Study in America - 5 Things You Will Love & Hate About Studying Abroad in the USA
www.woltersworld.com
Thousands of students come to study in the USA every year. Here are the best & worst parts of studying abroad in America, from high prices and students not wanting to work with you, but the great parties and fun people make up for it.

I like how you filmed this at various campuses!
There are plenty of major American universities in Cities. All the Boston Schools, Columbia, NYU, UPenn, John Hopkins, GWU, Georgetown, Emory, Northwestern, U of Chicago, Washington U in St. Louis, U of Texas, Berkeley, U of Washington, UCLA, USC, Tulane, and many more. It's perfectly possible to study in a major city in the U.S. if you want.
This is such an awesome video. Can't believe I just discovered it. 😀 Even though it is a bit dated, Mark should definitely link this in the Dx box of all of his future videos. Answers a few common questions from all of his new subscribers. And it's a great discussion of college life in the US. Love university towns. Have been to Knoxville and Athens but need to get to Oxford one day. Want to experience The Grove on game day. 🏈👍
this a great video mark, thanks! Im American but its nice to hear
The biggest bummer about studying in the US is the inability to fix your mistakes. You screwed up once? Too bad! Cause that one failed course will haunt you for the rest of your life.

NotOrdinaryInGames Who cares?! Do your best, then don't worry. No regrets. I am old now, but i can tell you that I was a big worrier when I was young, and it availed me nothing good. My biggest regret is that I didn't have more sex when I could still get it up. lol Life does have its consolations, however. I love to travel, and the advent of the internet rendered boredom all but non-existent for me. I'm old now, and I know myself, I "know the score," I know the limits to my personal power. And the most important thing: A wise man once said that "Love is the Greatest." That is so true. I believe in the power of love and kindness. Happiness is a great good, and I did something when I was young that most folks in the English-speaking realm do not do, and that was to learn to speak fluent German. What's the connection to happiness? The German-speaking area has a genre of music that is all but unknown in the Anglosphere, and that is the Volkstümliche. It's FUN ! Who cares if it's "square?!" Waltzes, Polkas, Laenders, Yodlers, etc. It's all good. The Schnulzen sung by Heintje. It's all there on the net, on KZread. Forget about what folks think and get into the postive, life-affirming music of this kind. Also, hiking songs, which some call marching music. It's all fun. And happifying. Try it. You'll like it. Cheers! 11.5.15

Claudia Marin Everyone has an accent now. Even modern day English people have one (and there are several ACCENTS within the country) because they don't speak like whatever is considered original English from years ago. All English people speak with a different accent and dialect compared to "original" English (just like Americans and other English speakers from various countries). English people definitely DO have accents.

Great! that is the infomation I need!!
Fantastic video!! In our country, our study is based on mem0orization skill, but USA teaches practical things that is so cool. Actually i am getting bored as i require memorizing lots of materials before each exam. I do not wanna memorize those sheets blindly. :( Now, I am considering to study in US.
Go vols! Honored you came to visit us haha
I'm going through the process now of choosing where in the US to study in my third year, and Tennessee at Knoxville is one I could potentially end up at, so this was really helpful. Thanks very much

You forgot to mention that the overall academic/theoretic/scientific level (at least for undergraduate studies) ist extremely low! It's ridiculously easy compared to Germany. Though you have to work a lot more regularly, which i found to be very exhausting! I was shocked when i spent my exchange semester at UMass! Greetings from Germany (Chemical Engineer)
@woltersworld

Hmmm. I teach at the University of Illinois and I think their Engineering might be a bit tougher :) but I do understand what you mean, but did you come during your diplom or vordiplom? and I feel that the abitur prepares germans WAY more than US highschools. think of year 1 or 2 of college in the US is basically your abitur or last year of gymnasium
@feelinggrape
10 жыл бұрын
I came during my Diplom and it was not comparable at all! Much more experiments and stuff (in Germany it does get pretty practical if you finished your vordiplom), but way way less calculating tough mathematical things. Therefore my grades were really good ( don't think/hope I got any foreign bonus!) I found it pretty easy! Not meaning to destroy college reputation or something though !!

oh no worries, undergrad studies in the US are pretty easy. Masters programs are a bit different, it depends on the major really. I feel Germany has one of the best university education systems around, I did my masters/diplom in germany
@matthewhall1597

What do you mean by "level?" Why isn't there a German Apple, Google, Facebook, Intel, Amazon, IBM, GE, etc.?
@feelinggrape
7 жыл бұрын
Matthew Hall because there are Companies like Siemens, Daimler, Volkswagen and Thyssen, whose value on the stock market very often doesn't even add up to their capital in machines and personell? You can't really compare IT companies to anything really. Compare GM mechanical engineers to Silicon Valley it-guys. Plus: because high level education in the US is superior (because money and clever people from all over the world). But let me tell you for undergrad: definitely not since it is very often not much more than many Germans have in their Abitur. Post-Grad: different story. But again: different system.
The 4th point (love) - what you are talking about is called "Fachhochschule" or "TU" Universities (in general) are more into theory
In france we have a lot of different options after high school but when you go to business school or engineer school it's kind of the same than your americans universities, there are parties, clubs, campus, sometimes the school has his own newspaper or radio.

wish you would have wrote me a month ago when I was in Germany :) hates: professors don't care about you, class doesn't matter, exam is almost the entire grade, no recourse for bad professors, very academic and not enough practical teaching. loves you don't have to go to class, very thorough theoretical background, lots of travel opportuntities

German here. The most important pros: No tuition fees and you are very free in organizing your studies. Cons: In most cases there are only finals, either you pass or fail and getting good grades is often hard, even if you work hard for it. The university does not care about you. E.g. nobody reminds you to register for exams, your professors do not care if you attend lecture or know your name... Actual student housing as in other countries (run by university itself) is nonexistent, universities do not care where you stay. There are dormitories run by student unions, but capacities account for only ~10% of German students. Most either commute from their parents house or live in shared flats. Academically it is often hard and tends to be more theory-focused (especially undergrad studies). High failure rates in certain exams (especially in undergrad studies) are part of the system, nobody pushes professors to take measures to lower failure rates.
Go Vols!!! Class of 2010:)
... Sir , just want to know ... If you kindly make a video on going Australia and All the good things about it and also the bad things ? It would be really magnificent to hear that .... :) . If there is an existing video ... please reffer us to that
I'm brazilian and I'm graduating this year in Chemical Engineering. I've been thinking in doing a post-graduation at USA because it's more easy to find the kind of course i'm looking for than other countries. But watching your video was like a slap to the face. Don't get me wrong, the vid is incredibly informative as always, but all those things about extra costs for exchange students and the "US students will not want to work with you" and the restricted classes really disappointed me. Here in Brazil a foreign student has the same number of rights and costs as any native and he/she is treated for his competence instead of his origin. I don't know if these characteristics you said works the same for post-graduation, but If they are... Guess I'll Just have to search for another country. Thank you as always
This video was amazing ! Wow, it seems that US teachers are way cooler than French. I'm so excited to go there next year to study abroad but it's kind of expensive so... still thinking of how i'm going to pay all that. x)
Just a head's up, yes, education is so expensive. In places like Denmark for example, people are surprised at how burned out college students are and how fast people complete their degrees. For me it was mostly because of the money and the pressure on getting good grades. I didn't want to pay for another expensive year of school by changing my degree, so I had to keep my nose to the grind for only few years. So keep that in mind if you come to study here, you'll probably work like crazy.
OMG you teached in Lithuania, I'm from there but currently live in UK.

I love this channel! But, I would prefer to work with the foreign exchange students vs the locals. Local kids don't seem to work as hard. However I'm a 35 year old hippie who makes straight A's at a community college. Community colleges seem to have a lot of students who don't seem to care if they get the best grades. So that is probably different than a university.

Mark, do you get paid much to be able to afford these travels? I am a high school teacher and also travel a lot during breaks (Thanksgiving, Summer, Spring) but only have 2 weeks Christmas break. However, the county system I teach at pays enough for me to afford to travel, even on long weekends. I taught college as an adjunct and when I asked my mentor about teaching full time, his advise was to stay with the public school system for financial reasons.

Do you have a video on HOW study abroad all works. Our daughter is finishing up her 1st year in college. She is interested in study abroad in Spain. After she gets her AA here at SCF she will transfer to UF for the anthropology program. We don't know ANYTHING about study abroad. Is this something one goes through the college? Since she will be finishing up at SCF next May does she go through UF(the next college) OR does study abroad have nothing to do with the college you go to? Can you point us in the right direction as to what steps we should take...baby steps...1.2.3. I'm hoping you have a video on this. Thank you! Melody PS What do you teach?

+Living Free Forever If you want to get college credit you generally do it through the college you attend, normally your college will have information on their website. There is also normally a office you can visit on campus, and information meetings held during the year for students and parents who are interested. it differs between college to college, but generally the school already has a partnership with other colleges overseas, and you get to pick from a list where you want to go, for a semester, a summer, or a week or two ( normally only get credit for one class, vs a semester where you get credit for multiple classes). If you want to go somewhere else you normally can but you will have to pay that schools tuition ( normally you just pay your home schools tuition while overseas) and you will have to check to see if your credits will transfer. while your tuition will be the same (if going to a partner school) you normally have to pay for the airfare, food, spending money, and sometimes rent on your own in addition to tuition. If you want to study abroad using a different program than your school you can but it may be more or less money, and you may not get college credit, check with your school before signing up to see if they will give credit.

how to answer these questions. why you want to study in US? why you choose to study in Alabama state? why you select Jacksonville State University for studying?
I'm so jealous of low tuition universities in other countries. It's hella expensive here, even more so when going to an out-of-state university. UT Austin is TWICE the price for students traveling from out-of-state than within Texas, which will then be about $50,000 a year. Student debt is a serious thing. Screw college experience, I rather pay less than pay about $30,000 for schooling a year. And that's public schools. Private universities/colleges are way more expensive.

Dear woltersworld, My name is Jioh (pronounced like 'Geo' in the word geography). I was just wondering I am currently studying in England, United Kingdom (UK) but I am interested to study abroad as an exchange student in the United states next year so quite soon, but is there any support actually benefit for disabled students/ people with disability not just physical but also problems such as dyslexia, epilepsy, hearing problems, cognitive problems and so on at American universities? I know in England they offer extra time for example for exams or extra help in accommodation and so on, also help in somewhat such as note taking or some extra help in getting around from the university people/ staff. I was wondering also in universities in England they have a specific department for disabled students. Do American universities offer any similar support for people who come from abroad or is it not available or if it is available is it only available for people in the US?

+Tom H YES many, if not all ( except maybe really small ones) colleges in the US has department dedicated to helping students with mental, physical, and learning disabilities. You get extra help in class, extra time, emailed notes/slides, councilors, and/or what ever else you might need a little help with. it's very common here and totally normal so your professors will be familiar with it too.

You forgot a bit about the small town bit: In North America, you pretty much HAVE to have a car. Public transportation in most of these "small towns" is either -existent, but limited to the area(s) around the university. -Nonexistent entirely. Better hope your university knocks your tuition down to the point where you can get your hands on a car, or you know somebody who has a car and can drive you around. Even if you have a bike, most bicycles rented to college students are of low quality, and most bikes within a students' budget will usually be cheap. (And while this isn't true of every university in America, certain places happen to have a bit of a problem with bike theft so riding in with a brand new top-of-the-line bicycle is like riding in with a huge "Steal me" sign.) Not only that, but during the fall and spring semesters, it gets FUCKING COLD out here so you will have to be certifiably insane if you try to ride that bicycle around. (If you're from the Nordic&Alpine countries, or Russia, then you know this very well.) Most bike trails, if they exist, aren't plowed, so you will be forced to ride your bike on the road, and you will have to bundle up. This may cause your clothes to get caught in the chain due to the aformentioned cheap bikes. When you arrive at your destination, you will be absolutely drenched in sweat from riding your bike in layers of clothing and a heavy winter coat. (Assuming you don't have frostbite from the wind chill - which can be as low as -70.) You can always get a moped, and get to park that for free since a lot of universities allow Mopeds to be parked on the bike racks (which costs nothing) and you may not even need a bike lock at all since mopeds need a key to get going. HOWEVER: You can't ride them on bike trails, you can't ride them on sidewalks, and you cant' ride them in bike lanes, you have to ride them in the road. Their maximum speed is way lower than the speed limit in most areas so you WILL piss off the drivers. And if you're in Texas, even if you go at the speed limit, you WILL get run down. If you decide to stay in the summer, you will absolutely BOIL especially if you're pretty far inland. Yes, even in Canada and Alaska, which have a reputation as being freezing.

It really depends on what part of the country you are in. I go to school in a small town in upstate NY (oswego), and we have buses for the students on campus that run not just all over the town, but also to events, festivals, shopping malls, as well as to "bigger" cities like Syracuse, which from there you can take a bus or train to pretty much anywhere else in the state from NYC, to Buffalo. They even go up to Canada. We also have Zip cars on campus the students cant rent, and a number of various taxi companies in the area. It's all based on the university/town/part of the country your at in particular.

Hi! I am from Malta, a tiny island near Italy and currently majoring in Accountancy and Banking &Finance at the University of Malta. I`m studying for my 2nd year Finals right now, but I still have three years to go. As you said, over here in Malta, for most of the study units, us students, choose not to go to the lectures as the lecturers don`t brighten up the lectures so we just study the notes provided. I would love to experience a more practical study someday. I have an uncle who lives in Detroit and will be visiting this Summer. I would love to study in the USA someday! Do you have any tips regarding my area of study? Thank you for all your helpful videos! :)

KIM Study in accounting at any university, it almost doesn't matter however after that sit for the CPA exam. That is recognized all over the USA (and in many parts of the world) as a mark of achievement. It is by far the most prestigious accomplishment you can have in the USA.

I'm a CPA in the US. Generally here you do 4 years of business school then 1 year Master of Accounting (MAcc) to be eligible to sit for the CPA exam. A third of my class at Ohio State (only a few hours south of Detroit by car) was international students. They loved it and many of them got jobs with Big 4 accounting firms and stayed in the US. If you're interested in a MAcc, I recommend looking and applying a year before you'd start (most are one year full time starting in August).

***** I can't really say :( sorry... but usually engineering type fields help
that man speaks pretty fast, but nevertheless i do understand him. i've studied at english prep.school for 6 months. What do you think, am i ready for the USA?)
woltersworld sir, i humbly ask you one question, i am doing my phd in india and i plan to study post doctorate in california university, From my childhood, i am passionate about hollywood movies, it is possible and legal to work par time in hollywood ( any type of job, even lightsman job) while i doing postdoc in cali. Does college give permission to me?
I completely disagree with your point about the 'US college experiece that you don't get anywhere'. Here in england nearly all universities have hundreds of societies ranging from sports, baking, harry potter and many many more. The student night life if great and the overall student experience is excellent. So i just wanted to point out that the great university experience isnt exclusive to US universities.
hey Wolter im from Vienna ( Austria ) and i absolutly love america. Is there a way to study and live in america after i finished the Higher Technical College in Vienna ? Or would it be better to study in Vienna and then move to america ? But like you've said i think i would miss the college experience.

I think it depends what your specialization is, if you are a fachhochschule like in Germany you "probably" could find something, but it won't be easy, but again it depends what your degree is in
