    I loved your comments on how you measure while knitting by only referencing your row gauge on the swatch not the length as you're knitting. That was so helpful as I navigate my way to better fitting garments. Also, I don't think you should apologize for being so productive. Knitting is something you love and as long as you are not dealing with hand pain, I say just embrace it!! Love every episode!! Have a wonderful vacation if we don't see you before!

    The new Petite knit cardigan is going to look amazing. I just finished the Storm Sweater by Petite Knit using the same Fisherman's Wool. It's my current favorite sweater, wear it ALL the time. I did notice with blocking that it grew about 2". I was pretty shocked since I made sure not to stretch it length wise but only width wise so I could get the ribbing "square".

    Thanks for the heads up! I'll consider blocking before I do the ribbing or binding off to ensure I get the right length.

    Fantastic finished garments! When the Esther jacket was first teased it didn't call to me at all but now that I see it worn I really like it. For the dark yarn I would highly recommend a neck light. Makes a huge difference. I also often wear stronger reading glasses. Does not exactly make me look like a cool girl but who cares 😂

    So wonderful! I think I’m going to make a levitate wrap soon too out of being so inspired by you! I had a question about how to use row gauge instead of measuring your garments. How does the math change if your swatch row gauge doesn’t match the pattern’s gauge?

  • @stringthingsbymel

    @stringthingsbymel

    I love both my Levitate Wraps! The gauge math "formula" is always the same: your gauge per cm/inch × length = # of rows or sts to knit. Of course there are implications when knitting off gauge depending on the garment. There's a link to "cookie math" in the video description which has some examples when your gauge doesn't work. Hopefully that leads you in the right direction. Thanks for watching!

    Hey Melissa - I just re-watched your presentation on your Haley Genser. Ever since I saw this gorgeous make of yours, I've been smitten. I have gotten ahold of the Sadnes Garn book and actually want to make the one of the cover -- it has some of the cabling of the Haley, but less, and a quarter zip. Anyway, the reason I'm writing is because the patterns are all in Danish, as you know, and I'm wondering how you handled that? Thanks! P.S. As I've continued to watch your channel regularly I've concluded that you knit beautifully. It's as simple as that. you are choose nice patterns and excellent colors for yourself and yarn for your projects. But, truly, you just knit beautifully.

    Thank you 😊😊 My copy of the book has two languages, both English and either Danish or Norwegian. All of the English patterns are shown first, then the other language towards the back of the book.

    Also, The increse/decrese calculator rocks! What is the deal with the sandness garn booklets? How often are they released and what is the most cost effective way to access them? Thank you for mentioning blocked vs. unblocked gauge in context! I´d never considered it from that perspective. Maybe designing will help curb productivity? I think that whether you feel best in warm/neutral vs. cool tones will choose your grey vs white fisherman´s wool dilemma. Feel better soon and looking forward to the next! P.S. previous post was in reference to the yarn used with Haley.

    Another super video with lots of inspiration. Thank you. I might have to do another Levitate Wrap using Drops Baby Merino. Did you say 10 balls held double but 9 might do it. I'm also extra small. Also love the Paul sweater on you. It's a wonderful colour.

    Thanks! I weighed all the leftover baby merino and I have exactly 50 g = 1 ball remaining; so 9 balls should work! If it seems like you're cutting it close, you can shorten the ribbons a bit. Mine definitely grew from blocking and are a little long now.

    Hello Mel, First thank you for your content i am a beginner knitter and really appreciate your sharing. 😊 i have a question for you in regard to the Levitate wrap. I did the swatch and the first one with 6mm needles came out as wanted 22 rows about 4 inches X 4 inches but when i did the double knitting swatch with the 5 mm needles the pattern says it is supposed to be also 4 inches by 4 inches for 22 rows; my swatch is 4 inches long but only 2.5 inches for the 15 stitches. I do not understand how the same amount of stitches on smaller needles would give the same thing? Would you be able to help me understand? Thank you for taking the time

    Your Levitate Wrap is gorgeous. Do you pin your swatches? Some in the biz say not to while some do.

  • @stringthingsbymel

    Thanks! If the stitches need some help opening up, such as cables, or straightening out ribbing, then I do use pins on my swatches. I try to treat the swatch the same as I would treat the finished garment. Anything that is stockinette or not very textured, I lay flat to dry without pins.

    Being a newer garment knitter I want to know how you calculated yardage needed for Esther jacket switching to fisherman's wool?

  • @stringthingsbymel

    @stringthingsbymel

    4 ай бұрын

    The suggested yarn is 3 strands held together. I looked at the required amount of one of those strands to determine the total amount of yarn required. Ie) 400 g of Jensen yarn for size XXS. Jensen yarn comes in 50 g skeins of 125 m each. 8 skeins × 125 m = 1,000 m required. Fisherman’s wool comes in skeins of 425 m each, 1000 m ÷ 425 m = 2.4 (always round up), therefore I'll need 3 skeins of Fisherman's wool. When making a yarn substitution, you also have to consider yarn density as well, which is amount of yarn per unit of weight, especially important since what I've done is substituted a single yarn for 3 strands held together. I also swatched to check my gauge and ensure I had a fabric that would be suitable.
