Merging is great for applying real time plugins to a merged clip instead of loading plugins in a track. Another great feature is that you can merge clips from different tracks. Pretty useful for phase-sensitive stuff (multitracked drums, etc)

Thanks for this. I was grouping all these clips but then I couldn’t change the volume and fade ins etc. I’ve found bouncing to be a far better solution for me. There’s also a lot of benefits to making a decision and committing to it!

I always Bounce - and if I want to print with FX I use Bounce To New Track. I am old school from analog days and prefer destructive editing and decisions made. The original file is still in the Pool so you can go back.

There is definitely something to be said for commitment. At least mentally declaring "ok, that's done, I'm not going back to tweak that."

hmmm ya, the "pool', perhaps a quick tutorial on its ins and outs, some file management tips like "remove unused files" and , for me, why do some files suddenly have weird little green symbols? whoa i'd best check the list, you may have done one already😎 @@studioonerevealed

Thanks! Another great video that gets right to the point and delivers clear, relevant information. I'll have to give merging another look as I've generally preferred bouncing. It's definitely possible to combine the two methods. In this example, the clip with Melodyne applied could be bounced on its own (not to a new track) then merged/grouped with the others. Again, though, bouncing is destructive so be doubly sure that it's what you want before proceeding.

In StudioOne 5 it's handled in "EVENTS" - You can group events with "G", But "Shift+G" is assingned to Groups. What I found is "Dissolve Events" to restore the edited Parts eg. Events a non destructive way.

Thanks for the excellent information! I've got only 4 songs under my belt , and have learned the hard way about dealing with "ghosts" of Melodyne still residing in a track, and how to remove them. My biggest lesson is to not Melodyne anything until I have everything where I want it, and am ready to add other effects and mix it.

I’m learning all this stuff for the first time and about to get to a point in my song that I anticipate using Melodyne. If you’ve got time would you be able to describe more about the “ghosts” that reside in a track? In case I encounter that issue I’d like to know that’s what the problem is instead of chasing down wrong guesses. Thanks!

@@glenq6233 I know this is an older post, but I'll chime in just in case you haven't discovered "ghosts" yet. They're unwanted sounds, artifacts, tonal changes, additions that Melodyne will sometimes create in its process of attempting to identify and adjust the pitch of notes. They can be all over the place, too, so there isn't one thing specifically to listen for. Instead, look for stuff that wasn't present in the original. Melodyne is an amazing tool and quite often works quite transparently, so this isn't meant to be an indictment of the product. My workflow with Melodyne is to use it as sparingly as possible, in general. When adjustments are necessary, I usually isolate that part of the track (usually splitting it before and after the point in question) so that Melodyne's processing engine isn't "touching" more than it needs to. I also prefer to make only hand corrections and the absolutely minimum adjustment necessary to get the job done. The more you ask Melodyne to do, the more you're at risk of significant tonal quality changes and ghosting. Still, there are times when ghosts show up. In this case, I will often try re-detecting or trying a different algorithm. The one chosen automatically isn't always the best for a given clip. From there, tweak in small increments until you get what you want, ghost free, being ready with the Undo in case one shows up. Your mileage may vary, but this technique has worked for me.

So that was the reason why i wasn't able to speed up (timestretch) merged clips 🤯

  • @UDMechE

The issue I’ve run into with the “shared copies” recently is that I made a change to a clip that I had copied earlier from a different part of the song, it’s out of view, and all of a sudden changes I’m making in one part of the song are unknowingly affecting clips later on in the song and I don’t realize its happening.
