Strings Shorts Comparison: Pacific Strings, Cinematic Studio Strings, Jaeger

Музыка

I received multiple requests to compare the short articulations from Performance Samples' new symphonic strings library "Pacific - Ensemble Strings" to the shorts from other libraries, so here you go :)
Stick around until the end to hear all three libraries play a short musical phrase, using the full string ensemble!
This video features shorts from the following libraries:
- Pacific Ensemble Strings by Performance Samples
- Cinematic Studio Strings by Cinematic Studios(?)
- Jaeger (and therefore also Areia and Nucleus as they share the same samples) by Audio Imperia
Some thoughts on this comparison:
CSS does not only have Spiccato, Staccato and Marcato but also the Staccatissimo articulation, which I included in this video as well. Pacific on the other hand does not have a dedicated Staccato articulation, but the Marcatos are very flexible and can be used to fake Staccatos, which is exactly what I did, so don't be surprised if you see the text "Pacific Marcato" show up twice.
All examples are presented with all patches at their default settings (...with the exception of Jaeger, which is using the classic mix rather than the default modern one.), I did some rough volume matching by ear. There is no external reverb or other processing being used.

Don't have Jaeger, but I have CSS and Pacific. I think CSS sounds the most consistent in the solo parts but can sound a little tame in context, whereas Pacific can sound a little splashy in the solo parts but kicks ass in context, because it sounds so alive and human. Super interesting comparison. Thanks!

Please look at the track names to find out what library and articulation you are listening to at any given time. Sorry for the confusion! My thoughts: - Jaeger sounds really good to me here, but I'm not a fan of the bass sound. - CSS sounds amazing at lower dynamics, but I don't like the high velocities here. - Pacific, as expected, sounds a lot noisier than the other two. But overall the tone is very nice. For future comparisons I almost wonder if it would be better to put the libraries one after the other, rather than putting the instruments one after the other. I.e. all violins first, then all violas.

I agree with all of your assessments! Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep it in mind for future comparisons 👍

Nice comparison, Pacific Strings sounds really cool, the marcatos may not be a replacement for the staccatos, but damnit it sounds so good CSS sounds more intimate, which is why it's my favorite out of all of them, but i have to give credit where credit is due, Pacific Strings truly sounds amazing!, and as for Jaeger, it sounds nice, but the sound itself doesn't suit my style

Thanks for this! Jaeger hangs in here and sound really nice (except the basses).

2:20 - 2:52 You've written "CSS" here but it's playing the Pacific patch (audio meter activity)

You're right - and there seem to be issues after that point as well. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! I edited the pinned comment to reflect this.

badly written, badly programmed midi will sound bad no matter what library you're using. Making mockups with these advance libraries takes skill. The guys that are really good have been doing it for decades. Demo's like these tell you absolutely zero about the libraries. Everything depends on you. Not the sounds.

The midi in this demo is not designed to be musical, it's designed to show off the full dynamic range of the libraries. Yes, creating great mockups takes skill (who would have thought), but if I was approaching this comparison from the angle of "How can I make each library sound best" instead of "how will different libraries handle the same midi" it would be a useless comparison as it would be a video about my skill and creative desicions rather than the product. If you're looking for musical sounding mockups that sugar-coat the potential flaws of the libraries used, you clicked on the wrong video. If you can't find value in this kind of content, move on.
