Stuck with old Venus OS!!! Easy upgrade, Ruuvi Tag, Shutdown Button, GuiMods (finally)

Ғылым және технология

This is something which bothered me for quite a while: my Raspberry Pi was still running an old version of Victron Venus OS. It refused to update and never downloaded a newer version at some point. It was stuck in the past!
Tonight (yes, another late night show) I'm finally updating this old beast to the newest Victron OS and also install the Ruuvi temperature sensor, Kevin's Setup Helper and some more upgrades.
As always, I show all this step by step so, if you're stuck in the past with your Venus OS, just follow this video guideline.

This is magic Andy! Right now, today, I took my SD-card out of my Raspy with Venus-OS because I tried to setup a bluetooth Mopeka gas sensor and it didn‘t work!! Now I know why - because I haven‘t the latest firmware! You made my day (again and repeatedly)! Thanks a lot.

Elejoy is nice to have so you can test your solar panels but it can be difficult sometimes to see in the sunlight with the new but with the other screen you could see it pretty good whether you was in sunlight or not. So hopefully people that test their solar panels with one of these Elejoy can get behind the solar panels with a little bit of shade so they can see the screen a little bit better. One thing I would recommend is unplug the power before removing the SD card. Victron makes great components, even when running on third-party hardware. The Ruuvi is interesting. Putty (ssh) is nothing I would use a third party installer for, but I have also been doing Unix administration since the 1980s. I can see the benefit for normal people. I am glad to see they finally support the bluetooth and wifi of the newer Pis. They didn't used to (last time I checked, admittedly when they first released a Pi with built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi).

  • @OffGridGarageAustralia

I think the Pi is already powered down but the LED is still on. With the newer Venus versions, they made the OS partition read only unless the system updates. Obviously, the 2.66 I was running does nto do that and I had it corrupted before. BT is working since version 2.89 (I think). Yeah, finally, they fixed and implemented that.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia Yeah Andy - get the Android ruuvi station app. On the top right is a gear wheel settings button. You can enable or disable all 4 sensors as you wish. You can see the readings anywhere through the pi or cerbo, but obviously through the app it's only local through Bluetooth. There is a ruuvi gateway, which is expensive and why would you want it when it's attached to your pi already. Anyway - it's in the ruuvi station app you enable or disable the sensors. I don't think you can do it through the venus os, unless that's included in a future software update.

Your always full of good info Andy, & I haven’t gone there yet, but if I was to buy a Cerbo GX, would there be a reason, want or need to have a raspi as well? What r the main benefits of the raspi setup? My PowMr 12v balancer (same as yours) just arrived 2 days ago, I also have a 48v model with 4 sets of wires that can supposedly be configured for 12,24,36 & 48v battery setups (Not used as yet), I am actually going to use the 24v balancer on 2 x 16v Maxwell Caps in series near the inverter for a 24v lipo4 system, to see if It will help keep the caps balanced better, I wonder what you intend to do with your new balancer??? I also have the 800w Elejoy, its a bit hard to read in the sun but works ok so far. Cheers

The Pi does the same as the Cerbo, it is just cheaper. The major benefit of the Cerbo GX is that it is plug'n play and all the ports around it are already isolated. With the Pi, it needs a bit more work and scripting to make this all work and is more messy around it with all the extra adapters you would need.

Whaaaaaaat - was exactly what i said when the Music kicked in. Randomly came across this vid searching for exactly the same issue, VenusOS 2.66. After recently updating my Broadcast Van from an EasySolar 12/1600/30 to an EasySolar 24/3000/70 - meant the 1600 was available to use in the Garage, prodominately as a Backup for Server equipment that at the moment runs off 3 seperate UPS' that are Horrible and only give a few minutes of run time. Compared to now having the 300A LifePo4 from the Van in here (because I built a seperate 24v280Ah Battery Kit for the Van.) Long story still going - yeah it means the Pi I had as the VRM for the 12v system is now in use for, well the same system, but needs some updates, particularly since I can't update the Multi-Plus itself at the moment as it can't be updated by such an old VENUS version.

I know victron can do this through a meter sensor but victron want over £2300 for everything to use ESS and I'm sure I don't need everything they say

Can victron be configured when to feed-in to grid from battery? I want to get a victron multiplus II however there is one must have feature I can't confirm for my automation needs. I am on amber electric which gives different rates for feed in according to the wholesale power price, I need an inverter capable of exporting power from a battery to the grid when I program it to. I have already made a few python programs with the amber API to turn various things on and off according to price so that part is not a problem, need to know if Victron can be told when to feed in to the grid.

  • @OffGridGarageAustralia

    @OffGridGarageAustralia

    Жыл бұрын

No inverter does feed in power from your battery as far as I know. That would make no sense. The inverter/charger will use solar power to power your loads first, excess goes into your battery. If the battery us full and there is still excess energy from solar, it will feed this power back to the grid, if you have a feed-in contract in place.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia Tesla powerwall and LG Resu both can do this in combination with amber smart switch, I want to find a DIY solution so I can use my own battery presumably at a much lower cost per kwh than a Tesla powerwall. An example of how this works is... On a sunny day with plenty of wind I can buy power at maybe 10cents/kwh or less in the middle of the day off peak. Then when the evening comes and power is nearly 40cents/kwh I can sell some of my stored energy back to the grid for a higher feed-in rate than if I had solar on the house generating in the middle of the day.

@@HAZZA24937 Yeah, I understand the concept of a virtual power plant. But is this allowed to do and is it still a DIY project? I know some people having an agreement with their retailer to sell power from their battery back to the grid during peak times for a lot of money. $4-$7/kWh I heard of... @@OffGridGarageAustralia I'm not 100% sure if it is allowed in Australia or not yet, some countries it is but you don't always get paid. Could not believe that Victron is leaving their customers so behind with a system that is no longer supported and looks like lost. I am not a Victron customer for some other reasons , miss some features but got a working system with manufacturer support and at least 10 year of warranty which Victron does no offer for their parts and inverters. So it was an easy choice and I am also in the eco system and app world of the inverter manufacaturer due to canbus support and now I am running the DIY lifepo in their system as it would look and act as the inverter manufacturers battery. Of cause I lost flexibility and scalability but also got the inverters a lot cheaper: 10 kw with up to 14 kWp and a 4,7 kW Hybrid 48V system for 2650€ incl. 10 year warranty and domestic support At the end some things are not possible but with not so much benefits, but world wide app and browser support to charge the battery or EV in different priority if needed. But pretty great explanation about the update progress and start from scratch even though I hate to see abandoned like this. So we can only wish RIP 2.66 - left behind and forgotten.
