Welcome to our Stromea Formidable reaction!!! This is our latest video reaction from our new music reaction channel Beer’s & Bars. Here we listen, react, and breakdown bars while enjoying some of our favorite beers. Today as we dig deeper into our Euro Trip we have to say Belgium is on FIRE!!! This was interesting to see Stromea takes on the role of a drunken person who tries to hit on other females and cause uncomfortable situations in the public eye. We feel at this point there is nothing Stromea couldn't do!! We love the creativity from Stormae and we are always eager for more content!!! Keep it coming!!

Funny story about this clip: Stromae had a big hit with ‘alors on danse’. Then he went silent for years and everybody thought he was gonna be a one hit wonder. After some years there was suddenly a video on the internet saying “one hit wonder Stromae was seen drunk in Brussels”. It was shared massively on the internet. Few days later he drops this song with the videoclip. No one in this video knew that is was a videoclip. It’s the best marketing stunt I’ve ever seen from a celebrity. A bit of context about the song: it’s basically about a guy who gets dumped by his girlfriend cause he can’t have kids.

Funny story but not completely true imho, although 'alors on danse' was his biggest hit, he was by no means a one hit wonder. And certainly not if you live in Belgium, France and probably a few other places.

@@depassage5202 oh yes he was considered a 1 hit wonder in Belgium by many. 'Cheese' was a great album but 'Te quiero' as 2nd single didn't make nearly as much waves as 'Alors on danse' did. Even to this day Stromae doesn't get the flowers he deserves in Belgium (and particularly in the flemish part) Imagine him being nominated for a MIA (like a flemish grammy) for best dance and 'Regi' winning it!!!

Stromae had the idea for this video because he was filmed by a guy while eating a normal meal like everyone in his car. The guy was making fun of him in the video, stating that Stromae became a looser and people loved it. Stromae understood that people loved watching other's misaries or failers, although there was not much in that video. So he decided to give people what they wanted in the video of formidable and it worked.

On 21 May 2013, amateur videos surfaced on KZread showing Stromae apparently drunk and wandering at the Louise/Louiza tram and metro station in Brussels during the daybreak, which eventually went viral. It was revealed days later that the incident was part of the taping for a music video; this was confirmed during the TV programme Ce soir (ou jamais!) on France 2 in which Stromae discussed and also performed "Formidable", which is about the story of a drunk man just separated from his girlfriend.[1][2] The video, taken by cameras hidden around the station, appears to show a drunken, disheveled, and distraught Stromae stumbling around the station, shouting snatches of the song's lyrics at passersby, falling down, and on several occasions appearing on the verge of stepping into traffic. Onlookers are shown recording the incident with their cellphones, but only one person intervenes to prevent Stromae from sitting in the path of an oncoming tram. The music cuts off abruptly as three policemen, unaware that this is a taping, approach Stromae to assess his wellness and to inquire if he has been drinking. Stromae reassures them, and the video resumes. In the video's final scene, Stromae leaves, followed by his camera crew, and displays that his drunkenness was only an act by grinning into the camera, straightening his clothing, and clicking his heels. The video is subtitled "ceci n'est pas une leçon" ("this is not a lesson"). The video won the award for the "Music video of the year" category at the 2014 Victoires de la Musique.

*Formidable* in French does not have the same meaning as in English. In French it means wow, amazing, fantastic, groovy. In English it’s more like huge, impressive, intimidating. When he sings ‘Tu étais formidable, j’étais fort minable’, both terms sound almost identical, the only audible difference is the ‘d’ changed to ‘n’, and yet the meaning is utterly different. It translates ‘You were amazing, I was pathetic’. The poetry is powerful, and the play on words so clever.

Just saw him in LA last month and he was AMAZING! The best show I've honestly ever seen. He does not hold back on the theatrics on stage. All the songs are sung in French but he speaks in English in between. He is truly unlike any performer with his lyrics, message, visual art right now, which is why he's so loved all over the world. I just binged all of your Stromae reactions and it makes me so happy to see you guys love him as much as the rest of the us do! In his tour back in 2015, he recreated all the theatrics of his music videos. Famously he gets carried onto the stage in mannequin form for Papaoutai and holds the pose till the base drops. His tour right now is a bit more relaxed and I think he is enjoying it more. The 2015 tour was very stressful for him and my guess is that's why this tour is more relaxed. Check out the video he produced of his concert in Montreal in 2015. You can how committed of a preformer he is.

    1. You just missed Stromae’s concert at The Anthem, his first tour in eight years. He talks to the crowd in between sets in English. A lot of Europeans, Francophones and Francophiles in DC so it was probably a 50-50 or 60-40 split between English and French speakers but that doesn’t seem too different from his concerts elsewhere in the US. 2. Europe has a more relaxed attitude to celebrities. It’s more common for actors and musicians to live relatively normal lives without security details. 3. I would check out Stromae’s recent performance on Jimmy Kimmel. 4. There is a lot of word play in Stromae (btw he pronounces it Stro-may as in May 1st): formidable (great) vs fort minable (very lousy). The song he performs on Kimmel has a lot of puns on the names : Arlette/arrête (stop), Céline Bataire/célibataire (celibate/single). His song Quand c’est (“When is it” or “When will it be?”) is another example playing on the title (pronounced ca se) vs cancer (ca cer).

@@BeersBars As if French language was not difficult enough already, French people love to play with it 😂 In this case it’s about putting the last syllabus of a word at the beginning of it. Mae-stro becomes Stro-mae, fe-mme (woman) becomes me-fe, and so on. English words like mo-ney would become ney-mo, police liss-po… It works with first and last names as well. Bo-ris Risbo, Do-nald Naldo, etc. The French call it “verlan”, which is “l’en-vers” (literally reverse, the other side) turned into “vers-l’en” then “ver-lan” for a simpler spelling. Although verlan was invented a century ago or so, it was not widespread until the 1980’s when French kids adopted it as a way to speak between them without adults understanding what they were saying. From there it became more and more popular, and it is now a full part of French street language, not just for kids. Every day every French person uses at least one verlan word.

You should watch "La pluie" (which translates by "the rain") by OrelSan featuring Stromae. That song came out in 2018 (from OrelSan album "La fête est finie" released in 2017) during Stromae's break from music. Everyone was hoping that you would finally come back with a new songs, with a new album. But he still needed to take some time off for his mental health. He announced that he was stopping making music in the end of 2016 and came back in 2022 with his new album "Multitude". Stromae explained that listening to his friends' music (like OrelSan) he started to feel a bit jealous that he wasn't the one that had the idea to make some of the song that had released. He felt the need to go back to music and create new stuff. (To sum up 😉)

That last shot where he smiled was on a total different place in Brussels (I worked their so I know exactly where it was) , so its acted on different places, its not 1 real live acting performance. Still great. I think going like that with that behavior in the streets was the way to do it and not being recognized by people, or they think : Do I know him? Can't be him.. no no ... wasn't that famous at the time for sure, but even when Tom Cruise going in streets of new york like drunk guy, nobody will ever guess its tom cruise, people want to avoid connection with drunk people and assholes in the streets, they take distance so its harder to concider to want to know if they know him or look at him. Its more like : 'Again a drunk guy here screaming shit....

  • @robsteries

only he was staged. The idea for the song was after he met an old drunk guy who just wanted a bit of attention from just somebody after his faillure in life.
