Subaru Ascent review: Why so UNPOPULAR?

The Subaru Ascent is available in Convenience, Touring, Onyx Edition, Limited and Premier versions!
New this year:
- The Ascent is distinguished by its bolder look and redesigned front and rear elements
- Latest version of EyeSight driver assistance technology with a wide-angle camera
- Standard wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto
- New panoramic camera with 360-degree bird's-eye view available as an option
- Standard 11.6-inch infotainment system
- New Cabin Connect function that improves communication with third-row occupants
All versions of the Ascent come standard with legendary Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and X-MODE with Hill Descent Control, which provide excellent all-season, off-road capability. The active torque steering system is also standard on all versions.
To enhance all-weather and trail capability, Ascent Onyx, Limited, and Premier Editions come standard with dual-mode X-MODE with Hill Descent Control. This feature includes SNOW/DIRTY DIRT AND DEEP SNOW/MUD settings that optimize AWD performance in difficult road or weather conditions.
Powered by a 260-hp 2.4-litre SUBARU BOXER turbo engine, the Ascent comes standard with the high-torque Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with an 8-speed manual mode and paddle shifters steering wheel gearshifts that allow the driver to shift gears manually. This powertrain authorizes a towing capacity of 2,270 kilos and includes trailer stability control.
However, why is the Subaru Ascent so unpopular? Find out why in our video!
Test model: 2023 Subaru Ascent Premier in Cosmic Blue Pearl with brown Nappa leather interior. Cash: $64,734.37 or Financed: $75,128.11 or 60 months of $1,252.14 at 5.99%.

@user-qj5pw6cn6w been a lifelong honda fan and was torn between 21 pilot and 21 ascent limited. Went with the accent and couldn't be happier honestly. Test drive both, and I just feel like the subaru wins both times during test drives. Went from a 17 sienna and honda didn't want us to take it to subaru to test drive theirs again and see what they would offer us. Look into Hondas issues too with transmission and fuel injector issues.

The Subaru Ascent is not as popular because the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot are both very good. So good that they forced Mazda to redevelop the old CX9 into a new upmarket luxury Mazda CX90 that fights with Infiniti, Acura MDX, and Lexus. 2023 Nissan Pathfinders are also everywhere now too because it’s MSRP is much lower.

@@CarQuestion No, not the Highlander, the lack of a V6 or I6 in a 3-row family SUV is disgusting. Their 2.4L Turbo I4 is not my preference. The Honda Pilot actually has big adult comfortable 3rd row seats with a 3.5L 285hp V6 so it is the obvious choice for my preferences.

Ordered my Ascent in Oct of 2018. Picked it up Jan of 2019. At the time I was shopping for an AWD minivan, not for passengers but for the cargo space. In 2018 the only AWD minivan was the Toyota Sienna. The Toyota just didn’t really appeal to me. Loved the Chrysler Pacifica but they didn’t have an AWD model in the lineup back then. So started looking at 3 row SUV’s that could do the job. I literally looked at everything. Finally narrowed my choice down to two finalists. The Subaru Ascent and the Mazda CX-9. The best bang for the buck was the Subaru and I’ve been ecstatic about it ever since. It’s not flashy in any way but it does the job safely and reliably. Whenever Subaru builds a Wilderness Edition Hybrid Ascent I will be getting it. I’m not retiring anytime soon by the way

Bought a new 23 Ascent a little over a year ago, mainly for road trips, not around town. We love it. Comfortable ride, nice features, and the turbo 2.4 liter responds very well. Maybe too well. Found out early that the slightest gas pedal movement generates a very prompt response. My only problem so far is that, driving it only occasionally, I need to re-study the safety and infotainment functions to stay up to date. I especially love the active cruise control that actually locks onto the car ahead and maintains a fixed distance, slowing and accelerating as they do.

Are any of you current Ascent owners at or above the 100,000 mile mark? If so, how has the CVT been and what maintenance or repairs have been done to the 100,000+ mile car that you own??

Let me point out, popular does NOT = better. How many years has the Highlander been around? How many years has the Ascent been around? I've been in more Toyotas than I can shake a stick at and I'm still at a loss in why the popularity. The insides are made of hard cheap plastic, they're uncomfortable, ride rough, noisy and just look God awful. The outsides don't fare any better for me as far as aesthetics. It's like Toyota tries waaaay too hard to be modern or something, idk, but I think most Toyotas (cause I'm not singling out the Highlander) are overpriced ugly as sin garbage vehicles that ride SOLELY on brand recognition they built decades ago when they actually had nice vehicles. Now it's: "oh, it's a Toyota? Well it has to be good then"......NOT! The Highlander isn't as nice all around as the Ascent, costs more for less and pales in comparison to others like the Telluride, Palisade, CX90 etc. Nice video for Toyota kickback. Just remember when it comes to (ALL) Subarus, there's a good reason why their clients are so loyal.

I just bought my wife s 2024 Ascent Limited this past Saturday for 9.2% off MSRP. We had an older Forester and really liked the Ascent. Before deciding on the Ascent we also drove the Forester, Highlander, Rav4, Passport and CR-V. No regrets and happy with our decision and deal we got. We definitely dealt with some crappy dealers from all brands.

@@sansin6250 I had been looking for a month or two and knew the dealers have year end sales goals to meet. I found the Ascent I wanted and sent out a fishing type email in early December, really just asking for the “out the door price”. To my surprise the salesman contacted me and gave me a great price which was the discount I mentioned. The Ascent wasn’t even on their lot yet and it was a 2024. I waited a week until it arrived, drove down and picked it up. Zero regrets. Our local dealer was $4500 higher than the deal I got. The end of November I also purchased a new Toyota 4Runner for myself. That was 8.6% off MSRP. I had been trying to buy my wife a new car for 2-1/2 years. We’re old farts and set for life until we kick the bucket. Both vehicles also don’t have the annoying feature that turns the car off when you’re sitting at a red light. Good luck and there really are some rotten dealers out there that lie to your face but people keep buying from them. If you can’t wait until the end of next year at least try to purchase end of a month. The dealers have monthly sales goals to meet.

Subaru is good for its awd and safety systems. Other than that, the style and interior are not luxury level. The CX90, the palisade, the telluride have better interior and vehicle styles and are way more luxurious for the same price as the top subaru ascent fully loaded. I drive the 2021 ascent limited in the US and if it was not for the awd and safety systems of this vehicle i would trade it fast for the new CX90 turbo s inline 6 or the palisade calligraphy or the top telluride. I'm a so disappointed in subaru for killing the wrx sti series and making a weak forester instead of the keeping the old forester XT. Subaru should know that drivers sometimes dont care much about gas price and eant to enjoy the power of their vehicles. They should not force us to drive like old people. Thats how i feel when i drive my ascent. Good vidéo.

@@zogadwoeyou need to research a little more on the options the touring has. BTW, who's sitting in your third row ALL the time? I'm assuming children. God forbid the children in the 3 row have heated seats. Your other gripes are actually available in the touring. The 8 seater isn't available in the Onyx, but I guess you drive with that extra eighth person all the time. Let me tell you something, that's not normal. Yes, I sometimes need my 3rd row... SOMETIMES. Not a huge deal and certainly not a huge deal for third row seats to be heated (if they're not in the touring, idk). Extra cargo space when it comes to vehicles is usually a joke to me cause when you're comparing vehicles, if one, let's say the Ascent, has 300 cubic feet (or whatever they are, idk) and the other has 301 cubic feet, technically the ascent has less room, but really????? I say this cause people hear the words like "more cubic feet" and they're thinking, well hell, I gotta get that one but in reality, the difference in cargo space is usually nominal at best and nothing you'd ever notice. But people get sucked into pitches like these cause they don't actually look at the numbers. Oh, the Highlander sells for more vehicles than the Ascent, big freakin deal. It doesn't make it better. Come on people, get down to earth already.

JDM or Japan export market I am coming from. Our Subarus had AT not CVT and so the AWD experience has been excellent. The Ascent AWD has a few deal breakers for me. The CVT is one issue and I hope Subaru address that when a new Ascent model is released. If Subaru goes with a 8AT or 9 they would do better sales, have a quieter drive and still have the MPG. I’ll return for a test drive then. The interior of the Ascent is not that great and looks cheap. I personally don’t like the big touch screens and people seem to be very distracted by these gimmicks. When I test drove the Ascent I didn’t like how it drove, Ottawa winter. Car was very numb and the understeering experienced demonstrated the car doesn’t rotate readily if I left off the gas. You video show lots of understeer before the ban started to rotate. That should be addressed.
