Some of my takeaways: 1. Two games a day max 2. Do your puzzles (15/15 if possible, 60 percent is good, set aside an hour). 3. Don't do TOO many puzzles. Don't do too much. 4. Stick to one opening 5. Sometimes you need a break. Don't always be playing. Everyone gets tilted and that's okay, just gotta take a break.

Cut back on empty games, stopped rushing puzzles, and tuned up my openings. Man, it is wild. I feel like I'm spotting way more tactics, feeling confident throughout entire games start to finish, and my puzzle rating is way higher than it has ever been by a huge margin. I'm a 40 hr/week manager but finding times for good, focused practice daily. I have been stuck around 1600-1800 for about 5 years and suddenly I'm absolutely crushing at my level. This is really outstanding advice. I have exactly the same behaviors as Ernest (described in the video) and having the advice for him reinforced (for myself) is really helpful. I know I need to stop playing compulsively: when I'm tired, when I'm not attentive, when I'm not focused -- and I also need to stop grinding through puzzles when I'm in those states too. Thanks for this!!! I'll try to discipline myself to stick to fewer puzzles with more focus!

Hey Levy, just found this video. In 2017-18, I got hard into chess and was rated around 1100. I finally came back this year and have been stuck around 750. I decided to pick one opening for white (London) and two for black (Sicilian Dragon and Budapest), focusing on eliminating blunders and playing solid moves, and have gone up from 750 to 850 in the last month. I finally have my passion for chess again and hope to keep climbing the ratings.

I had been stuck at about 1100 for 2 and a half months when this video came out. I followed Levy’s instructions, started doing more puzzles, learned some openings that take my opponents out of my comfort zone and really stuck with them, and started analyzing my games, and lo and behold in the past month I climbed about 150 ELO in rapid and I don’t feel quite as stuck. Levy, if by any chance you’re reading this, thanks for being such a great teacher, content creator, and entertainer. I started tournaments at age 20 and played off and on for 6-7 years. My peak rating was 1905. Decades later I took up chess to teach my kids and now I coach in a school.
