Stupidly Useful: Dynamic EQ!

Aix just released yet another stupidly useful plugin.... It's an EQ, but it's a compressor at the same time? I take a look at how to apply it to metal production & get some great results! Grab it at: aixdsp.com/dynamiceq/ and try it for 30 days FREE!
Proudly sponsored by AiXDsp because I use their stuff in my day to day productions.
About Spectre Sound Studios:
I'm Glenn Fricker, engineer here at Spectre Sound Studios. I love making records, and after doing it for sixteen years, I want to pass on what I've learned. On my channel you can find tutorials on how to record guitar, bass, real drums and vocals. There's reviews and demos of tube amps, amp sims, drums, mics, preamps, outboard gear, Electric Guitar, Bass Guitar, and plugin effects.
We've covered Moon on the Water, played Bias FX, given you the absolute best in Stupid Musician Texts, ranted & raved about bass guitar, and this channel is where The Eagle has Landed.
Everything you've wanted to learn about recording Hard Rock & Heavy Metal can be found right here on this channel!
I also respond to your comments & questions: The best make it into the SMG Viewer's Comments series of videos. Loads of fun, lots of laughs.
Thanks for checking out my channel & please subscribe!

7:08 the reason it still does something is because the bell curve is wider. The reason the EQ stops at somewhere around 22-24kHz is because you have a signal that is sampled at 44-48kHz and the Nyquist theorem says that half of your sample rate is the highest frequency you can reconstruct.

  • @GoodVolition

In general humans don't hear or experience much above 20kHz. Human hearing cuts off before that. So in theory you really shouldn't notice much by EQing that (there's some stereo phenomena involving higher frequencies). Although it's true a lot of audio machines are designed with sample rates or feedback loops that due to the Nyquist-Shannon Sampling theorem *may* not reliably recreate frequencies above 20kHz. In general you're looking at being able to reliably recreate frequencies at half your recording frequency. However, that is not a guarantee of anything. You may still be able to do so and probably can if you had a pure digital set up. The reality is a lot of A/D converters, recording formats, audio plugins, and audio hardware just straight up filter content in the 20kHz and above region out behind the scenes. I used to work with compressed sensing which is a clever hack to get around that limitation.

Well it's been shown that ultrasonic components do indeed have an effect on perception ("Effects of ultrasonic components on perceived tone quality" Kamada et al., 1989) but when working in mixing, there's so much else going on that it's hard to tell that they're missing (not to mention they're generally very weak!). And ya, you're right that A/D's just completely remove everything above the Nyquist before sending out the digital signal. According to the Nyquist-Shannon Sampling Theorem, you literally cannot represent frequencies above fs/2.

Specifically stagg, I have heard sonically there's no difference when dealing with very short runs, and that the difference comes with durability and interference. I personally need quite a few 3m cables for recording drums and would be a heck of a lot cheaper. I also will not have any chargers or anything near the cables so interference should be okay? Check out the dynamic link function i.e. link two instances on two different tracks and when you boost a frequency on one track the 'linked' track automatically reduces the same frequency by the same amount, pretty cool for defining layered guitars or separating overlapping instruments. p.s. a lot of overtones/sustain youre getting from that snare. i would personally try and control that by using either dampening gels, or using an aquarian focus-x with power dot pre-muffled head, then you may be able to get rid of some of that honk and bring the snare tone under control, but thats just me :)

I swear i was designing something like this in my mind like a month ago. I was using multiple child tracks and assign them eq's and compressors individually for every single resonant peak so they are dimmed only when i 'play them'. this thing exactly does it with zero hustle. O M fucking Gawd......

  • @soundman1402

Nyquist theory: The highest frequency that can be reproduced by a digital audio system (PCM, anyway) is half its sample rate; at 44.1k, that means your maximum frequency is 22.05 kHz. If you feed higher frequencies than that to an A/D converter, you'll get aliasing (lower-frequency representation of that input), which sounds really weird and completely unrelated to the audio you input into it. So, A/D converters have a Nyquist filter that rolls off audio on the way in, just ahead of the max frequency. There's no point in trying to EQ frequencies above that frequency because they won't be there.

I just recently learned how to do most of that on Reaper ReaEQ. It's got it's own odd way of setting up sidechaining even on plugins that don't natively have it but it certainly works. Something occurred to me though. The crowding in the top end, you said? I mean, could we get rid of that by just omitting the high pass filter - or, maybe put a high shelf in there? Can't try that out just now as I'm rendering a ton of MP3's from one project (don't ask why I have a ton of songs in one project. Please. Just don't. :) ) I'm a damn cheapskate hobbyist so I look for all kinds of fun workarounds.

@@themetalicarus0284 Personally I mix through a pair of Maag EQ4s. The insert sound alone adds value. I recently sold a Shadow Hills Dual Vandergraph because it was too colorful to be useful on every master buss, for now the master is my only concern when using hw. I’m looking at the Wes Audio stuff because of the recallability while having that gluey sound I’m looking for. The SSL you just purchased was top of my list until I discovers Wes Audio, I work on many projects at once so that recall is paramount. Still though that GComp sounds bonkers. Congrats! 🎉🎊🍾

What's the difference between a dynamic Eq and multi-band compressor? They seem very similar

  • @MyNameIsBucket

A multiband compressor might only handle a handful of frequency ranges and won't actually control the final volume directly. These plugins simply let you carve the entire response.
