SUBARU HOW TO: How To Change the Battery in Your New Generation Subaru Key FOB

SUBARU HOW TO
Here's how to change the battery in your New Generation Subaru key FOB.
USE THE CHAPTERS TO SKIP TO THE PARTS YOU NEED.
I go into detail showing how to change the battery, how to avoid popping out the spring, how to put the spring back in, if you pop it off, and just about every other mistake, so you don't make them, or can learn how to fix them.
NOTE: In the video when I reference "up" and "down" and "top" and "bottom", it is in relationship to how the keyfob hangs from the keyring. Swap the directions, if you are looking at your keyfob from the opposite direction.

Thanks! Perhaps because it's totally tool-less this way? Sadly, there's a few ways to mess it up though, which would make screws easier, but, there's not too much room to add screws and keep the water resistance. I'd personally prefer a flatter design with buttons that weren't so easy to press. I end up hanging mine on a belt loop to avoid accidentally pressing a button.

Unfortunately I watched a short video and opened my fob incorrectly. He had the valet key parallel and twisted against the plastic to open the fob, rather than putting the key into the perpendicular slot and gently pushing down to open as you demonstrated. All the buttons fell out because he did not advise fob face down orientation and with no instruction on how to reassemble, which I also did incorrectly. Fortunately another search turned up your video and I was able to re-assemble my fob perfectly! Thank you so very much for your detailed explanations! If the metal block with the spring pops out and does not lock back down, does that mean a piece of plastic broke off it while opening it? Changed the battery went to slide in the emergency key and it won’t lock back in and the metal spring box does not lock in, like this video shows. Key fob closes and works but emergency key won’t lock into place

  • @SubaruAmbassadorRobert

Sadly, possibly. If you've lost a piece or broke one, the easiest and cheapest fix is to find an empty FOB case for sale on ebay, and to swap your electronics board and key into it. If you run into any other issues, feel free to message me on Facebook on my Subaru Ambassador Robert page. I will be able to send you pics and vids that may help, depending on where you're stuck in the process.

Hi! Fortunately, it's not related to a battery change, so, let's dig into possibilities. First thing I'd do is make sure the car is unlocked and in park. Then, make sure you're pressing the middle button, and not the one on the right (the one on the right is to lock the liftgate, or to enter a secret pin to unlock the car). If that doesn't work, then turn off the liftgate height button on the button panel in front of the driver's left knee and try again. Let me know if that helps.

Well, yes... I kept in mind all of the various mistakes numerous people have made over the last few years, and made sure to cover them too. The toughest part of making any video is making it suitable for numerous people's widely varying technical abilities. 😉 Anyway, I hope it helped regardless. I'm thinking of trying to make quick versions that then have secondary sections for "what if this went wrong?" at the end for the next ones. It just requires a lot of extra filming, and I don't have a lot of free time from my actual day job. Thanks for the critique. I'll see what I can do on the next ones. 🙂
