Never knew my old man, he's been in the pen most of my life. Followed his footsteps for years until I started having sons of my own. I watch my youngest imitate everything I do and it keeps me grounded. I always knew growing up that I wouldn't let the cycle curse my own kids. I'm immensely thankful for the fact that so far I've been able to be the man they need me to be. Every choice I make is to ensure that they see a man who works hard, has respect, and treats people fairly because that's what I want them to be.

Brother I feel ya. My dad left went I was 2 took the cars so my momma said we either live in the car and pay for gas tires and insurance or live in the house pay utility bills he called when I was 40 I heard a voice say Shawn I replied Dad. He was dying of cancer they told him in 1966 he only had 6 months to live. He died in 2005 while I was doing 15 years first time I remember I ever saw my mom and dad together was in visit. My life story would make Oprah cry but I just keep moving. Been home 8 years January had 7 heart attacks since my best friend of 30 years and roommate died last month from having a sore back I've been living in my truck since. But I have the key to the door and I'm free imagine not seeing the stars for years cause the lights are to bright and never go off. Freedom is second to breath. My story ain't one upping yours cause there's somebody with worse to tell . ✌ peace

Breaking the cycle is never too late. Just feels overwhelming most days. I've been tired of being just like my dad in some ways. My dad is a great man but his demons became my demons. I can't pass them onto my kids so I fight to be better everyday! Thank you Struggle for your music but more then that, thank you for showing us all it's never too late to change! None of us are too far gone. Just day by day, we strive to better ourselves and our families!

My son will be nine years old this September and I haven’t heard or seen him in 3 years this November. His mother’s other father of her daughter keeps my son away from me. I’ve never done anything to harm my son but be try to be a father to my son. I am homeless and since I’ve be out of prison since 2012 I had jobs left and right cause of my past and I don’t let that get me down I keep moving forward and pay my child support with whatever I have to give. It’s getting harder for me to get back on my feet and have a life with my son. I pray every morning and thank the lord for blessing me another day to provide for my son. I hope he’ll remember me and want to find me and we can be father and son. I love you son

Brother, you’re going through what many, many, many, dad’s are and have been going through now for it seems like forever now, but like a lot of them, and myself, have all gone through, you can make it. Both of my sons were taken from me by their mothers and the “system,” and both before they were 3. My first son in 84’ and my second son in 07’ and I wasn’t “allowed” to see either but a couple of “hours a week,” which isn’t enough for any parent to have any kind of relationship with their child under any circumstance. The only thing this accomplished was making both of my sons love me even MORE, and once they turned 18 they were able to see and be with me all they wished and it HURT their relationships with their mothers in the long run. Pay your stupid support and keep your nose out of trouble and stay strong in your faith and everything will fall your way. Let your anger and hatred go and embrace your own life and lean into bettering yourself and your relationship with God and Jesus Christ and watch your skies become blue again! NEVER EVER EVER EVER give up or think about quitting, EVER, and you will make it!

@Erica Harmon this is the story of The Great Waylon Jennings grandson. It is true and he has real time in federal prison as well. Struggle is as real as a performer can it. That's why a 60 year old rocker loves him so much.. He's a lot like the original Out Laws of Music... I feel this song in my bones, did the things my father did before me, but am a better man then he was in many respects.

My daddy didn’t want to be around because he was so fed up. He didn’t want to pass his shit to me. But what he didn’t know is it came to me regardless of him being around or not. We made peace before he died and that’s all I can ask for! I love you struggle ❤❤❤❤❤❤ Can’t wait to see you later on this year! 🎉

My kids definitely ain't gonna be riding like I did. They ain't even know about it and it's gonna stay that way. I'm glad I was able to switch it up and still keep food in they mouths.

I'm 48. Been listen to this song since it came on KZread 7 years ago. Parts of every verse mirror my life in a way that makes me choke every time. Life is hard boys. Take every hit right on the chin. When the time is right you can chose to give it back 10x or you can chose to forgive them. My dad was murder by a drug addict when I was 11. He died defending the woman he was with after my cheating mother broke his heart. We were from Baltimore. He wasn't a perfect man by any means but he was a good man. A hard man but a loving father. I made it past his 31 and I'm ashamed to say I stil haven't got him beat. Miss you still dad. I have my own family now. Feed em by any means.

My mom is having a hard time, and so am I. I lost my puppy a few weeks ago. And I lost my dog last year. I lost my aunt last year too. I found out that my grandpa had a disease last year on the same day I found out my aunt died. We just have to stay strong. Spend time with family and pets while you can. Some paths you have to walk to know what life can make you become. I used to hate my reflection as it resembles him but now I see recognition when I look into the mirror. This song hits deep.

My father abandoned me when I was 9, mother away, grew up with grandparents, hate is the only thing I know. Always learning how to control my emotions, trying to understand why, trying not to be like my dad, even tho my life has taken almost the same timeline as my father did, I have a daughter 10 years old. And I have no intentions of ever leaving her like my dad did.

I know my old man and he still out there I reckon trying to get it but when I actually new he was my dad I was sixteen years old and already on that wrong road. I was already grown and didn't need to know because he was on that wrong road as well. So I chose to keep my distance. I love and thank him cause if it wasn't for him and my mom I wouldn't be here. I'm worthy because of me and the good Lord. Thank you God

2 anyone in disagreement with their parents please know it could be worse. At least u have them 2 debate with. No parents raised me. Was on my own from birth. I was abandon, unwanted by any human, not even adopted. I've fought hard 2 survive/realize I've been God's child all along. He blessed me w/a lil family of my very own going towards 3 decades ago. My pride & joy now stands before me & hugs me tight and expresses 2 me I taught them that a parent is love. Who would've thought such a crappy story begining eventually is blooming into a beautiful garden?

Don’t waste your time with them. My dad died in front of me when I was 21, and I have a lot of regrets. Always remember to just get along, cuz you never know how long you have. You only get one shot.

I thank you for this song. Its one of my go to sings and I listen to it almost daily. The first time that I heard it I could only see my own story but through your words. This song is a godsend for me. The lyrics hit me hard, but the hook keeps it calm enough for people to just think of it as a good song.
