Thank you for all the great videos! I tried a leakage test for the first time thanks to your video and understand why to perform the test. 06 outback 2.5 non-turbo, cylinder 2 has about 35%leakage with air heard escaping only in cylinder 2 & 4, no other spots mentioned in your awesome video. Cylinder 4 has about 5% leakage with no air heard in cylinder 2. Any suggestions? I had the heads surfaced and gasket changed about 40k miles ago, currently 170k miles. Want to keep the car for my sons first car.

Did you ever figure out where your problem was? Did you listen to hear if air was leaking from the exhaust valve? If you don't hear it at the throttle body or the oil fill tube and your coolant isn't bubbling, it must be going out the exhaust, surely.

May I ask home fome with a boost leak test remove the filler cap to not damage rings but with a boost leak it ok to do so? Is it because u knew engine not good anyway? Should u remove filler cap for leak test?

I did a compression test. Cylinder 1 125 Cylinder 2 135 Cylinder 3 145 Cylinder 4 150 I'm in process of thinking about rebuilding the engine. Could it be possible there is a timing issue as to why there low compression in cylinder 1 n 2 I understand can be many reasons. To add the car drives well, reaches just under 1bar boost and it a standard wrx bugeye. Thank u for all your videos. I now have a hobby fixing my wrx because of u. ♥️

I was doing a leak down test on my spare ej engine this am and when I pressured 1 I got air out of 3 plug hole i’m assuming the head gasket is gone between the 1 and 3. It does not surprise me when I pulled the engine it had a cyl 3 misfire.

Can you have good compression but bad leak down? I have high oil consumption (1 quart per 500 miles). PCV is fine. Power is good and compression is good.

+Patrick C. Yes. You can. 1 qt per 500 miles is super excessive. Smoking from the tailpipe?

@@MrSubaru1387 What Patrick described is what I'm dealing with right now on my 2009 Outback. Rebuilt the top end of the engine (heads overhauled and resurfaced by a shop) and I've had smoke on startup and excessive oil consumption (basically what he described). Thanks for the compression test video, I will try to do this soon. All pistons did have good compression I think.

I have a 2006 Subaru STI and Ive recently had the engine re-built. After I got through the break-in period I started having alot of problems, overheating, engine lean, rough idle etc. Now the car has a massive rumble at idle and at 3000rpm there is backfiring(Its a small turbo so it engages at 3000). I have fixed all of the other problems but now it has white smoke coming from the exhaust and from under the oil cap at higher rpms(~3500rpm

Got a Q for you. I just replaced my engine in my 2006 Forester 2.5 SOHC non-turbo (rebuilt from LKQ) and I am getting a misfire on cylinders 8 and 4 but only at high rpm. Sparks and wires are new, coil is new. Any ideas of what the issue may be?

@@braden2591 no, I just told myself save for new engine/rebuild. I did a compression test all were 145/150 but cylinder 1 was 125!!! Leak down all lost no compression!!! Wtf. So confused.when u ask people who are actual mechanics they look at u like ur mad or ask why u bothering!! This why I learnt to fix myself. Can't stand a many mechanic to deal with. No different to a doctor that gas lights u when u say ur ill. Just sends u away if they can...lol I got a 6speed and preparing to just start again. The car performs well. No smoke at all. Like even on acceleration or after. Not even start up is smoke. strange it drinks so much oil!!! This why I learnt to fix it myself because u take it to someone n they act like nothing wrong and say that subaru, they drink oil. I've made myself a smoke tester so I'm gonna do a leak down test with smoke..it too noisy where I am to hear for leaks. I'll let u know how it goes.

Try running Marvel Mystery Oil in the oil to clean up any kind of sludge or carbon buildup. Possibly there's carbon buildup around the rings allowing oil to get by.

WARNING!!! I was doing a leak down test on my '98 wrx sti (ej20) before I saw this video and I screwed one of the adapters that came with the kit into the spark plug hole instead of screwing the pipe in like this guy and I it got stuck! The spark plug hole tapers in and the adapter is bigger and takes a bigger socket than the spark plugs so it went in so far then the socket wouldn't grip it to get it out! lol. I screwed an old spark plug into the adapter with a load of thread lock so I'm hoping it will stick to the adapter and screw out ok lol. Don't do what I did!

  • @CuttinChris

I had almost the same thing happen to me as well. Right before using loctite on a spark plug to try and get the adapter out I tried a nice big wide flathead screwdriver and it grabbed the adapter threads and turned it out so easily i didnt even think it grabbed lol
