Bro, you just skipped the food capital of the north and went straight to Hanoi. Even Hanoi people travel to Haiphong for the food. Btw, Haiphong is the second largest city in the northern VN, you only scratched the surface of the city

Hey Paddy, unbelievable your footage and your experience in Cat Ba. I am a world traveler and Cat Ba has been one of my favorite places. I was planning to go next week again, but after seeing your vdo, I will make sure I am not there in the weekend. When I was there just before covid 2.5 years ago , I had a very relaxing time. I found it a very laid back town and it was 10 times cheaper and same beautiful as halong bay. I made a two night luxurious cruise in Halong bay, which was nice but expensive. In cat Ba I took two days on a row the same trip on a luxurious boat incl. biking Kayaking etc for only 25 US $( INCL LUNCH AND DRINKS). It was the best excursion deal I ever had. In the evening I had the greatest and most friendly service and good food in one of the boulevard restaurants. I was totally 100% happy in Cat Ba. Its for sure that you choose a long holiday weekend and Yes then every nice city can become a night-mare. Try a fishing village like Bangsaray/Pattaya were I live in Thailand on a holiday weekend when bangkok people escape.. Same story, a beautiful tranquil village becomes like a hell-hole. Anyway just my two cents on Cat Ba. I enjoy your travel vlogs very much and follow you. However I feel a little sorry that you did not experience Cat Ba as I did. You have to understand that if there are school holidays or long weekend people escape the city for some happy times. best rgds Hans Jungle Moon Homestay Bangsaray Thailand. I hope you stay with us one time ( complimentary) as I like to meet you, I like you and I would love to give something back because you gave me hours of pleasure with your greatest travel flog. Thanks mate. I do try to keep it positive, but it's not possible (for me anyway) to cut out the times I get lonely or miserable. Even though I get negative feedback saying all I do is moan etc I still would prefer to just me, even if I am a miserable twat from time to time

I appreciate it as well because too many vloggers come across as fake with smiley happy faces all the time. However, I do think Paddy is getting tired and needs to stop and recharge. Maybe time to just relax for up to a week then come back for the southern ride. I was deeply disappointed in the Ninh Binh episode because that's one of the most beautiful places in Vietnam with lots to do and I think Paddy kind of glossed over it (check out Alright Anton's video on Ninh Binh, he showed way more even though he missed out on a few things due to the heat). I think Paddy also did the same to Sa Pa, which I kind of agree with him about the Disneyland-ness of the city, but I think had he stayed at someplace like Topas Ecolodge vs in the city, things might have been different...or stayed with the ethnic family and trek through the mountains.

Especially not when you just came back from a 300 $ pampering cruise in Halong bay, You didn't choose for a soft landing , and you are going to experience another Vietnam as you go more south, IMO its getting worse because Danang, Hoi Ann, Dalat Ho Chi Min and the lower mehkong delta are imo not that special. and you are not a miserable Twat but a spoiled brad after your experience on the 300$ cruise...just joking.. looking frwd to see your vietnam adventures, The next travel log you should make is about Myanmar, I have been there at least ten times, its kind of open for tourist again and its a top destination. Happy to inform you about this country when we meet ( maybe) in the Jungle. Oh my Budha so many great travel destination in the world, I have seen them all and hope for you , you can do also. On your qualities as a top producer ( and even all by yourself) I am sure you could find a company who would sponsor all your trips. Good luck and thanks for your great travel vlogs. Cheers. @@Anilove1 I think confrontation could turn out badly - you don't know what the dude is up to and maybe he's part of a larger group looking for a fight or a tourist to scam. After all, you're just a guest in a foreign country, so I think Paddy instinctively did everything right. I certainly wouldn't have given the guy my Insta or YT details either 😄😄

it's a reminder, care. It's not a search. Vietnamese people know little English, so the guy who can speak English will want to help foreigners better understand the driver's license. Sometimes the care is a bit rude but foreigners are very appreciative of the Vietnamese people

Cat Ba Island has it busy part Paddy, you missed the beautiful national park on the island. There’s a lot more to Catba than that busy resorts. You are so right about the vibe, just move on to greener fields! I was kinda thinking your sounded a bit tired in the last video. Break time, go see the girlfriend. Great video! the license guy concerned about vloggers driving without licenses then we get kids driving kids, small trucks driving into the opposite side of the road..lol love it

I think the local was trying to say that you need a motorbike license because most tourist believe a valid drivers license is accepted. You can drive a car with a regular license but you can’t ride a motorbike unless you have the proper license from your home country. You didn’t specify which one you had, but it’s a very common misconception tourist have. You also need an international drivers license stating you can drive a motorbike, it’s usually a paper.

my experience with cat ba was also bad, the hotel we stayed at recommended us a ha long bay day trip on a boat, run by his brother. As we arrived on an island we could explore they stole our money out of our bags. When we realised it, they just threw us from the boat and the hotelowner ignored us totally.

Yea I notice he tends to be difficult and judgmental sometimes. He finds problems with little simple things and judges the place and the people while obviously he's just too exhausted to enjoy anything. What also bugs me is that he tends to be unhappy with how packed the places are, call them "touristy" and make his judgments about other tourists who might have different ways of enjoying themselves than he does while most of the places he visits are actually tourist attractions. I've been binge-watching his videos but his judgements sometimes just make it less enjoyable to watch

I'm pretty convinced that the not vibing with Cat Ba had nothing to do with the island itself, but with being tired, hungry and being unfortunate having to deal with the vietnamese tourists. Cat Ba is a quiet, authentic version of Halong Bay. I hope you get back there someday. And don't focus too much on the town (like you did also in Sapa).

Yep, to me Paddy seemed super tired after episode 10 and I think he needs to just take time off to recharge before he makes the southern trek. Riding on a bike for a month cannot be easy on a body or mind. And I also agree about Sa Pa, but I thought he really glossed over Ninh Binh (Alright Anton did a really good video on Ninh Binh and he missed a few things due to the heat).

My Cat Ba experience was different I wasn't in the main town, I was on a hotel on a smaller island. Was amazing actually. But hey that's the beauty of travel, different sensations for different people at different parts of the year...it happens. Great vid Paddy mate 👌

Being watching most of your KZread from Thailand and now Vietnam...this clip you either really burn out or lost interest riding alone.... rushing back to your comfort zone Hanoi ... Maybe it's good for you to take a break from travelling for awhile .. take a break and hope to see you soon with a high spirit of riding again ..

Paddy had this “episode” in Thailand too. Many travel youtubers do have it. The problem about youtube in the mind of youtubers is YOU CANNOT STOP VLOGGING. If you do your algorithm will drop and won’t be picked up again.

I spoke to a pilot long ago that you don’t need a license to fly. That you only need one if you get caught. He got caught flying drugs into the USA.

Hai Phong is a cool place with many things to enjoy but only locals may know, not popular among foreigners. Hanoi people usually get on the train to Hai Phong and hold a food tour.

Thanks Paddy for keeping it real! I find a lot of travel KZreadrs always make out that a destination/place is amazing or that there are having the best time. Can’t wait for the next episode :)

I enjoyed my stay in Cat Ba November 2017. It was low season and I stayed in a very good hotel at a low price (200,000 dong). There were some good walks, good restaurants and a relatively inexpensive cruise in Hailong Bay.

I’m just love the way u incorporated drone view into ur log. It’s give me an appreciation to the entire scenery. Thanks mate. 👍🤪

Paddy, such a pity you missed the beautiful national park in the kids of the island. It’s great for hiking👍 you could have also visited Hospital Cave- an amazing relic from the war. There’s more to Catba than that noisy resort town

That was a great video Paddy thank you. I really appreciate how calmly you conduct yourself when things go awry, although I think perhaps you're turbulent on the inside. Particularly you handled the motorbike license 'police' very well. Agree that not every day and every place is a winner!

I felt the same way about Cat Ba, we had an afternoon and evening there and left first thing the next morning. There are much better places to spend your time in.

Considering how Vietnamese police and other authorities operate, often in plain clothes, I appreciate the way you dealt with that gentleman. You did a good job to de-escalate that. You just never know.

Thanks for keeping it real with us Paddy! Still an awesome video even though Cat Ba didn't work out, the local kids and success with the train was much better. I have read and seen other travelers say that Cat Ba is better, less commercialized that Halong Bay, but now I am wondering... even if it wasn't the weekend, it seems pretty touristy. Oh well. it's all part of the fun and you have such a good outlook on everything. Looking forward to seeing Gary in the next one!

You should hit Max McFarlin up for info on food since Gary's knowledge of Vietnamese doesn't seem to be extensive. I also think you should have done a food tour with the same guide that Flora and Note used in Hanoi. When you hit Hoi An, use the guide that Steph and Pete used (the best I've seen so far).

What the guy meant with the Driving Licence, is that you need a Vietnamese Driving licence to drive in Vietnam... International Driving Permits are not recognized and insurances don't cover anything in case you don't have a Vietnamese licence...

I thought you were an Aussie too Paddy ;) Cat Ba wasn't for me either. Once the weekenders hit the island it was just overwhelming, but the National Park was peaceful and beautiful. An interesting experience!

Looks like the visit to Cat Ba was bad timing. But you made the right move. This was a case where it was beneficial to be traveling solo, as it would have been complicated if you had traveling companions that didn't want to leave. Glad you enjoyed the rest of your trip through the North!

I honestly love travelling round countries by rail, it can be a bit limiting if you want to get to more remote places, but if it works for my trip I much prefer it.

Im really enjoying your videos! Planning a trip to Vietnam in Feb next year and learning lots. Loved the way you were so cool in dealing with that prat and his unwarranted licence comments! Drone shots are great btw.

We had the same issue in 2019. Went there in the weekend, bad choice. Every hotel was fully booked, found a hostel after a few hours of searching. We were able to do the boat tour we wanted (absolutely beautiful), thank god it was pretty quiet on the water. Next time we will avoid the weekend.

Just found this video looking for information about Cat Ba. It is a great vlog showing this side of travel. Sometimes at some places the feeling/vibe is just not there.

So sorry the end of that trip to Cat Ba ended like that for you...just to add to how you already felt. Hope you blasted some sweet tunes and drive that negativity out.

I saw you have learnt something : never ever travel on week-ends or during festival holidays and school vacations . Cat Ba Island has a lot more interesting things to do and gorgeous sceneries to see ( Cat Ba national park , Viet Hai village , trekking through the jungle , Cannon Fortress , Military Hospital inside the mountain , etc...) than only that noisy Main Cat Ba city . Yes , like you guessed , Sun Group company is building a mega city on Cat Ba bay , with beautiful resorts , hotels , huge shopping malls , golf courts , waterpark , casino , night clubs and more . Always do more researches to get up-to-dated information before you head to a new place . Also don`t expect to have good Indian food on a Vietnamese island .You should order Vietnamese seafood instead . For me I would never eat Vietnamese foods ( if there are ) in Mallorca ( Spain ) or Mykonos island (Greece ) . About driving-licence , many foreign backpackers are motorbiking in Vietnam without licence , which is obviously very dangerous for the local people and for themselves as well . And they seem to be happy and very proud of themselves for that . Ya ! wait until they get involved in an accident killing or injuring people or themselves . Believe me it would be a VERY BIG issue for them . It is actually the main reason the Vietnamese police does random controls on the road to stop potential offenders in order to reduce accidents . Don`t think that the Vietnamese cops are doing that to get bribe from foreign motorbikers . The young boy you saw on the scooter was learning how to ride on a quiet ground , not on the busy street .

I'm with ya regarding Cat Ba. Spent 3 nights there with a buddy, and I couldn't wait to move on.

When you go to the south, remember to go to Mui Ne beach, try Phu Quy island in Phan Thiet, it is really cool. Con Dao too. In Kien Giang province, try Nam du, Hon Son island

for sure he needs to go back, because he had it wrong !! Cat Ba is( at least two years ago when I visited it) one of the best destinations I have travelled to.

Episodes like this build character and integrity. Football sequence is great fun. Sad to see what was once a quaint island village giving way to construction for mass tourism and money. Like Puerto Vallarta in Mexico. "They paved paradise . . . put up a parking lot." (Joni Mitchel) And "licence man" . . . I've felt that . . . a bit of resentment harking back to harder times. I was in Cat Ba back in 2018 and my first impressions were also not good. The city itself is dirty... But at least we stayed at a very familiar and local hostel/area where no much foreigns tourists were and people were super nice and that is what I want to cherish. Also back then there was a company that offered activities around the bay and one was climbing rocks. That was really fun, even if you are not an expert. I think that the company closed down during covid tho... My point is that I totally get you and your thoughts ^^
