The new Maserati Levante Trofeo is a pedigree SUV from makers Maserati with a massive automotive heritage. The Trofeo gets a Ferrari 3.8-litre, twin-turbo petrol V8 that produces 580 bhp. In launch mode, engaged by selecting the Sport Corsa switch on the central console, you’re catapulted from 0- 62 mph in just 4.1 seconds, so foot-hard-down, means masses of overtaking power. All traction is handled by Maserati’s Q4 Intelligent All-wheel-drive system, enabling you to take the Levante Trofeo at some silly speeds along tight, twisty roads, without straying from your lane. The steering reveals the car’s heftiness, but in the correct way, which is to say that it is never a burden but it’s feeding you proper real time information.
With its distinctly Italian styling, the Maserati Levante Trofeo is full of drama and machismo. All of this though comes with an eye-wateringly high price tag with options that you will find difficult to pronounce, however, it’s loud, it grabs attention, and in a lot of ways the 2022 Maserati Levante Trofeo is the perfect driving enthusiast’s SUV.
Originally introduced in 2016, the 2022 Maserati Levante is a mid-sized luxury SUV. Bigger than the new Maserati Grecale, it was also the brand’s first SUV. In 2021 Maserati gave it a mid-cycle refresh, giving it revised front and rear fascias, some driver-assistance tech, and an updated infotainment interface. Otherwise, the car isn’t that different from when it first debuted six years ago. The few giveaway signs that this is the performance version of the Levante is the black piano finish to the grille, a lower front splitter, bonnet vents, body-coloured door handles, and red highlights for the faux air inlets on the front guards and a red strip through the trident badge. It also has full matrix LED headlights that provide 20 per cent more visibility over standard Bi-Xenon lights. The Levante Trofeo uses a digital camera behind the rear-view mirror, which allows the driver to keep the high beam on without dazzling oncoming vehicles.
There's a 17-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium surround sound system as standard and the car supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, there are a few other minor tweaks over the regular Levante S trim, including a matte carbon fibre weave on the dash, paddle shifters, as well as an 21cm touchscreen that recognises drag, scroll, swipe and rotate gestures.
The Levante Trofeo goes against the current thinking of where the industry is going with downsizing and electrification, but it stands as the model in the Maserati range that is most likely to put a smile on your face when you hit the start button.
