I blame the parents for not monitoring their children properly. You have online portal to view the grades. I understand that the school did not follow proper protocols, however it’s the son fault 100%. Mom or Dad can’t pass your grades it’s your responsibility as a kid to pass and do your homework. She’s acting like she’s the victim. He could have been truthful about failing and not attempting anything. This is why America is failing behind academics.

Honestly, everyone is to blame. The school obviously has the most bum ass teachers who just let him progress in hopes that he might get better, the mother doesn't even know what a progress/report card is (including a website where you can see your kid's grades), and the student has skipped almost half of his entire high school years and expected to graduate. How did the police not get involved? Idk what laws exist inside the district, but oh man they really need to get their act together. For them to be this soft is unacceptablly unthinkable. I hope his life gets better, but there's a good chance that he'll probably become a drug dealer later in life.

I’m a teacher. There is next to nothing we can do about students being absent for classes. The best thing we can do is call parents at home and be like “Hey Mr/Mrs ----, we notice your son/daughter hasn’t been to school recently. Is everything okay?” Police might occasionally get involved, but especially in poorer urban areas it can be very difficult to get kids to school, since they have a lot of other problems they need to deal with. So either the school wasn’t informing her that her son literally missed and entire years worth of classes, or she didn’t have enough power/control to make him go to school. Neither is a good indication. Plus, a student with that many absences, I guarantee that even when he is in school, he’s definitely not doing the assignments or the tasks.

I experienced this same thing back in 94'. The no child left behind policy makes things worse. You have no incentive to do anything if failure doesn't exist. Especially if you're a young man that doesn't know what to do in life. It wasn't until my "5TH" year of high school did I realize that this was my last year and can fail out of high school. That's when I turned my life around. But my driver's Ed teacher tried to fail me even though I aced every test. That asshole refused to believe I knew the material. So I didn't get the news until GRADUATION DAY. So I had go back to the school to talk to him and take a quickie test to prove how much of an asshole he is.

My mother was a single parent raising 3 kids and she always made sure to check our report card, go to parent teacher conferences, go to every open house, and seeking programs that would help us excel. There was a brief time were we hid our report cards because we weren't doing well and we wanted to avoid another lecture and grounding. She quickly figured it out. Not only were we grounded but she ensured the report cards were received only under her signature. She even went to the school to get copies of the report cards we hid. That lady has no excuse. Has enough time to do a news interview but not to march herself to her son's school to get a progress report.

I'd divide the blame by 40/60, the school is 40 since they failed to inform anyone of the kid's absences and failures and is ass in communication. While the 60 is towards the kid and the parents, the parents for failing to raise him right and monitor his academic performances, and the kid for basically being a goofy goober for not taking his school seriously
