Students perform Haka to mourn victims of Christchurch shooting

Students from different schools in Christchurch performed a Haka dance to honour the victims of the mosque shootings. At least 50 people died when a gunman opened fire during afternoon prayers.

    Yes, this always amazed me. Seeing white people mixed with "maori" shaped faces doing the haka gives me chills. Watching them doing that before a match of a sport (rugby) brought by the english, but where the maori colture fits so well, is something overwhelming and special. Much love to those people from Italy.

    I find the Haka to be a window into how powerfully and emotionally connected the Maori culture is. A cultural community openly, boldly, and profoundly expressing the deepest of human emotion as a unit is a humbling reminder of what it means to be human. The Maori are doing it right. The day their culture is lost is the day that humanity loses it’s soul. May they always thrive! God this was hard to watch.

  • @SabakaJunglay

    @SabakaJunglay

    3 жыл бұрын

    @Josef H. The religion developed during wartime, because the first Muslims were attacked and tried to defend themselves. The war is chronicled in parts of the Holy texts. This would be like if a new religion was being formed in Poland just as Hitler's army was invading it. If that happened, there might be passages talking about attacking Germans, but that wouldn't make the religion anti-German. Islam teaches that all of the human race is one family and encourages Muslims to get to know people from other backgrounds and to see other people as brothers and sisters. Discrimination against non-Muslims is prohibited, as is racism. After the war ended, with the Muslims fleeing to Mecca, Muhammad rose to political power but never used his power to retaliate against Jews and Christians for the war. Under Muhammad, there was religious freedom and interreligious harmony in Mecca. It's okay to have questions, or disagree with part of a text, or part of a religion, or to dislike aspects of a religion, but ultimately, religion is between you and God, and every individual has their own journey. This is why making blanket statements about a religious community doesn't work. There are controversial passages in any religion. But by all means, if you prefer not to practice a religion, feel free, that is your journey.

    I concur with Moana Chase. Haka, at least war Haka, aren't really performed anymore to intimidate-- the one exception being the All Blacks NZ rugby team that perform it before a match. But yes, Haka are performed for many special occasions; funerals, weddings, graduations, birthdays, etc.

Watching this video is yet another example of the true humanity that exists behind the mask of hatred and vindictive politics. To the youth of Christchurch who reached across cultural lines to offer comfort, honor and respect to those affected, I can only say may God richly bless you. To those injured, or who lost loved ones in the attack, may you find peace and know that your community loves you, and others around the world love and pray for you as well.
