Parking (Emergency) Brake Assembly and Cable Removal - Dodge Caravan

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Shown here are informational directions for the removal of the parking brake (also called an emergency brake) assembly and the front parking brake cable on a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan. (For installation, do this in reverse.) In order to remove the assembly, the steering column cover and the reinforcement underneath it must be removed. The electrical junction block was also removed for access to the assembly. The left front kick panel is also removed to take up the carpet to get at the seal as the cable goes from inside to outside the floor. The assembly is held by 3 bolts, the middle of which can been seen and accessed only by pushing the parking brake pedal down to the floor. Otherwise it is sitting behind a metal piece attached to the pedal's lever arm.
To remove the cable, unhook the end of the cable underneath the car which is attached to the other 2 cables via the brake equalizer. To do this, pull the equalizer toward the back wheels and put a locking vice grip tightly on the front cable near a flap on the car so that the front cable cannot move. This will provide the slack on the back cables so that you can move the brake equalizer around. Orient the equalizer so that you can maneuver it and get the front cable out of the equalizer. Not shown in the video is that the cable is also connected to the bottom of the car with a "retainer" that has been put through a hole and is held in by clips. Use a 1/2# box end (open ended) wrench, or pliers, or whatever will work to push in the clips so that the retainer can fit through the hole and be pushed toward the front of the car. From there, go inside the car, under the carpet, and pull out the rubber seal in the hole in the floor. The cable can now be pulled through this hole. The other end of the cable is attached to the brake pedal assembly by it's end being fitted in a notch of the assembly's pulley. The notch might be bent to keep the cable from coming out, so you might have to bend a small piece of metal straight to get the end of the cable out of the assembly's notch.

Very good "how to" video UMatt. Well explained in voice and image and quickly done giving a good overview for people that are handy at working on their car and just need to get familiar with a process before tackling the job. Thanks.

Great video. I'm not sure what's wrong with my ebrake but with this help I might be able to figure it out. Pretty sure my caravan is the same

Thanks. That clockspring is supposed to take up slack in the cable when the pedal is released, with a ratchet. Sometimes it fails. Would very easy had they provided a screw adjustment under the vehicle to take up cable slack, like in older days. I wonder if a company could make a simple fix via a different 3-cable "equalizer" with built-in adjusters.

Thank you for this video, my question is- what was the original problem with the emergency brake cable, where did it actually break? My understanding there are three cables involved in this assembly, the rear right cable, the rear left cable, and the front cable.

Thanks. My e-brakes ratchet has gone bad, therefore the pedal doesn't stay down.

Anyone know how to get the opposite end of the new cable back onto the brake equalizer after the cable is installed into the brake assembly under the dash? I'm not getting enough slack to get the opposite end back into the equalizer bracket...

Hi William, it's been 3 years and I don't own the car anymore, but this is what I remember. I believe I put the front cable on the equalizer and pulled hard on the equalizer toward the back of the car, pulling the front cable toward the back of the car. I then clamped vice grips onto the cable right behind the hole in the metal it goes through, so the vice grips held the cable in place (so the spring in the brake assembly couldn't pull it forward again). I then took the equalizer off the front cable and attached the back cables. I then pulled the equalizer forward enough that it reached the front cable, which I eventually got through the notch in the equalizer. You could perhaps use more vice grips on the back cables too, in order to have both of your hands free to attach the front cable. I remember it took me some time, several trials, and getting "mad at it" enough to pull the equalizer hard enough to move the cables. If that doesn't work let me know why. If you can't pull the front cable backward maybe the brake assembly is somehow stuck?

There are probably a number of possibilities. The teeth that keep the pedal in place (and the parking brake on) could be worn. It is also possible that the circular spring is hitting the release cable's lever arm.

The reason I had to replace my cable was that when we got the van the parking brake pedal was hard to push and soon the cable broke, but I'm not sure why. It may be that something in the pedal assembly is hitting the release lever arm on the way down, and putting pressure on it that causes the release lever to let the pedal to pop back up. But it's really hard to know without seeing in there while it's happening. But hopefully this video shows you how you could remove everything to see the problem. The back brakes might also need general "cleaning." If they are jammed up from being old that could make the cable hard to move and the pedal hard to push, and the parking brake wouldn't hold well.

So on my car that metal plate is an airbag and I feel like it's more than dangerous to be trying to remove it.

I have taken my air bag off before. Make sure the battery is disconnected, before taking off the air bag system. Then make sure you hook everything back up again before connecting the battery. If you don't have the air bag connected when you hook up your battery, you will mess up the air bag system, causing it to be disabled. I had to take mine out to get to my blend door actuator.

Thanks for posting this! I just replaced the parking brake cable on my '07 Dodge Caravan. It's slightly different but similar to this. Here is a video of it if anyone wants to try it. Should be the same for all 2001-2007 models: kzread.info/dash/bejne/modhsdqsp9Sscto.htmlsi=ZNQ153dr7SyYR3XQ. Cheers!
