Apparently you can attempt to repair a malfunctioning lock cylinder hopefully saving yourself the cost of a new lock cylinder. Here's what I've read on Matt's Volvo Site from a user SuperHerman. I think what may be possible is replacing the lock cylinder on your existing ignition. Reusing existing ignition circuitry allows anti theft system to start the car. This is a tricky question. I will tell you what I found on a Range Rover lock tumbler I battled. Symptoms were the key would not turn - it would go in but would not turn. It was not frozen. I sprayed various solvents in there with no success. I removed the assembly, placed it on my bench and bought a special lock pick tool. I watched countless videos and did everything "right" to get it to open. It would not work - I could visually see the problem pins were stuck. Each pin had a spring and a machined chamber to travel - that is how locks work. Ultimately I ordered a generic Chinese BMW tumbler with the idea of re-keying it to my original key and replacing the tumbler. At the time BMW made the part used by Range Rover, but the item I bought had a different key set. I had to use a Dremel tool to cut the casting so I could remove the tumbler components and figure out the proper pins needed to work with the new tumbler. In the end I was successful. I rekeyed the BMW tumbler and carried over the parts to make it fit on my Range Rover. What I found as the failure point was that certain pins had frozen in place due to crud and natural oxidation - that is why the key nor the pick would work. Once open I could use a pick tool and solvent to free the pins. It took time and effort. The point is what ever you spray in there may cause the problem to get worse. The water that is frozen will cause issues of some type as the water is a liquid and will carry debris with it. Any "cleaner", even residue free, will displace crud and grease which ultimately will cause issues. The real fix is to get it to function and take it apart, clean everything correctly and grease as required (if at all). The approach I would take is to hit it with heat from an hair dryer/heat gun until it moves freely. Keep wiping off the key to remove moisture and try to dry the tumbler out as best as possible. Then keep an eye on it and if you notice it is getting worse go for a dismantle and rebuild. Usually it doesn't get as bad as my Range Rover did, but it had a very dusty life in the Dakotas for a number of years. Most likely you will not have any issues, but I am just explaining a worse case scenario so you understand what is going on.

I was thankful to turn mine by squirting a ton of lock graphite into the lock slot and after a lot of putting key in and out and turningwiggling the key over and over (not too much force) it finally turned after like 2 minutes of doing that. I wasnt sure if i was pulling the steering wheel at the time, i dont think i was at the moment, i was earlier though. (Its typically recommended that if your steering wheel is locked (anti theft feature), and your key wont turn, theyre related and you have to turn your steering wheel as much as you can and then turn the key to get the wheel and key to unlock) So id recommend Putting a lot of graphite in the lock, turning steering wheel as much as possible to lock position, either clockwise or counterclockwise, wiggle the key back and forth for 2 minutes at least and it might suddenly release the lock. Best is to use lock graphite in a tube (its a powder in a tube that you puff into the lock slot) but apparently if you dont have it you can try drawing on your key with sharp graphite pencil till it's coated with graphite, and put key in and out several times to get graphite in the lock cylinder. But i assume its not as good as being able to blow/puff graphite in with the tube. Maybe can get a lot of pencil graphite in there and blow in there with air to get it distributed better in the lock. Somebody also said make sure car is in park, hold the brake pedal and push shifter up a little to make sure its in park. Or heat the lock cylinder to loosen it up Edit: it just locked up again, wiggling by itself didn't do anything but after a lot of wiggling, I took out key, put in at a slight angle while turning, and putting in the key while trying to turn it (perhaps it was at a slight angle) got lock to release. But I'm gonna have to look into replacing this thing. $$$ 😕 Edit: got stuck one more time in the cold morning but was way quicker to get working that time by wiggling the key and inserting it. And never happened again in the day (maybe because it warmed up?)

This happened once before but I was able to get the key unstuck that time with the wheel being turned and wiggling key a few times. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Update on mine, it stuck during the winter but after that day it hasn't stuck again. That day I had to spray a lot of graphite in it and perhaps it had warmed up to, but not much if so. And then it was working fine. Some people say graphite is bad for ignition cylinder, I'm not sure. But now I make sure to dry off my ignition key before putting it in, I never really thought about it before nor have I ever used a key soaking wet but now I make sure it is dry as possible

I have my volvo 2001 s60 for more than 16 years and hat the same problem, But it happens more than 10 or more times a year but manage to turn the key always after puting the key in and out serveral times (some times moer than 20 x ) So i learn to live with that problem 😂😂😂

For me, it works if i just turn the steering wheel to the right, to open the wheellock, and then turn

Yes tapping with hammer and WD 40 got it turning. Also hammered on trans shift lock button and WD it. Car got flooded by hurricane Ian so it's junk anyway. Will but a battery in tomorrow, for more disappointment. Haha, oh well

The shifter cable are faulty, if you remove it should turn smoothly

I had to buy the part with my VIN number so that the part was specific for my car and would work with the keys I already had. A part that isn't car specific is cheaper, but I think the cost of the new keys would make it at least very nearly the same cost, if not more. So I did not have to program any keys, but I did have to buy the VIN-specific part. I think there are some 3rd-party places online that will do that as well, but for that much money I thought I didn't want to risk something going wrong, and it wasn't worth a hundred dollars to us to be without the car for even longer waiting for the part. Hope that helps.

Hi, as I said in the video, the only way I know how to get the cable with the orange end out was to get the key to position 1 one time. Banging gently on it might get the tumblers to move enough to allow you to turn the key once. I seriously had to try turning the key 50 times before I got it to move past position 0.

How did you disconnect the shifter cable if you couldn’t turn the key that’s my problem I can’t even get the key in the ignition

Unfortunately on these P2s, Volvo techs have told me any sort of repair are just buying yourself a small bit of time. I feel like they're overpriced for what it is, wish there was a proper repair solution, but what can you do. Just have to do it once and forget about it for a while

I'm not sure what the techs are saying would go wrong again, if you replace the whole part. Maybe you meant the banging on it method? If so, I'd agree, that's just buying you time. But if it happens the first time and you can't get home, at least it gets you home, and hopefully you have a few weeks to figure out getting it fixed without getting stranded or needing a tow truck.

You right. I had to get my Volvo S60 2006 ignition lock replaced and the auto locksmith said its a very common problem with the Volvos. He also said it would be a matter of time before it started to happen again.
