Studying Indo-European (Resources for Learners)

Books that a student of Indo-European languages should be aware of, with special attention to a few of interest to those intrigued by the history of the Germanic languages (like English and the Scandinavian languages).

Been studying Old Irish and Modern Gaelic by David Stifter a Ph.D. professor at the University of Vienna and Chairman of the _Austrian Society for Celtic Studies_ and Jonathan Evans text and _An Introduction to Old English_ and I have some books on Welsh, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, Hittite and Gothic. Right now I've decided to stick with Irish and focus my attention to Old French by E. Einhorn and William W. Kibler. Really want to learn Old French in addition to learning Old Irish and Modern Irish. Definitely want to add the first text you showed to my Library though.

I have a book "A Grammar of Modern Indo-European" by Quiles & Lopez-Mencheros. This is more an amateur work (by "amateur" I mean "enthusiast") than something by strict academic standards, and I thought I'd mentioned it because it's cheap and even freely downloadable from the internet. The book attempts to reconstruct an Indo-European language and grammar based on I'd say a somewhat European centric take on PIE. The authors surely take quite a few liberties in doing so, but I've found the authors' project interesting still. Much should probably be taken with a grain of salt, but it gives some insights into Indo-European languages. What they present is likely not a language that was actually spoken, but something that would be fairly well understood by PIE speakers, perhaps. Kind of what Ivar Aasen did with Norwegian but with Indo-European instead.

In the most recent edition the author states that it’s Eurocentric by design. They were attempting to make a post Hittite split, post laryngeal drop language from what I remember. The author envisions it as a neutral European Union language which is a pretty idea but I think most diplomats won’t have any interest in it.

These books sound awesome but like all academic books they are very pricey. Its hard for me to justify a $45-60 book for a hobby. This is why those 2 hour long videos you do with Dr. Yates are so important, it is getting this knowledge out there for free.

Thanks for making these vids. As an American of South Asian (Indian) descent, I find the subject of PIE subject matter fascinating. The Indian body politik would have one believe that Sanskrit and “Indian culture/Sanatana Dharma” came from India. Your videos are part of a knowledge-base which needs to be elucidated and expounded upon, and brought to more common knowledge, much like Egyptian culture and civilization has.

Also it's a separate language from the West Norse group together with Norwegian(not Bokmål), Icelandic, and Faroese. It being a "Swedish dialect" is propaganda from the Swedish Government. Swedish is part of the East Norse group with Danish, and arguably Norwegian Bokmål.
