Striped bass on the fly 2022 season, New York

Спорт

Hi Folks,
It's spring time and the 2022 season is off to a great start.
We've had some pretty good days fly fishing the surf and the back bays of long island, all wading action that you can easily do yourself.
This video is all about fly fishing for striped bass and how to do it and while we mainly used fly rods, the same techniques and locations will work if you are using conventional light tackle.
Hope you find this video useful for fishing for striped bass, as always, if you have questions let me know and I'll be glad to respond.
Please remember to handle striped bass with care and safely release them. The striped bass fishery is in danger of collapsing and we need to do our part to help them recover.
Best of luck and tight lines!
- Sergio

Good to see some small stripers this year, hopefully a good year class, that if we protect, will lead to some bigger fish down the road!

I had an amazing April and May here in CT. I had numerous days catching over 20 schoolies with light tackle hard plastic jerkbaits. They'd nail the lure on the pause. 2 slots were also caught. I had many "bass thumbs". Also landed a fat 37" from a boat after dark with a 4" slow sinking jerkbait. Light tackle schoolies are so much fun.

I know this is almost a year old. Do you use a beach buggy access permit or do you walk into all the sites in this video? I Grew up on LI and want to visit family and fish while there. Thanks.

Hello Andrew, I don't run my truck on the beach, all the spots on the video are accessible with a little walking, I park in from Jones to Montauk I park in public parking lots. Let me know next time you're in town and best of luck for the '23 season! 👍

Sergio I am just getting into New England saltwater on the fly, last fall was my first time up in Rhode Island and I loved it. Your videos were very helpful when tying and fishing for albies, thank you. I'm having trouble with the stripers though, I'll be working a project in LI for the next couple months and want to try and find some while there. Do you have any tips on what kind of water to look for? In RI i typically fish jetties and breakwaters but there doesn't seem to be many in LI, I'd also like to try and do some flats fishing, do I need a boat for that? Thank you so much!

Hi Alex, glad the videos helped you to get going. Long Island has lots of good spots for stripers on the fly. You want to look for beaches, south or north shore where bait fish gather, near inlets or back bays that hold fish. Because they migrate, you're better off stopping at on of the local tackle shops and talking to the folks there to see where the bite has been good. Let me know when you're here and maybe we'll meet up! Good luck!

@@SergioDiazFishing Awesome thank you for the tips! I have a few spots from podcasts to try first so we'll see what happens. Next shift I'm up there is 16-29th so hopefully I can find some early season fish! Thanks again!

Gary, I call the back bays anything between the barrier island (Fire Island) and the rest of long island. I like fishing the waters behind west and east of inlets from Jones to Shinnecock and they all have public access. If you haven't tried give them a shot!

What size and type of leader are you using here with the clouser? I started using an intermediate line and similar technique to the one you used in a video you put up a few weeks ago fishing a back bay in some current and now im catching fish consistently.

That's great! Glad you found the secret mojo for your water, in this video and most of the time I have a 9ft leader with probably 20lb and then tippet about 15lbs depending on what were fishing for. All fluorocarbon, best of luck!
