I went to see Styx earlier this year (2018) to hear them play the catalog at least one more time. At the show I bought The Mission and I was blown away by the quality of this record. Tommy is right...so many great moments. I love classic Styx and this sounds like it could have been the next record from the classic era. Many bands have lost classic members...Ian Gillan says it well: It's like getting married for a second time and then having everyone want you to get together with your ex-wife. I appreciate the classic rock bands who are still trying to move forward creatively. I'd urge everyone to apply the 'three-listen rule' to The Mission.

Shaw is right when he said that "there was no home for their 2003 release "Cyclorama" on today's radio markets. IMO, 'Cyclorama' was a good album, but many (if not most) of Styx' hardcore fans hated this album for at least 1 of 2 reasons.. These reasons were: 1) First of all, Styx' Longtime fans were very disappointed and upset with 'Cyclorama' because it sounded nothing like Styx. Obviously, part of this was due to the fact that on most Styx albums half of the songs are written and sung by Dennis and there was no Dennis on this album. Also, Dennis, as a producer and one who helped arrange the songs, would often take songs written by Tommy and help shape them so they sounded like Styx. Although there wasn't a formula for a Styx song or a Styx hit, most Styx songs have 2 or more of the following ingredients: i) lush keyboard hooks with distorted power chords sprinkled in the mix,, ii) contrasting acoustic and electric guitars within the same song, iii) often dualing or harmonizing lead licks, fills, or solos, and iv) the Styx' trademark 3-part harmony backing vocals. Although Tommy still wrote half of the songs on this album, the songs he wrote sounded more like Damn Yankees or Shaw-Blades. Unfortunately, it took the band 14 years to realize that if they put out a good album that sounded somewhat like vintage Styx songs of the 70's, the fans would love it. Although 2017's 'Mission to Mars' didn't sell a million plus copies, most of the diehard Styx fans, including myself, loved that album t and it got some good reviews. It also peaked at #45 on the Billboard Top 200 albums, which was 13 spots higher than Equinox charted and 20 spots higher than Crystal Ball.did in the 1970's. 2) Unfortunately, some of the fans were mad (and some are still mad) at JY and Tommy for kicking Dennis out of the band. (Recap: After Brave New World was released, Dennis was sick (chronic fatigue syndrome and overly sensitive to light) and he felt he was physically unable to tour especially with all of his other projects that were going on. The band wanted to temporarily tour without Dennis until he recovered, but Dennis refused to let the band tour without him. He then filed suit claiming that there was no Styx without him even though a few years prior to this Dennis & Styx released an album (Edge of the Century) and had a tour without Tommy Shaw.. In short, this led to legal battles which included a fight over who owned the name Styx and this led to bad blood between the band and Dennis which continues today. Although I'd like to see a final tour with Dennis, I realize that I'm just being a selfish fan. Gowan and Ricky Phillips have been a part of Styx for over 20 years and Tommy, JY, and everyone else is happy with this version of Styx. So I doubt they want to risk.rocking the boa and they certainly don't need the money. Besides it isn't too bad having 2 legitimate versions of Styx out there making records and touring.

Tommy is right about that, most radio stations won't play new music from a classic rock band such as Styx. So they have to continually tour to get their new material heard. And that's too bad because *The Mission* is a great album... Reminiscent of Styx's prog days.

I love The Mission! But, yes, radio is very corporate and structured these days, and the internet is a music free-for-all where everyone has a say and hardly anyone is heard. Still, I think the web is the way to go these days to get new music out there. And I have no problem with Styx continually touring, so I can see all the shows within my reach.

In taking up for us original Styx fans: We from the 70/80 genre, are dying off, and as well, “sadly to say,” all of the original Styx line up will be also. Before that happens, we would love to step back into a more innocent time, and see the original Styx lineup. I’ve seen the newer lineup 3 times, playing with REO, Felder, Foreigner, and loved all 3 shows, but their is a sadness I’m walking away with, is that out of hardheadedness, we will never see the original group once again, though we could, with the exception of John Panozzo. What an excellent memory that would be if we could, and done in memory of John Panozzo! It’s never too late, as of right now, and we don’t have to let it end this way…. Tommy, JY, Dennis DeYoung, I grew up as millions of others did, watching, listening, over the years, it would be awesome to watch y’all rock The Paradise once again! It would be a headline, and greater than a grand illusion! By jove, I wore a Styx belt buckle back in the day, and believe it can happen! You all are Styx, it can be a last goodbye, and as the lights fade, we can all sail away, with a sell out show, “televised of course,” and memories that never fade, of “The Best of Times!”

@@nancychuba2823 Dennis actually made Tommy's songs click from a technical perspective. Dennis had a lot to do with how Crystal Ball 🔮 the song and Renegade sounded before they got to the ears of the public. Gowan a great keyboard player and a decent vocalist will never replace Dennis on one KEY 🔑 ELEMENT. Deyoung was the mastermind behind how the songs turned out even ones he didn't write. That's why the band was so successful. They're just a touring band now and even Dennis couldn't save them because they're a CLASSIC ROCK BAND which means no mainstream hits ever again.

I live in Indianapolis and we have two big Classic Rock in Q95 and Hits in 104.5JJK and it's the same on both. With Q95 it's Renegade, Blue Collar Man and Too Much Time in that order, with Renegade being played the most. Once in a while you might hear Come Sail Away, when it was my main station, Babe was occasionally played. With JJK it's the same thing but with CSA mixed in a lot more. I just listened to the song Tommy was talking about "Mission to Mars" and in 4 years it has just over 30,000 views on the Styx channel. I don't want to be mean, but quite frankly I couldn't make it through the entire song, and I loved Styx and Tommy back in the day. Why would anyone put their $ up to produce something that generates that level of interest? Because they had hits 40-50 years ago?

You are correct in your analysis. In Lou Gramms book he said his last Foreigner album with the band "Mr. Moonlight" 1995-95 tanked because the suits took power away from the disc jockeys and were under orders to play only new music but overseas it was different. Lou says Mr.Moonlight was one of the best albums they made. I personally as a fan disagreed with that statement. Mr.Moonlight did worse than Unusual Heat (1991) with lead singer Johnny Edwards and Mr.Moonlight didn't have the fire and spark of Foreigners first album. So your right the creativity level does fade over time. You are correct.

There is no room for classic rock bands? I think the key is there is room for any band if the music is good. If it’s good people will want it. Heck, U2 is making albums still. Maybe that’s because in 1983 they put out “War” and not the cheese corn Kilroy Was Here.
