Brilliant! 50 years of expert experience distilled into less than 15 minutes of video. I now feel empowered to do this myself and, with lots of patience and this video I know I can. Thank you!

Yes you are correct. We soak the seals to soften the material and that helps to restore the shape and wrinkles.

At 8:16 you mention that the installation instructions suggest you apply a light coat of silicone, but you don't recommend doing so because using too much might prevent the gasket from being removed in the future. This statement is erroneous and indicates that you may have confused "silicone lubricant/grease" with "silicone caulk/sealant". Silicone grease (e.g., Magic Lube II) is merely a silicone base lubricant that will not only allow the gasket to be more easily slid behind the retaining plates but will actually make the gasket easier to remove in the future because it never hardens. As a bonus, it will also provide a better airtight seal between the gasket face and the refrigerator body. Silicone lubricant with Teflon (PTFE) can also be used for this purpose, but under no circumstance should a petroleum-based lubricant (e.g., Vaseline) be used because it will deteriorate the gasket. Using a silicone caulk type sealant will do exactly as you say, which is effectively glue the gasket to the retaining plates or even worse, the door frame itself, but not so with a silicone lubricant type grease.

Thanks for the feedback. I’ve never used any kind of lubricant on door seals and I very rarely use silicone in the corners as per the instructions, but I have seen some people use silicone chalk around the whole door, needless to say it took hours to scrape it off and a lot of choice words for the person that installed it.

@@SubZeroSpecialists I too choose not to use any silicone grease because it's messy to use, difficult to get off your hands, and pretty much unnecessary if you loosen the retaining screws enough. I was merely pointing out that should anyone wish to follow the installation instructions, they should use silicone lubricant rather than silicone sealant to avoid the problem of being unable to remove the gasket in the future. Other than that clarification, I totally agree with your method of replacing the gasket, especially with the loosening of screws rather than the complete removal of the retaining plates. Thanks for the video.

Is the only reason you soak the gasket to make it easier to work with? Or does it make it expand more and create a better seal to the fridge?

Hi, I saw another youtube and the guy took the retaining plates right off and put them in a new gasket on the floor. Then hung the new gasket on the door and reset all the screws. What are your thoughts?

When they get hard does it leak? Could it cause a vacuum condenser?

A leaky door seal can disrupt the temperature and cause a “vacuum condenser” warning.

Look around the entire perimeter of the door and see if any of the seal is not seated.Sometimes it takes awhile for the seal to seat. Is it an exact Sub-Zero part or did you buy it online?
