It looks great. From my experience, if there are schoolies, a smaller lure works better than a big lure.

Yeah, I definitely needed a smaller rod and lures for that particular day. Didn't expect to run into so many small stripers.

I ran into that same issue last September with a lot of smaller fish and tons of peanut bunker and hard to imitate the real thing.Had a big rod also but did switch to a lighter rod and hoped I didn’t have to fight anything big in that current with it.

@@wish2fish37 In my case, I used about 3 inch lure. It is a tiny lure yet worked very well.

definitely want to take the rear hook off of that sebile. a big fish will break it off if he gets just that rear hook in the jaw in current. big one can also throat that rear hook.. if you don't like the action consider hanging a small weight on a split ring off of the back. usually the action is totally unaffected if you beef up a single hook for the belly. another plug to consider when fish are that close on topwater is a spook. you get a much more deliberate action and it can be worked at different speeds and rhythms and paused, whereas a pencil typically has a speed and cadence that is a sweetspot and shouldn't be as varied. you generally don't want to let them get a good look at a pencil, and that can make it hard to retrieve and get the right action on short casts. spooks are perfect in this situation for a deliberate follow and when the fish get a good look. get your rod tip low and let the rod bend and do the work. heavier rods like this one would work perfectly with a doc spook, but there are also a lot of guys making 1.5-2.5ish oz spooks with thru wires and made of wood which crush fish and are very popular north of boston and into maine. rm smith, mainiac, poombah. that said, i think you might have found bigger fish out in deeper water whilst the smaller fish worked smaller bait into shore. big pencil upcurrent, tear the water up as much as you can, and retrieve all the way to your feet. you can hit the smalls on the way in, but the bigger fish almost surely are in deeper water if they are in the canal at all and not offshore.

Thanks for the tips, man. I'll definitely take the rear trebles off and switch to singles.

@@fjlk32 that is interesting, and weird. Maybe you gotta try more different things or lures I dunno I have never been there. Interesting because Bama Beach Bum youtube channel recently made a vacation trip up to Cape Cod and caught stripers his first few trips out. Might have been this canal too I dunno. Anyways the setting looks similar to Bama’s video. Keep at it though good luck out there! Conquer the canal don’t let it and the stripers win against you for good!

I forget what the fixed sebile shad is called but it's way easier to cast, cast further, and hooks up much better and more often than the jointed swimmer IMO. I switched between the two for a few years and just got tired of the magic swimmer weaknesses
