Subaru Head Gasket - EA82 Engine - 1986 GL Wagon - Carbureted 1.8 Liter - Start To Finish

The Head Gasket on the LH side decided to give out on my 3rd Generation Wagon. Here is the video I made in the process of fixing it.
I show the whole process;
Engine tear down,
Getting the Engine out of the Car,
Prepping of all the parts,
Assembling the Heads,
Assembling the Cam Towers,
Setting the Timing Belts
Setting Ignition Timing,
Installing the Engine back into the Car,
Etc...
The EA82 engine was Subaru's first Timing Belt Engine (OHC)
Before, with the EA81 and all previous EA engines, they were OHV, pushrod engines.
This EA82 engine is an early version. It is Carbureted instead of Fuel Injected.
Originally it would have a Hitachi Carburetor. Several Years ago I swapped on a Weber 32/36 DGEV Carburetor. I still have the original Hitachi carb with it's Intake Manifold sitting on the shelf.
This model also had Air Conditioning, but that has been removed as it was no longer working and Washington only gets hot in the Summer. This combined with the Weber Carb swap has simplified the engine compartment.
Also, I run the Timing Belts without Covers. This makes getting to the Timing Belts much easier.
The process here will be similar for all 1985 - 1994 EA-82 engines.
This engine was used in the wagon, sedan, coupe, and XT variants.

    Just EJ swap it!!! I did mine and I’ve never regretted it. So easy! Probably easier than doing a head gasket lol these EA82 engines are not very well designed… and they are SPFI. Basically computer controlled carb. I drive it 110 miles a day round trip on my commute and it has been a pleasure

    That may be something I'll do in the future when parts for the EA82 are no longer available. It was simple and cheap to do the headgasket on this engine. This engine is carbureted, however later models are SPFI like you say. There were also MPFI models available as well as the addition of Turbocharged MPFI models. Would love the added power of the EJ engine, however this engine is still plenty healthy for now and has enough pep to keep up with traffic

    Glad you liked the video. The EA81 is a little different, but the father of the EA82. The EA81 uses push rods driven from a single center camshaft to time the valvetrain. Unlike the EA82, which uses timing belts to drive the two overhead camshafts.

    You are correct. So hopefully it will be a bit simpler to change the head gasket. Even tho all the research I've been doing on the forums. Many say my issue is more like an intake gasket and not the head gasket. Rare to an EA81T with head gasket issues. I'll just refresh the whole engine.

Sprayed carb cleaner around to try and find the leak while the engine was running... ended up spraying around the intake manifold gasket on one side and found that gasket to be damaged and sucking in air. Your engine in the '79 Brat is most likely a EA71, right? A similar engine but a bit different... You have overhead valves in your engine, which probably need adjusting, both intake and exhaust valve clearance to the rocker arms. I cannot remember the tolerances off hand but that info is in the Haynes etc manuals or online. My engine, the EA82, has hydraulic lifters that are not adjustable. They ticked at first because they had not yet built oil pressure in them.

    It is totally doable, it just makes things a bit easier to get to with the engine out... less bending over the fender into the engine compartment. When putting the cam case back in, lift the side of the vehicle that is being worked on, so that the 4 rocker arms that touch the cam are less likely to fall off. Also assembly lube helps to hold them in place.

    To all the subaru fans out there, going to post here a problem with my EA82 (was pulled from a Loyle,92-93) I pulled YEARS ago, put the project on the back burner for years. this here is what I had then. (kzread.info/dash/bejne/i2ujl5ezgtG8d6w.html ) I am retired now so I started in on this project again. This project was/is for an airboat, as you can see in the above video. Brought a radiator, not OEM, but I forgot how the radiator hoses was connected to the engine. My radiator is installed On the back side (behind) the engine where the Airboat prop is used for a fan. I search the internet for how this is done. From my searching, *All radiators are hooked up TOP outlet going to thermostat, Bottom outlet is hooked to water pump.* What my engine was doing was backward from just that. So I did an experiment. My Experiment: Removed thermostat, (so no restrictions) installed hose outlet back on as normal. Installed small piece (length) of hose on it and the big line coming from water pump. None of these hose are connected to radiator. With a water garden hose, pumped water into where the thermostat sits, NO water was/would pumped out through the water pump. Then, I put the water hose into the water pump line and it immediately stated pumping water out though the thermostat. This result is BACKWARDs from my understanding!! *Can someone explain this?* Am I right

  • @creativelivingnorthwest

    That is correct. The coolant comes from the radiator, flows to the lower hose and into the pump, through the engine, out the thermostat, and into the upper hose, back into the radiator.

  • @creativelivingnorthwest

    @creativelivingnorthwest

    9 ай бұрын

    You're welcome. The ticking is the lifters making noise because they haven't built oil pressure yet. Shortly after that in the video the engine quiets down because they finally built pressure. I did not block off the EGR but I know people that have and enjoy their engine that way. I am not running the charcoal canister. The PCV Valve is at the back of the intake manifold. The LH side valve cover breather connects to the PCV Valve with a reduction T fitting into the Air Cleaner. Make sure to loop the hose up high so that oil sloshed to the left under long sweeping right turns is not pulled into the carb. The RH side valve cover breather goes straight to the air cleaner. I only have Vacuum Lines associated with the EGR hooked up and for the advance of the distributor.

    You said: "One question, how can I calibrate valves? I didn't see anywhere that you did it." To service the valves you would need to have a valve compressor tool while the heads are removed from the block. It would be a similar process to any other engine as far as lapping and or replacing the valves. The EA82 engine does not require valve clearance adjustment because they are hydraulic. The EA81 and EA71 engine would require the lifter arms to be gapped to specification for each valve according to the needed gapping for the exhaust and intake valves.

This is because the positive crankcase ventilation flows from the engine that direction.
