead of staying with her, also Garf saw the writings when he went inside before Emilia and that's why Subaru is embarrassed 34:35 gotta love Emilia's "Subaru's impression" Emilia saying "witch's daughter" is just a figure of speech since ppl always called her that for her apparence.

It's mentioned in Emilia's trial that Fortuna is the sister of Emilia's father which means that Emilia's father was an elf, since Satella is a half-elf if she would have a child with Emilia's supposed elf father she would not be a half-elf and instead 3/4 elf. It is also said in the anime that the events in the forest are about 100 years before the story or so, and it's said that Satella had her rampage 400 years ago which also means that the timeline is a bit too weird for Satella to be able to be Emilia's mother. With all this evidence I would say that it is highly unlikely for Satella to be Emilia's mother.

@@blackcid The most likely witch to be Emilia's mother is Minerva. It is absolutely impossible for it to be Satella or Echidna, as Satella would make it so Emilia isn't a half elf and Echidna died a virgin. Minerva is the only witch other than Echidna that was a human too so unless there are other witches we don't know about she's pretty much the only option.

Emilia did try to make a "Natsuki" greeting. She stroke a pose, said her name in fashionable way and instead of saying something nice she said something negative (just like Subaru when he introduced himseld as broke). Frozen Witch was the name the villagers called her in Movie remember? Villagers thought that all the snow in forest was made by her, that's why she is naming herself that way

So heres the gist of it, Subaru, after killing betelgues, obtained betelgeus' sloth witch factor. (unseen hands) echidna mentioned this in her first meeting Also, one more point of clarification for something a lot of people get confused about. when garfiel said he saw subaru's desperation, at the end of the episode, he was talking about the massive love letter for emilia he wrote in the whole chamber. garfiel saw it cause he entered first. and subaru wasnt expecting that. also, when emilia said fellow witch, she didnt mean she was satella. she was referring to how she was called the frozen witch of the elior forest. you saw that in the OVA

echidna mentioned the sloth witch factor multiple times, now we finally see it in action, also what you saw there when subaru used ""shamac"" was his gate breaking. so he can no longer use magic ever again..... he overused it and now even a healer like felix cant do anything about it. emilia cant be a witch since she doesnt have a witch factor..... she's just using the term ""witch"" as a title since she's been called that her whole life so shes calling herself the frozen witch coz it sounds cool

She doesn't have a witch factor that we know of, but that strange magic she uses that sucks blood out through ice crystals is NOT a spell. It's some other power that no one knows of and could possible be an Authority granted by some unknown Witch Factor.

"Frozen Witch" is just a nickname by the people in the Frozen bonds movie.

This is not explained at all in the anime. For context, why Garfiel understood and accepted why his mother had "abandoned" them, that she "couldn't even look at them" and still wished her happiness. As for Frederica birth, her mother was captured by a group of bandits and she became their leader's own possesion - so Frederica was born. Then another group of bandits destroyed the first group of bandits and Frederica's mother became the second bandit groups leader's possesion - so Garfil was born. That's in short.

Before subaru used the unseen hand, and the cracking happened and he said thank you, That was his mana gate fully breaking. Since it still had not healed after he overused it in season 1, and it broke for good here, if he didnt now have unseen hand that would be his last time using magic. He thanked his gate and/or shamac itself for how many times it was useful for him, and this was its final use. And the unseen hand was in subaru ever since he killed Betelguese, that is what the witch factor was, the sloth power is now Subarus, it just only like awakened in him and was used for the first time now, Subaru probably didnt even know he would be able to use it

10:50 so you were confused here ill make it simple: remeber how subarus gate (magic organ) has been highly damaged this entire time? yea this scene is him breaking it beyond repair after this point he can no longer use magic or expel mana from his body without the mana eating curse that the dogs put on him the other time (only the one that pushes out mana broke so his body still absorbs it) the unseen hand he uses soon after is not fueled by magic

**As you heard from other comments, Subaru broke his gate during his fight with Garfiel. i feel like the anime could never do the scene justice, so imma quote part of it from the webnovel, because its one of my favorite moments from the whole series:** "The taxation of his gate, which he had been warned not to use. The Capital's greatest healer had cautioned that he may never be able to use magic again. Betraying that advice, Subaru utilized the thing once more. He feels his imperceptible gate burn. The foundations of this gateway within his centre sways tremendously, and somewhere far and distant and separate from his body, something severs. This pain of something violently, messily, being wrest away. Alongside the lossful sense of what will never be recovered, it brings Subaru's heart understanding. Subaru: “Thank you.” A strand he had continuously relied upon is cut. He doesn't mind. An option that he supposedly lacked in the first place had merely been eliminated in earnest. Regardless, it was owing to that power that he managed to get this far, and for that he was grateful."

12:00 the crystal on emilia isnt pucks soul its his house when he was contracted with her (since he broke the contract the house collapsed) so he just lives as scattered mana at the moment federicas necklace also happens to be a mana crystal like emilia's so hes using it to help them out a little even without the contract

Subaru really got the whole squad jumping a 14 year old. Also, Emilia pulled a Subaru at the end there. Look how salty Echidna is rn... Subaru rejects her, invades and vandalizes her turf, scores another girl (which she hates) in her own house, and to top it off, said girl comes to challenge her trial.

just a couple of clarifications about this chapter: 1 at the moment in which Subaru uses the shamak a scene occurs like glass breaking, this is Subaru's door, which Felix told him that he should stop using because if he followed him acting as it would break forever and Subaru wouldn't be able to use magic again...! 2 at the moment in which Subaru hits Garfiel the power he uses is that of laziness, the same one that Petelguse used and that Subaru inherited when he died... 3 Garfiel's apology to Subaru is because when he entered the tomb first to carry out the trial he was the first to see the message that Subaru wrote for Emilia on the walls.😅

So as cool as that was, some things to point out. Firstly, what you see that happens around when Subaru's authority of sloth activates is his gate breaking, which means as is he can never do magic on his own again. Also while it is still cool Subaru unfortunately only gets 1 hand and it's range is limited. So basically he's like a budget Betelgeuse.

It was only slightly hinted at the first cour but, Echidna *hate* Satella. She hate the witch of envy so much, she even hate Emilia also just for having the same appearance as Satella. So everytime Subaru got the special privilige of Echidna kindness at her tea party, on the contrary, Emilia always got the verbal abuses & hate speech from the witch of greed everytime she took the trials.

I don't think Graf's mother meant to just leave them for long at all. She was leaving them in the care of Ryuzu clones in the sanctuary, and she did intend to come right back once she found their farther. It was bad luck that she was in an accident, think of it like getting hit by a car while visiting the shop. That is why Garf's past is so sad.

Ah I see, that's really sweet/inspirational in a way seeing an older gentleman still putting his best foot forward one step at a time. I saw you glance out of the window once or twice during this reaction so in the back if my mind I was somewhat wondering what had grabbed your attention. I thought maybe it was just really pretty or nice lighting coming from outside , but instead it was your neighbor. That was a perfectly timed story to share right along with the conclusion of a sweet moment in the re:zero episode.

Re:Zero is just amazing. How things change completely from one moment to the other, and yet those changes are so logical. What I like the most from this episode is how Subaru's words become the foundation of Garfiel's resolution to move on from his obsessive emotional rut. And the best thing is how each and every development propitiates the next like the best domino effect ever. You are in for some great episodes. Better be ready so you don't miss a thing.

Subaru is not only the man, but is like a Boss or also known as a Gigachad! 😎 I cannot wait for next episode it is one of my favorites! You will know once you see it and I can't wait to see your reactions to it! 😄

Patrasche is MVP (Most Valuable Parachute)! Also, Garfiel at the end is just referring to Subaru's love notes for Emilia. Since Garfiel did the trial first, he was the first to see them, so Subaru got all embarrassed :D The fight scene between Garfiel and Subaru was actually heavily condensed here from the novel (probably due to time constraints) although the major points are still there. The novel actually has them throwing hands for a good while, especially after Subaru uses the pendant with Puck inside. Speaking of which, the anime also cuts out a couple flashback conversations between Puck and Subaru where he gets the idea of using Puck as a trump card against Garfiel, which might have added to the confusion. Emilia's pose at the end in front of Echidna is also sort of an imitation of Subaru's iconic disco pose. There may be more to her words, but I think Emilia is mainly trying to show her resolve to Echidna this time, since prior attempts ended in utter failure as she couldn't access those memories. It is interesting that Echidna is immediately hostile to Emilia, given Echidna is normally nice or indifferent to visitors to her dream castle. We'll see their interaction develop further in the coming episodes. Thanks again Luke for another great reaction video.

Being someone who can't enter the trial, watching everyone go into the temple. I like to think from their perspective, everyone could just be lying, and they just go in their for a nap and some cookies. They come out and pretend that they are dealing with the most traumatic stuff 😂

15:06 When Beetlegeuse died his Sloth Factor transfered itself to Subaru. This was mentioned in the first tea party with Echidna where she also mentioned the Chidna Tea stablised it in Subaru. Essentially since the end of Season 1 Subaru has been able to use the ability of Sloth: Unseen Hand however it took him this long for the factor to be integrated so he can use it properly. Also even though he can use it his is weaker as you can see.

15:15 he got the witchfactor of sloth (which creates the authority of sloth) when betelguese died he just didnt know how to use it until now (or it was unstable and he just couldnt use it i guess) thats what echidna meant when she said the tea synchronized the witchfactor inside him (basically the tea enabled him to use the witchfactor)

Garfiel's past is super sad, but now we are waiting to find out about Emilia, looking forward to the next couple episodes 10:50 The thank you isn’t properly explained but Subaru is thanking his body for letting him use magic 1 final time, but his gate that had let him use magic just broke 12:00 yeah puck is mostly fine, he just broke the contract and couldn’t stay with Emilia, your assumption that puck breaking the contact killed him was kinda weird to be honest, considering he's a spirit and was fine prior to the contract 14:51 The sloth witch factor as has been previously stated is in Subaru now, implications have now been revealed 34:00 yep and Garf saw all the messages on the wall because he went into the trial room first, hence Subaru’s embarrassment 35:00 The meaning of "witch's daughter" is certainly mysterious but it's hard to see how she could be Satella's daughter given that both Emilia and Satella are supposed to be half-elve's. The meaning of "fellow witch" though might not need to be taken seriously as Emilia doesn't seem to really understand what makes someone a witch but was called one by lots of people simply due to her appearance/race

The Anime Trope of "Misunderstanding your Parents' Actions" is always a lovable thing to watch. Whenever I see anime characters talk about how their dad/mom left them when they were kids because they were "bad parents" or they "didn't love them", I just remember that all of the previous anime series I've watched have taught me the following lesson: THE ANIME CHARACTER IS ALWAYS IN THE WRONG AND 99% OF TIMES THEIR SAID PARENT HAS AN ACTUAL NOBLE REASON TO LEAVE. Why? Because you must pay attention to the fact that they were little kids who never properly knew their mom or dad, that's the case with Garfiel here. Did his mom ever told him she wanted to abandon them? Nope, HE assumed that was the case. What if she was trying to find a way of getting help from the outside to free her children? But no, that idea never crossed Garfiel's mind. Cheers!!

He just wasn't going to raise his son given his ambitious career as a Hunter, so he made the best decision of leaving Gon with Mito to take care of him. There is no misunderstanding of decisions, and since episode 1 it is crystal clear that Ging was just not father-material. Therefore no contradiction with my statement. Like he always knew his parents loved him, it's literally the idea that she loved him and then died for nothing which he saw in the trial as a toddler which put him in denial since he couldn't handle the idea his dead mother loved him. And that trope plus your reading is really toxic because you end up biased towards doubting children hurt by their parents.

Someone else may have already mentioned this idk, but the reason Garf always says wierd things is a joke from the author. It's the idea that Subaru is always saying wierd stuff from his world that nobody understands, and this is how it feels from the otherside 😂

Subaru really desecrated Echidona's grave with love letters, also just for bonus points if you've forgotten, he lost his ability to take the trials so just being in the tomb was extremely painful for him. And yet again he wrote everything in the native language of the worlds citizens, so it's also a showcase of how much he's improved in writing. That man is not to be underestimated when it comes to using his unstoppable willlpower to do some dumb things. Riding the nose of a whale while in the clouds, walkig through a mansion knowing an assassin is there, like this is singlehandely the most wholesome use of his willpower. Another thing to note is that ALOT of Garfields antagonistic/ anger prone behavior can literally be explained through his age. The mindset of letting noone leave the sanctuary due to his own trauma, the (occasionally murderous) tantrum he throws as Subaru goes behind his back in the timelines, the fact that his trauma born though his trial was because he chose his own perspective on what happened and refused to finish it and see it through. Like alot of that stuff was too much for a 13 year old to be handling, so his answer to most problems are just letting his anger get to him and getting more aggressive like a child would.

Echidna mentioned a few times about "Witch factor" and the fact that Subaru has the sloth with factor in him after killing Petelguese. Witch factors are the power that make someone a "witch" Emilia isn't a witch she called herself "frozen witch" in the second movie you saw. It's not because she is a literal witch.

Garfiel's reasons may seem stupid but you must remember that hatred of people of mixed blood still exists outside the sanctuary. and it was so much that it even led to a war between humans and Demi humans... so he is partly right because following Luke's example, the tornado is still outside the shelter...😂

emilia is a witch in name only (for her its a nickname she doesnt get any powers with teh title) because in re:zero a witch is not a form of mage (though the characters in teh world dont understand that) there are qualifications to be a witch but its not known what specifically emilia calling herself a witch is referring to the fact she got a nickname from the ignorant people of being a witch (a sidestory mentions the info about mage and witch being different things and that qualifications to become a witch exist)

About Garf and fight with him. In normal conditions Subaru's hand wouldn't even tickle him. Every Rezero character with inhuman stats like speed or strength get it mostly from mana circulating in their bodies, "answering" to their fighting will. The nuance here is if body is completely empty in terms of mana - person is already dead or (if he's really strong) - half dead and nearly powerless, losing literally everything needed in fight: strength, speed, durability etc. Subaru stabbed Garf with crystal with Puck inside, who instantly drained Garf to state of nearly regular 14 y.o child.

12:20 Puck broke his contract with Emilia because his contract forced her to lose her past memories to allow her to regain those memories to complete the trial. This did not kill him but merely turned him into a free unbound Spirit much like Beatrice. As he was now a free Spirit he was capable of forming a new contract and decided to form a temporary contract with Subaru to help Emilia as he still cares for her. The reason it is temporary shall be explored a bit later.

Gotta remember that Emilia being Satella's daughter doesn't genetically make sense because both are half-elfs. There's also several layers of meaning happening here. Emilia is taking the Witch title as a means of owning the discrimination she's been faced with up till know and fighting back with it. Echidna on the other hand isn't likely to be using it this way and is using it literally. So despite them both using the term "witch" Emilia and Echidna have different meanings attached to it. But yes the implication is that one of the witches is Emilia's mother. Who that is is big mystery. But re:zero loves to drop hints so the community has a pretty good idea who it is. Be sure to watch for those hints!

Although they're not genetically related, it DOES genetically make sense because two half elves will still make a half elf, so if Emilia's parents were both half elves it would have still made sense

keep in mind that the anime cuts out some details that makes things a bit confusing. after subaru wakes up puck, they hatch a plan for puck to break emilia's contract so she remembers her memories, meanwhile puck moves to inhabit frederica's crystal which subaru has until they can get puck a gem good enough to have him manifest again. puck only broke the contract to force emilia to regain her memories of childhood. currently inside that crystal, puck cant even speak, only make glowing lights that resemble speech. a higher grade gem would be needed to have puck actually show up again oh also i should mention that in the web novel subaru and garfiel ACTUALLY have a fistfight that goes on all the way into the evening, until both are tired and subaru uses invisible providence and garfiel gets back up and parachute comes in and you know the rest. but yeah, they actually have a whole drawn out fistfight infront of the sanctuary

I'm pretty sure this is not a spoiler, since the explanation comes from a side story: A proper "witch" is just anyone with a witch factor. As far as we know, Emilia doesn't have one. Subaru on the other hand DOES have one, so he's technically a witch now.

37:55 I don't know spoilers about re:zero, here's just my opinion. I think Emilia is the witch of envy, but in the future. Emilia is the witch of envy before becoming a witch, I guess you could say that... And then something happened to the subaru, and she couldn't forgive herself and went back in time, and brought the subaru to her world, and it turned out the power to never die again, but this power came with "side effects". Well, that's my theory.

I think it is important to point that Garfield is 14 years old.

subaru getting an authority and one punching garfield was amazing. amazing. epsecially since garfield can heal just by touched earth with his feet due to a divine blessing. witouht it would hava been an instant, invisible knockout. the music, the speech, the visual effects were all spot on. i loved this moment

Well, technically the only thing that made this attack impactful was Puck, who absorbed all the mana from Garf's body, turning him into half-dead state. Its underlined fact in WN, without Puck's help Garfiel wouldn't even flinch after hundred of such punches.

I always thought Garf meant Subaru kissing Emilia by the desperate comment but yeah as others said him saying it about the writings makes more sense. Also one small thing to mention is that the villagers arent the only ones at the sanctuary there's other half-blood people too.

Third thing to point out... she did the Subaru pose!

I think your non spoiler is a spoiler is too obvious, delete the first point.

From what we seen in the story thus far you can have a title of a witch or sin archbishop, but do not have witch factor, or opposite, have witch factor but not a title. Example of the former would be Emilia and the later Subaru. Basically people can call you what they think you are, but outside of that there are witchfactors that make "true witches" if that makes sense

Remember that Garfiel age is only around 13 or 14 in this arc. So, he isn't matured enough yet.

Just here to mention that since Subaru is no longer qualified, he had to do all the Scribbles in the Sanctuary while constantly being rejected by it.

Garfiel's intention is to protect the people of Sanctuary from that discrimination by keeping them confined and away from those who would discriminate against them.

It's always great to watch these reactions again. Just a quick note: I believe that Emilia refers herself as the frozen witch since she woke up from the ice and she possess some interesting magic powers (if you remember emilia's backstory in frozen bonds). So on the frozen witch thing was originally revealed back during her speach (alot of witch was cut ) at the capital from the books its mostly a title then being a actual witch because of how she looks and living in that forest from the movie before roswald picked her up and on the point of her being a witches daughter well you might have a theory about that soon

Garfiel being so kind, wanting happiness for his mom even though she abandoned them... Thinking he and Fred are burdens is so awful, they were just children, they deserve to feel like they're loved.

Long story short for the confusing things that were not explained or just mistaken... Garf wanted his mom tonbe happy even if she left them beacuse he "knew" what he snd his sis were tonher... Reminders of how a bandit's group "kidnapped" her for a few years her and she ended pregnant with frederica, then sh got kidnapped by a second group where she ended up having garf... So he wanted her to go away fromall that and be happy... Puck never died... He broke his contract with emilia and went away hence emilia's contract broke... He uses the special crystals for his contracts... So by using frederica's crystal he made some sort of connection to "this realm" (just to put it some way not the exact thing) to give a small help to subaru... By supressing at least garf besst form (remember he and betty can drain magic? Subarunasked betty that long ago)... So now garf has to fight on his human form only... Lastly... Subaru was thanking his now broken gate (we see it crack) for his las time using Shamack... Despite everyone telling him his gate was in really bad shape because if his misuse of it... He damaged it with the dogs, he hurt it even more in the duel against the knight snd he used it a last time here... Now it is broken... So remember this bit...

35:38 The witch of envy is a halve-elf and emilia is also one so she can't be her daughter since, that would make her a quarter elf and consequently she could leave the sanctuary without taking the trial and she wouldn't be able to take the trial in the first place since only halve bloods can.

i mean it could technically be possible if her father is ALSO half-elf (even though I think her mother is one of the other witches). Half elf mother + half elf father = half elf baby (but clues in later episode suggest her father is full-elf) but also you don't need to be exactly half-blood to take the trial, you just need to be mixed-blood as evidenced by Garfiel taking it

@@lleonidasiongarfiel is quarter blood, that’s why he can leave the sanctuary. The condition for the trial is having mixed blood, the half blood thing is the condition for the barrier blocking you.

It's unclear at this point how literal Echidna is being when she calls Emilia "Witch's daughter", it might just be her being mean. Frozen witch / witch of glaciation are titles that Emilia was called during her time in Elior forest after thawing (i.e. during the ova), she's basically adopting them to dunk on Echidna.

Its unconfirmed but theres a fair theory that emelia is minerva's (witch of wrath) daughter

No one spoil me I've had enough spoiled but I can't really judge Garf's mom without more context. Bringing his father back is so vague; he could be kidnapped or just run off. I lean towards the former as it applies to the reason being an acceptable one, because Frederica seems supportive, despite the implication that it was Garf's dad she's leaving for (and they supposedly have different dads). Unless i missed something exceptionally obvious 😅 also grandmother could apply to their actual grandmother or Ryuzu but i think im supposed to infer the latter in that regard

Witches daughter is seen as an insult, she is not the witches daughter. Her father is an elf and her mother a human, according to some theories Echidna. Those have little backing aside from Echidna being the human that has the closest resemblance to the witch/Emilia. Emila is only calling herself the Frozen witch, she is not what the inhabitants of that world call a witch. A witch posses a witch factor of one of the original 9 deadly sins, while only the later version of the 7 deadly sins are commonly known. Yet there is more to being a witch than just having the witch factor as seen by the fact that one of the Sin Archbishops is female, yet not a witch.

35:30 actually saying emilia is the daughter of the witch makes no sense with the information we have even in arc 7 of the novel becuase the witches of sin died 400 years ago and emilia is only 100 years old (aka theres a 300 year gap between the time they lived respectively) also emilia is only a witch in the sense that common people spread a rumor giving her the nickname she doesnt actually have witch powers (like teh authority of sloth gluttony or greed that you have already seen)

Emilia calling herself the frozen witch is because that's what she began being called because she's a half elf, once again she's not really an actual witch.

Emilia called herself the frozen witch back in the forest to scare the people from going into the forest and to protect the town by distancing herself from them by calling herself "a witch"... So essentially Emilia is daying withc? Sure sure echidna... I am a witch too... Whatever... You calling yourself that wouldnt scarem me... I can call myself that too... In fact i already have...

Emilia's mother is human, it is impossible for Satella to be her mother since she is half-elf
