I like to view endgame and non-endgame pawns as different pieces. In the endgame they have individual power, since all of them could become a game ending piece, and in the rest of the game they're strong as a collective, acting as a single 8 point piece. In the endgame you protect the pawns, before that the pawns protect you

Chess player for 37 years here; I just like to watch your channel, regardless of topic. ... I think it might be important to clarify WHY a passed pawn is so strong, since some newer players will not already see the reason. The usual method of stopping a pawn is to trade another pawn for it. Because a pawn is worth less than even a weaker piece (knight/bishop), an opponent doesn't want to trade something other than one of their pawns for your passed pawn -- because were they to do that, you could just start trading evenly piece for piece and easily win. If you can protect the pawn and march it down the board, the opponent will struggle to keep it from promoting. You cannot always force the opponent to trade a piece for your passed pawn in order to stop you from promoting -- however, the passed pawn is like being armed with a weapon that you can at any time choose to use. Every time you want, you can work to move the pawn further. Your opponent must keep the threat in mind all game long, once you have that passed pawn. It is a lot like forcing a person to run with one foot tied to their elbow. And it really, really feels like it.

The value of pawns goes up as the game progresses. In the early stages, they are 1. expendable soldiers, 2. Excellent defenders precisely because of their perceived low value, and 3. devices which can be used to manipulate the opponent. As the game progresses they increasingly try to realize their dream.... "I may only be a pawn now, but I aspire to be a QUEEN."

Your recent content has been absolutely amazing, thanks Levy! The way you explain your thought process through your games (especially in The Best Chess Tournament of My Life) gave me insights that changed my fundamental understanding of the game. Maybe a cool instructional video idea would be seeing games from your opponent's POV. A lot of beginners lose because they mostly only see moves from their perspective and forgetting about the other side. Also, you mentioned linking an article in the description but I don't see an article?

How to use pawns "properly" in the various phases of a chess game. 1) Slowly open the packaging and pull a couple pawns out 2) Throw your pawns in a pot to simmer with horse meat and maybe read the bible while at it. 3) Once the horse meat has been tenderized enough, and or you have finished reading the holy scriptures, start pulling the pawns out of the pot for consumption. Careful not to make the rookie mistake of consuming pawns on their own. Always escort them with some sort of a side dish if you want to have a majestic experience. You are welcome
