Jason was definitely reluctant to learn theory for many years because of the following reasons:
- He thought it would hurt his sound and creativity
- He was afraid it would be obscure and useless in practice
- He thought it would take 10 years to really understand…
6 months later, Jason understood that in reality:
- His sound was improved and so was his creativity thanks to the new options and insights brought by his new understanding of music
- Theory was incredibly practical SPECIFICALLY for writing and composing
- It took him… well… 6 months, not 10 years.
Like I always say: if theory was this long and difficult science to make sense of and/or if it was useless, I would not spend my life recommending that guitarists, even amateurs, learn its secrets.
But having guidance and methodology is very important. If you try to understand everything on your own, then yes… it will take 10 years, you won’t see the use and you will never get out of your rut.
