i don't normally comment on KZread videos but speaking as a chassidic jew this has to be the greatest representation of the chassidic people i have ever seen by a long shot because a. you let them do the talking without mixing in the worlds opinion b. it wasn't just from one chassidic group but several and what they have in common but not getting caught up in the differences c. THE BEST PART letting chassidic woman explain why they live as they do and not dismissing them as suppressed and not being allowed to express themselves all in all AMAZINGLY DONE this is how any group should be represented. A MILLION THUMBS UP!!!

Modesty is the way a woman takes back her power and says, "no" there is nothing to SEE, you have to know who I am in order to talk to me. I am not my body, it does not govern what you do. Thank you Brian for seeing the beauty beyond the exterior of our ways. I was raised in a secular Reformed Jewish household and later came to study & understand the deeper everlasting ways of a misunderstood people who for most live a life apart but are amongst those in this world.

I’m a Christian and will always be. Yet I cannot fully understand my faith without Judaism as it is the foundation of Christianity. What a wonderful video…educational indeed for me. Thank you. ❤

Thank you for sharing this. I enjoy opportunities to peak into other peoples cultures, religious beliefs and traditions. This was beautiful to watch and I'm glad that I am just a little more knowledgeable about Hasidic Jews.

Was at a park in West Los Angeles and struck up a conversation with a guy in full Hasidic garb. Looked down and saw he was wearing a pair of black lizard skin cowboy boots! I thought that was pretty badass, myself...

@@maleficio5343 That's certainly interesting and I sincerely appreciate the info as someone who admittedly has a lot to learn about a lot of things, but what was cool to me wasn't so much based on the source of the material from which his boots were fashioned, but more how this guy, who is so bound by laws and traditions-- manner of dress being one-- still found a way to meld what would seem to be two incompatible aesthetic and cultural styles, and in doing so, was not only expressing his individuality and personal sense of style, but in a way, was also making a statement about the outlaw, rebellious nature of being someone who lives within a system so bound by laws and customs.

One thing that bugs me about videos of the Chasidim is that they depict different sects as if they were the same. This one jumps constantly from one to the other while making no distinction. The two main sects are the Lubavivith and the Satmar. The Satmar have earlocks and beaver skin hats. The Labovovitch don't. The Lebvovitch try to convert other Jews. Because of this, they are more worldly because they associate with, and sometimes convert, secular Jews. Satmar do not do this. They are like urban Amish. They continue because of births, not conversions. These ultra-orthodox Chasidim are only a small percent of the Jewish population. There are a number of other sects, in order of from ore to less strict are the ultra-orthodox (Chasidim), Orthodox, conservative, and reformed. In addition, there are plenty of secular Jews, not very religious, or perhaps only celebrating the major holidays, who, regardless still identify strongly as Jewish. Ironically, one of the things that keep even the secular Jews from completely assimilating is the anti-semites. As soon as a Jewish person starts to think that they are just like everybody else, along comes some large group of organized anti-semites to remind them that they are not.

The people chosen to represent the Hasidic community in this vid probably really live their lives as idealistically as they present them here. They seem very sincere. It’s never that simple but for the purpose of this video, it works.

so true! I'm Jewish, and we believe that if you are a Jew, you are born with a Jewish soul, and nothing can change that. So, the concept of making a Gentile (someone who is not Jewish) into a Jew, makes no sense, because they don't have a Jewish soul. Also, another interesting fact you could tell your friends is that when a Gentile applies to convert to Judaism, they are told "no, it's not for you" three times. If they come back a fourth time (or sometimes more) only THEN can they convert (which takes about 2 years) so this means that we only want people who are dedicated and committed to our laws and way of life.

Well, it's technically an ethnocentric religion. Its meant not just for one race, but technically one family of people, all decendent from Jacob who became Isreal. You can convert if you're not born into it, but it's not really encouraged. Where as in Islam and Christianity, race isn't a factor, and beleivers in those religions genuinely believe that people who don't believe will suffer for it in the afterlife, so their evangelism comes from a place of altruism, not overbearing conformity.

The beautiful children tell everything about this culture. They look so safe and content. It's because they have two committed parents. Not like mainstream.

Haha, it’s because it’s nothing to do with modesty. The idea is that the woman’s hair undergoes a complete spiritual change when she marries. It’s not that it’s sexy and reserved only for her husband; it’s that it’s HOLY and for her closest family only. Women used to exclusively wear scarves when they married but in Chabad (and probably some other sects), the Rebbe decided that having to wear a scarf which is troublesome and not so pretty would put women off fulfilling the mitzvah (commandment) of covering their hair. He thought that being allowed to wear a wig would encourage married women to want to cover their hair. Nothing to do with modesty so not really much of a loophole. Shalom aleichem from England ✌️

They're not trying to convert us like Bible thumpers do, they're not trying to force us to use words and non- gender pronouns like LGBTQ pushers do, they're not throwing bricks, bottles and sticks like ANTIFA does to people they don't like, etc. Au contraire, M'sieu, THEY have been the TARGET of intolerance for centuries even to this day. And they're just living life the way they like to live it minding their own business, living their own lives, raising their families. Tim W I tend to agree with you somewhat. It depends on how they are raised. It became important to some Hasidim to separate as much as possible from secular life to remain strictly observant and continue cultural traditions. A lot of Jews whether Reformed, Conservative, Orthodox, Ultra Orthodox do some things all Jewish families do such as observe High Holy Days, have challah (cholly) on Shabbos, go to Temple on Shabbos, or speak at least some Yiddish. The more observant do tend to think they are “right” and this can be found in any of the sects but especially Hasidim. I don’t want to disparage their practices, because it is very interesting from a cultural aspect, and they’ve got some good food. That being said, the women in these videos must’ve had some differences in how they were raised to speak so freely about it. The thing about sex and worshipping women isn’t as common as they make it seem. Not all men care to be pleasing their wives, that lady just happens to have a husband who does. Basically to group Jews into one tiny box is wrong. They’re as varied as any population. To deny though that there’s a feeling of superiority though is completely wrong like the person commenting before kind of suggests you are doing. There is that feeling. Do I blame them? Not really. For what Jews have endured is ongoing whether people recognize it or not. There is still a fear of persecution. I feel like that is one reason for this ultra religiousness.

12.18.2016 YUMA I am NOT trying to provoke you. I find it interesting that you are talking about how the LGBTQ population force us to use certain pronouns but tell Tim he is completely wrong about Hasidim. First, it makes you sound like you don’t support the LGBTQ community. Second, it makes you sound like you don’t know much about Hasidim. This IS a positive video, I agree. I do like to see this side shown to educate people, but they aren’t all friendly and open like this. Most that I’ve experienced have been short or standoffish towards me. I came from a Jewish funeral for my FIL in an Ulra Orthodox neighborhood and went into a Kosher place for falafel. I’m completely covered in dark gray and black as the women wear, but I was treated very coldly and suspiciously. Like who is this? I am only a small percentage of Jewish blood and have converted. My kids are Reformed Jews, but since we don’t practice the same, it’s coldness towards us. I am not like that. This is only one example. Do you live near a community? It’s not open like this towards others for the most part. I’m not saying all Hasidim are like this , but based on my experiences they aren’t outwardly friendly overall. There is strife between their community and other Jews due to a feeling of superiority. Sorry but it’s true. The Kyrias Joel community (not the only one doing this) in Orange County had widespread Covid-19 and were not listening to the lockdown advisement stating religious reasons. No religion should be above this. Other Jews are self-isolating and having online temple. I don’t think crimes should be committed against them though. There’s been a rise in NYC of hate crimes against them. This is wrong and part of the reason many keep to themselves. Other religions can be like this also. I feel like they’d obviously rather be around people who understand them and support their lifestyle. I support it as long as women aren’t being oppressed. It seems that some aren’t. My 100% Jewish husband who speaks Yiddish, Hebrew, and observes Shabbos even calls them a cult. Our Orthodox friends call it a cult. You have a right to your opinion and to enjoy this video. I did enjoy it. It’s not so cut and dry as you are stating it and it isn’t as cut and dry as how Tim is stating it. They are not trying to convert us, but they definitely have opinions about us. You may not like some of them.

More than being in touch with their religion, it's being in touch with G-d. And being in touch like that with G-d (through His Word in the Bible, the Torah) guides you from the moment you wake up to the moment you sleep on how you think, how you believe, how you behave, how you relate... Thus, the modesty, the devotion to one another, the discipline, and ultimately, the beauty of it all.

These are not Hassidim they are Mitnagdim/"Satan's Hassidim" - They do not obey/follow the Torah laws... they circumvent all Torah laws in doubletalk. An absolute awesome interresting piece of clip! This should be a a little wake-up call, most won't get mad if you were to ask out of curiosity. Most times where I've reaced out randomly as a non-religous person that is just interrested in all religion. I've gotten answers far beyond my imagination, they are happy to talk about their faith, or lifestyle. As long as you're interrested, and shows it. Talk to everyone, learn and share. Even if you don't share the religous views, knowledge from another human is always a great gift :)

Articulate & eloquent human begins who are also disarmingly warm, they want to protect the precious & have clearly defined what so many have painfully lost in recent generations. The innocence of those darling children made me cry. These communities have a gentleness. As a teacher, I've seen so many crushed children & gentleness & support mend their brokenness. (hope I'm not over-romanticizing!!!).

There will always be a good and beautiful side to things and the not so pretty. It’s about the individuals and the different communities. One cannot be so generative. This documentary shows the beautiful side. The side I admire. But not all is good or bad. There is a lot of gray zone. And, let’s not forget, what the person who is documenting WANTS to show. Let’s not forget about editing.

Ruchama Staples Hi Ruchama, thank you so much for your reply. Yes I know about Rabbi Singer's lecture. It's too late for me, Ruchama, I have already met the Messiah. May I encourage you to read for yourself this chapter and you can see that it is clearly speaking of a man. But not just any man. Yeshua is G-d in the flesh and fulfills every prophecy spoken in the Tanakh. Lev 17:11 There is no remission of sins without the shedding the blood. Yeshua was the final payment ~ the LAMB of G-d!! It's all about the blood like Moses had to put on the doorpost and the death angel passed by ONLY if there was the blood. Ruchama, please ask HA'SHEM to tell you if I speak the truth or not. Are you aware how many Jewish people have come to know their Messiah! We are without hope without believing in HIM. HE, the ONE who loves you and died for you ~ a crucifixion, the worst and most humiliating painful death is coming back soon to judge the nations. @@cnote3598 maybe it is, but calling people fools is pretty harsh... maybe people get different things out of the Talmud than you do, no idea, I can't read Hebrew and no interest in reading it since I'm not Jewish & it's not relevant to my life. But if it interests you knock yourself out.

As a man, orthodox Judaism must be great. As a woman, less so. There are so many things women cannot do, that it's simply not worth it. There's also the whole emphasis on women being unclean and untouchable during their monthly periods that I find hard to accept.

@@tamsinwood2 I am a Orthodox Jewish woman and I am allowed to do whatever I like my husband gives me all the freedom to learn ..work ..and do whatever my heart desires and same is true for all my friends and family...I absolutely would not give up my lifestyle for anything and the part about separating while we have our period is actually amazing for so many reasons i don't even know each one but the reason I personally love it is because it gives us a little space and that is good and when we can be together after being apart I feel like a bride and it's so special and we appreciate each night we can be together even more.. so it just makes it so much more exciting...

My Jewish Victorian English Grandfather David came from an Orthodox Jewish background . He rejected it and married out. In many, many ways he was a Victorian rebel. In many, many ways I do admire Orthodox Hasidic Jews. In London in Stamford Hill the Orthodox Jewish community there is under a kind of siege of hostility. You need to be a strong man or woman to live an Orthodox Jewish life-style. My Grandfather David perhaps was not so strong. He married a Gentile but never converted to his RC wife's religious beliefs. I remember my Grandfather on his death-bed in a hospital. He had suffered a series of strokes over perhaps the last four years of his life and all he did as he died was to stare at the open door of his hospital ward. He was silent.

I am also from English Victorian Jewish rebels. Both my paternal grandparents own grandparents had married out of the faith and disinherited for doing so

Greetings from Poland the cradle of Hasidic religion. Sometimes when Im watching the pictures like on this movie Im thinking about it that my granparents could witness Jews on the streets of Warsaw. Amazing that this world is passed by and at the same time one can see it in the USA.

I have so much love and respect for the Jewish people. My family is not Jewish (we’re conservative Christians) but our daughter is going to be raised with similar values of developing a strong relationship with the Lord, her own great personal value and of dressing modestly, much as how I was raised.

The family father sounds like Christoph Waltz :D
